Causes of Death in Nonmalignant Meningioma.

OBJECTIVES: Nonmalignant meningioma (NM) is the most common brain tumor in the United States (U.S.), accounting for 54% of nonmalignant brain tumors. This study aims to investigate the causes of death in NM patients and their possible associations with demographic factors. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we analyzed 116,430 NM patients diagnosed between the years 2004 and 2018. RESULTS: A total of 31,640 deaths were observed. Non-tumor diseases accounted for 63.9% of all deaths. Out of these non-tumor deaths, we found that the most common cause

How well does neonatal neuroimaging correlate with neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy?

BACKGROUND: In newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), the correlation between neonatal neuroimaging and the degree of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) is unclear. METHODS: Infants with HIE enrolled in a randomized controlled trial underwent neonatal MRI/MR spectroscopy (MRS) using a harmonized protocol at 4-6 days of age. The severity of brain injury was measured with a validated scoring system. Using proportional odds regression, we calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for the associations between MRI/MRS measures of injury and primary ordinal outcome (i.e., normal, mild ND

Role and relation of cell death in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), caused by damage to the brain's nerve cells, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that insidiously erodes cognitive function, and primarily affecting elderly adults. AD is associated with a considerable economic burden arising from multiple expenditure categories. The programed cell death, in normal cells, plays importance roles in biological processes, ensuring homeostasis and controlling development in multicellular organisms. However, AD is characterized by a high degree of pathological-related neuronal death, which is observable in various regions of the bra

Neuroprotective effects of urolithin a in a mouse model of intracerebral hemorrhage.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for 10-15 % of all stroke cases and is associated with high mortality and morbidity. Brain injury caused by ICH includes primary and secondary brain injury. Neuroinflammation and apoptosis play important roles in the pathological process of secondary brain injury after ICH. Urolithin A (UroA) is a metabolite derived from ellagic acid and has been confirmed to be anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of UroA on neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis in a mouse model of ICH induced by col

Brain pathology caused in the neonatal macaque by short and prolonged exposures to anticonvulsant drugs.

Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are potent GABAA receptor agonists and strong anticonvulsants. In the developing brain they can cause neuronal and oligodendroglia apoptosis, impair synaptogenesis, inhibit neurogenesis and trigger long-term neurocognitive sequelae. In humans, the vulnerable period is projected to extend from the third trimester of pregnancy to the third year of life. Infants with seizures and epilepsies may receive barbiturates, benzodiazepines and their combinations for days, months or years. How exposure duration affects neuropathological sequelae is unknown. Here we investi

Toxoplasma gondii: blood and tissue kinetics during acute and chronic infections in mice.

Acute lethal infections were obtained in mice by intraperitoneal (IP) injection of 10(2) or 10(4) tachyzoites of the virulent RH and C56 strains. Chronic infections were obtained by IP injection or peroral (PO) gavage of 20 cysts of the avirulent C strain. Mice were sacrificed at varying intervals after infection and parasite burdens were quantitated in blood, brain, and lungs using a tissue culture method. Acutely infected mice died within 6 to 10 days postinfection as a function of the strain and inoculum size. With either strain, tachyzoites were first detected in lungs on either Days 2 or

Concentration of microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT) in urine and saliva as a potential biomarker of traumatic brain injury in relationship with blood-brain barrier disruption in postmortem examination.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) constitutes a frequent finding in medico-legal practice, including forensic autopsy and neuropathological examination. Despite clinico-scientific advances there is a need for identification of novel biomarkers considered for TBI diagnostics in ante- and postmortem cases. The role of MAPT protein as a biomarker in case of TBI was investigated in previous studies by examination of blood and cerebrospinal fluid obtained during forensic autopsies whereas less is known concerning its liberation and occurrence in other biofluids. The aim of this study was to elucidate an

GSDMD gene knockout alleviates hyperoxia-induced hippocampal brain injury in neonatal mice.

Background: Neonatal hyperoxia exposure is associated with brain injury and poor neurodevelopment outcomes in preterm infants. Our previous studies in neonatal rodent models have shown that hyperoxia stimulates the brain's inflammasome pathway, leading to the activation of gasdermin D (GSDMD), a key executor of pyroptotic inflammatory cell death. Moreover, we found inhibition of GSDMD activation attenuates hyperoxia-induced brain injury in neonatal mice. We hypothesized that GSDMD plays a pathogenic role in hyperoxia-induced neonatal brain injury and that GSDMD gene knockout (KO) will alleviat

Megalencephaly in sudden infant death syndrome.

The fresh brain weights of 79 infants with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) were tabulated and compared with expected "normal" brain weights. The series included 47 males and 32 females. Their ages ranged from 8 days to 16 months with a median of 2.5 months. The weights of all these brains were above the 50th percentile for age, and 64 of 79 brains (81%) were above the 95th percentile, including 15 (19%) at or above the 99.9th percentile. The ratio of the brain stem plus cerebellum weight to the whole brain weight of 93 formalin-fixed brains from victims of SIDS showed that the cerebrum was

Update on nuclear medicine in end-of-life care of infants and children: radionuclide perfusion studies in the determination of death by neurological criteria (DNC).

"Death by neurologic criteria" (DNC), a condition previously described as "brain death", accounts for approximately 21% of deaths in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). DNC is primarily a clinical assessment, defined by the irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain including the brainstem. When physical examination and apnea testing, the standard components of DNC assessment, cannot be completed in full, ancillary investigations are required to complement and complete the process. Amongst accepted ancillary tests, radionuclide perfusion studies exhibit some of the highe…

Neurological determination of death in isolated brainstem lesions: A case report to highlight the issues involved.

The neurological determination of death in patients with isolated brainstem lesions or by disruption of the posterior cerebral circulation is uncommon and many intensivists may never see such a case in their career. It is also the only major difference between the "whole brain" and "brain stem" formulations for the neurological determination of death. We present a case of a patient with infarction of the structures supplied by the posterior cerebral circulation in whom death was diagnosed using neurological criteria, to illustrate the issues involved. We also suggest that international consens

Alcohol and the Developing Brain: Why Neurons Die and How Survivors Change.

The consequences of alcohol drinking during pregnancy are dramatic and usually referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). This condition is one of the main causes of intellectual disability in Western countries. The immature fetal brain exposed to ethanol undergoes massive neuron death. However, the same mechanisms leading to cell death can also be responsible for changes of developmental plasticity. As a consequence of such a maladaptive plasticity, the functional damage to central nervous system structures is amplified and leads to permanent sequelae. Here we review the literatu

Induction of cyclooxygenase-2 in the rat brain after a mild episode of focal ischemia without tissue inflammation or neural cell damage.

Cyclooxygenase-2, a key enzyme in prostanoid synthesis, is induced by inflammatory stimuli and it is associated with cell death after cerebral ischemia. Here we evaluated whether cyclooxygenase-2 was induced after a short (10-min) episode of focal ischemia, mild enough not to cause inflammation or cell death. One-hour ischemia leading to brain infarct was studied for comparative purposes. Induction of cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA and protein was detected after both 10-min and 1-h ischemia. However, signs of edema were only apparent after 1-h, but not 10-min ischemia, and only rats subjected to 1-h is

Sudden Death Due to a Cerebellopontine Angle Epidermoid Cyst: Case Report.

Epidermoid cyst of the brain is a rare benign embryonal tumor. It has an excellent prognosis because of its slow-growing nature. Clinically, symptoms are variable and depend on the location of the cyst. Sudden death may occur as a result of lethal complications because of the tumor growth, but it is still rare. In this article, we present a rare case of sudden unexpected death of a 58-year-old man, with no neurologic history, due to an epidermoid cyst of the brain diagnosed at autopsy.

Attitudes of the American public toward organ donation after uncontrolled (sudden) cardiac death.

Concerns about public support for organ donation after cardiac death have hindered expansion of this practice, particularly rapid organ recovery in the context of uncontrolled (sudden) cardiac death (uDCD). A nationally representative Internet-based panel was provided scenarios describing donation in the context of brain death, controlled cardiac death and uncontrolled cardiac death. Participants were randomized to receive questions about trust in the medical system before or after the rapid organ recovery scenario. Among 1631 panelists, 1049 (64%) completed the survey. Participants expressed …

'Death rattle' after withdrawal of mechanical ventilation: practical and ethical considerations.

The noise produced by oscillatory movements of secretions in oropharynx, hypopharynx and trachea during inspiration and expiration in unconscious terminal patients is often described as 'the death rattle'. The reported incidence of death rattle in terminally ill patients varied between six and 92%. It is most commonly reported in patients dying from pulmonary malignancies, primary brain tumours or brain metastases, and predicts death within 48 hours in 75% of the patients. Clinical studies demonstrate that hyoscine hydrobromide is effective at improving symptoms. After withdrawal of artificial

Humoral and cytokine responses in giant groupers after vaccination and challenge with betanodavirus.

Giant groupers were immunized with two dosages (Vhigh and Vlow) of inactivated nervous necrosis virus (NNV) and subsequently challenged with NNV at 4 weeks post vaccination (wpv). Several indicators were used to analyze the protective effects of the NNV vaccine. The neutralizing antibody titer of fish serum mostly corresponded to the survival rate of immunized fish in the NNV challenge test. Extravascular IgM+ cells were detected in the brains of both NNV-infected and noninfected groupers. After NNV infection, CD8α and IgM gene expression increased in the brains, indicating CD8α+ and IgM+ lymp

Sudden unexpected death in early Parkinson's disease: neurogenic or cardiac death?

We present two cases of sudden unexpected death (SUD) in elderly individuals in whom autopsy unexpectedly showed Lewy pathology, a hallmark of Parkinson's disease. Both individuals were 68-year-old men who were found dead in their homes without lethal trauma or poisoning. Inquests into their deaths suggested that nonmotor cardiovascular signs of Parkinson's disease might have appeared just before their deaths, although few typical motor signs were present. Autopsy showed Lewy pathology in the heart and peripheral autonomic nervous system in addition to lesser involvement of the brainstem that

Intraischemic mild hypothermia prevents neuronal cell death and tissue loss after neonatal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia.

The effectiveness of hypothermia in preventing ischemic brain damage depends on when it is started. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of temperature reduction during a hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insult on brain injury and signalling pathways of neuronal cell death and survival. Seven-day-old mice were subjected to left common carotid artery ligation and hypoxia (10% oxygen) at different temperatures (37, 36 or 34 degrees C) for 50 min. Brain injury at 7 days post-HI was significantly reduced from 67.4% at 37 degrees C to 31.6% at 36 degrees C and 10% at 34 degrees C, with no
