A novel bacteriophage pAEh1 for controlling Aeromonas hydrophila infection in aquaculture.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a significant pathogen in aquaculture, causing elevated mortality in cultured species. Bacteriophages, known for their specificity, have emerged as promising antimicrobial agents. In this study, the biological characteristics of A. hydrophila were examined, revealing hemolytic activity and multi-drug resistance. A bacteriophage, pAEh1, was isolated from aquaculture water using A. hydrophila as the host. Biological characterization identified it as a member of the Siphoviridae family. Functional annotation of its proteins classified them into categories including transcr

Novel Poly-Arginine Peptide R18D Reduces α-Synuclein Aggregation and Uptake of α-Synuclein Seeds in Cortical Neurons.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The role of α-synuclein (α-syn) pathology in Parkinson's disease (PD) is well established; however, effective therapies remain elusive. Two mechanisms central to PD neurodegeneration are the intracellular aggregation of misfolded α-syn and the uptake of α-syn aggregates into neurons. Cationic arginine-rich peptides (CARPs) are an emerging class of molecule with multiple neuroprotective mechanisms of action, including protein stabilisation. This study characterised both intracellular α-syn aggregation and α-syn uptake in cortical neurons in vitro. Thereafter, this study e…

Transcriptomic analysis of hydrogen peroxide-induced liver dysfunction in Cyprinus carpio: Insights into protein synthesis and metabolism.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a prevalent reactive oxygen species (ROS) found in natural aquatic environments, has garnered significant attention for its potential toxicity in fish. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this toxicity are not yet comprehensively understood. This study aimed to assess H2O2-induced liver dysfunction in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms via biochemical and transcriptomic analyses. Common carp were divided into normal control (NC) and H2O2-treated groups (1 mM H2O2), the latter of which was exposed to H2O2 for 1 h pe

Separating monosomy-21 from the "arthrogryposis basket".

An infant with monosomy-21 lived for 20 minutes. The clinical and radiologic findings suggested arthrogryposis, Infants with monosomy-21 have severe intrauterine growth retardation, failure to thrive, arthrogryposis-like findings with restriction of joint mobility, often with joint dislocations, and flexion deformities and malposition of the fingers and toes. Features which help to distinguish it from arthrogryposis include a rather specific craniofacial configuration with a broad base of the nose, an antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures, a down-turning mouth shaped like that of a car

Mechanism of MWCNTs induced hepatotoxicity in Cyprinus carpio: New perspective from a Lipidomic study.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), an extensively applied nanomaterial, can cause damage to the liver in fish. However, the underlying lipotoxic modes of CNTs exposure have not been studied. In the present study, juvenile Cyprinus carpio was exposed via water to various doses of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) (0, 0.25, and 2.5 mg L-1) for a consecutive 28-day period. Our results showed elevated hepatosomatic index (HSI) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities in plasma in all exposure groups, indicating that MWCNTs exposure induced liver dysfunction. Significantly increased low-density lipoprotein (

IGFBP1a is a nutrient deficient response factor that can inhibit fish reproduction through the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis†.

Reproduction is a high energy consuming process, so long-term malnutrition can significantly inhibit gonadal development. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism by which fasting inhibits reproduction. Our present study found that fasting could dramatically induce insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1 (IGFBP1) expression in the liver, hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries of grass carp. In addition, IGFBP1a in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis could inhibit the development of gonads. These results indicated that fasting may participate in the regulation of fish gonadal

Bio-functionalized zinc oxide nanoparticles: Potential toxicity impact on freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio.

There is a growing concern nowadays over the exposure of nanomaterials and their effects in aquatic life. In spite of reporting the changes in physiology, reproduction and behaviour in fish by different nanoparticles, the molecular events underlying in the aquatic bodies due to the toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are mainly unexplored. Therefore, the present study carried out an ex vivo exposure of ZnO NPs at various concentrations (0.382, 0.573 and 1.146 mg L-1) in freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio to investigate the potential adverse effects. The results revealed that ZnO NPs ex
