The speech-evoked auditory brain stem response (speech ABR) is widely considered to provide an index of the quality of neural temporal encoding in the central auditory pathway. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the extent to which the speech ABR is shaped by spectral processing in the cochlea. High-pass noise masking was used to record speech ABRs from delimited octave-wide frequency bands between 0.5 and 8 kHz in normal-hearing young adults. The latency of the frequency-delimited responses decreased from the lowest to the highest frequency band by up to 3.6 ms. The observed frequen…

Cellular fate of human neural stem cells (hNSCs) transplanted in the brain of nonhuman primates (NHPs) with no immunosuppression was determined at 22 and 24 months posttransplantation (PTx) regarding survival, differentiation, and tumorigenesis. Survival of hNSCs labeled with magnetic nanoparticles was successfully detected around injection sites in the brain at 22 months PTx by MRI. Histological examination of brain sections with H&E and Prussian blue staining at 24 months revealed that most of the grafted hNSCs were found located along the injection tract. Grafted hNSCs were found to differe

The increase in clinical trials assessing the efficacy of cell therapy for structural and functional regeneration of the nervous system in diseases related to the aging brain is well known. However, the results are inconclusive as to the best cell type to be used or the best methodology for the homing of these stem cells. This systematic review analyzed published data on SPION (superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle)-labeled stem cells as a therapy for brain diseases, such as ischemic stroke, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and dementia. This review highlights the therap

We described a patient who had left trigeminal neuralgia by vertebro-basilar dolichoectasia, who underwent microvascular decompression separ … rtebral arteries, basilar, and of both internal carotid. To our knowledge this is the first case of brain stem compression syndrome preceded by NT in patients with vertebro-basilar dolichoectasia and one of the few cases with coexistence of vertebro-basilar and bilateral carotid dolichoectasia.

Neural stem cells comprise a small population of subependymal cells in the adult brain that divide asymmetrically under baseline conditions to maintain the stem cell pool and divide symmetrically in response to injury to increase their numbers. Using in vivo and in vitro models, we demonstrate that Wnt signaling plays a role in regulating the symmetric divisions of adult neural stem cells with no change in the proliferation kinetics of the progenitor population. Using BAT-gal transgenic reporter mice to identify cells with active Wnt signaling, we demonstrate that Wnt signaling is absent in st

BACKGROUND: Transcranial sonography (TCS) has become a new diagnostic tool in the evaluation of extrapyramidal disorders. Studies of TCS rep … ve state could be identified in patients with Huntington disease. An alteration of the serotonergic brain stem raphe might be involved in the pathogenesis of depression in these patients.

Myxedema coma is the extreme form of untreated hypothyroidism. In reality, few patients present comatose with severe myxedema. We describe a patient with myxedema coma which was initially misdiagnosed as a brain stem infarct. She presented to the hospital with alteration of the mental status, generalized edema, hypothermia, hypoventilation, and hypotension. Initially her brain stem reflexes were absent. After respiratory and circulatory support, her neurologic status was not improved soon. The diagnosis of myxedema coma was often missed or delayed due to various clinical findings and concomita…

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes a patient who had a perforating eyelid injury that extended to the brain stem.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Japanese woman complained of decreased vision in her right eye, with severe ocular pain and headaches, after the metal tip of an umbrella struck her upper right eyelid accidentally. Her vision in the right eye decreased to light perception with commotio retinae, intraretinal hemorrhage, and severe lid swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated edema of the head of the caudate nucleus and putamen, and the edema extended to the hyp…

Despite the recent progress of MR imaging, visualization of the cranial nerves within the brain stem has not been accomplished. Periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (PROPELLER) multishot diffusion-weighted imaging, an effective method for compensating for motion and distortion, offers high-quality diffusion-weighted images. We succeeded in depicting the cranial nerves within the brain stem in some subjects by using this method with motion-probing gradient applied in the superior-inferior direction.

Mammalian central pattern generators (CPGs) producing rhythmic movements exhibit extremely robust and flexible behavior. Network architectures that enable these features are not well understood. Here we studied organization of the brain stem respiratory CPG. By sequential rostral to caudal transections through the pontine-medullary respiratory network within an in situ perfused rat brain stem-spinal cord preparation, we showed that network dynamics reorganized and new rhythmogenic mechanisms emerged. The normal three-phase respiratory rhythm transformed to a two-phase and then to a one-phase r…

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is often a fatal event. In a patient who survives the initial ictus, the resulting hematoma within brain parenchyma can trigger a series of events that lead to secondary insults and severe neurological deficits. Great efforts have been focused on searching for new approaches to help patients recover neurological function after ICH. Previous studies indicate that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) grafted into the ischemic rat brain can improve neurological function. However, there is no report regarding whether MSCs can be used in the same way to improve t

The quality of life in long-term survivors of paediatric brain stem tumors, treated with radiotherapy is evaluated. They suffer predominantly from pre-treatment neurological impairments, which seriously influence their quality of life. The most often observed treatment sequelae are pituitary insufficiency and hearing loss.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly sensitive in detecting acute supratentorial cerebral ischemia and Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) lesion size has been shown to correlate strongly with the neurologic deficit in middle cerebral artery territory stroke. However, data concerning infratentorial strokes are rare. We examined the size and evolution of acute brain stem ischemic lesions and their relationship to neurological outcome.
METHODS: brain stem infarctions of 11 patients were analyzed. We performed DWI in all patients and in 7/11 patients…

A persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) represents an embryonic vascular anastomosis connecting the carotid and basilar arterial systems. Little is known about its protective role in cases of basilar artery occlusion. We followed up a 63-year-old man who had suffered a brain stem infarction due to basilar artery stenosis and was found to have a PTA. Although a second brain stem infarction due to basilar artery occlusion developed, the circulation to the brain stem was well maintained via collateral flow from the PTA, and the patient demonstrated good recovery. A PTA may function as an anastomosis…

Substance P (SP) is a key neurotransmitter involved in the brain stem integration of carotid body chemoreceptor reflexes. In this study, the characteristics and location of SP receptors in the rat brain stem and their regulation by hypoxia were investigated using homogenate radioligand binding and quantitative autoradiography. Specific binding of [125I] Bolton-Hunter SP (BHSP) to brain stem homogenates was saturable (approximately 0.3 nM) and to a single class of high-affinity sites (K(d), 0.16 nM; maximum density of binding sites, 0.43 fmol/mg wet weight tissue). The order of potency of agoni…

The monitoring of auditory function by recording brain stem auditory evoked potentials in patients undergoing removal of acoustic tumors is hampered by the small amplitude of the brain stem auditory evoked potentials. Because several thousands of responses must be added, it takes several minutes to obtain an interpretable record. Recordings done directly from the exposed eighth nerve have much higher amplitudes, and, therefore, interpretable responses can be obtained after only a few responses have been added. However, it is difficult to place the recording electrode in an optimal position and…

Auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) to air- and bone-conducted clicks were used to assess the auditory status of 170 at-risk neonates. During the perinatal period, 20.6% (35/170 cases) of the at-risk infants failed ABRs to air-conducted clicks at 30 dB nHL in at least one ear. Ear-specific results indicated an initial failure rate of 15.0% (51/340 ears). Approximately two-thirds (32/51 ears) of these initial failures showed purely conductive deficits, whereas the remaining one-third (19/51 ears) involved suspected sensorineural components. Follow-up audiological evaluations were performed for…

Motor evoked potentials (MEP) were examined in 50 patients with space-occupying lesions of the brain stem and spinal cord. MEP findings were correlated with the motor status as established by clinical examination. The results clearly show the high sensitivity of MEP for detection of motor deficits: 17 recordings (77%) from the thenar muscle and 42 (84%) from the anterior tibial muscle correlated correctly with the clinical motor status. False-positive results were found in 5 (23%) thenar recordings and 8 (16%) and anterior tibial recordings. False-negative correlation was not observed. The hig…
