We describe a family line with an autosomal recessive disease of muscular dystrophy of the diaphragmatic muscles in Holstein-Friesian cattle. An outbreak of cysticercosis in a south-central Idaho custom feedlot reached a peak prevalence of 11% in January 1993 and extended from October 1992 through March 1993. Of 5,164 cattle slaughtered from this feedlot during the outbreak, 457 (9%) were cysticercosis infected. Total discounts on the infected cattle at slaughter cost the feedlot $154,400. An experiment was conducted in The Gambia to compare trypanosomosis incidence between zebu and N'Dama cattle. It was considered important to compare the 2 breeds under identical management conditions and the animals were maintained together at 3 locations, traditionally managed and under a range of tsetse challenges. Attenuated Babesia bigemina were multiplied in vivo and in vitro to vaccinate two groups (Groups 2 and 3) of Holstein Friesian heifers. Another group (Group 1) of heifers was vaccinated twice with purified soluble antigens obtained from the supernatant of in vitro culture combined with saponin. All these heifers plus controls (Group 4) were inoculated with heterologous pathogenic B. bigemina 5 months later. Milk fever is usually treated by i.v. administration of 8 to 10 g of Ca. Oral Ca salts have been suggested as an alternate treatment for milk fever. In our studies, plasma Ca concentration changes effected by various oral Ca preparations were compared. Solutions were administered by oral drenching of cows, and blood was obtained hourly. Calcium chloride increased plasma Ca better than Ca propionate, which increased plasma Ca better than Ca carbonate. The incidence of trypanosome infections, measured by a Berenil Index in experimental herds of 10 Zebu and 10 N'Dama cattle, was compared with tsetse challenge and with the prevalence of parasitaemia in local N'Dama at three villages in Gambia. The influence of purulent claw-diseases on the development of uterus infections, its involution and ovary dysfunctions (acyclia, cysts) was examined. Sixty fatal cases of traumatic reticulitis in cattle were reviewed. Fifty-nine cases were caused by fragments of wire. A nail perforated the reticulum of 1 animal. Common clinical signs included decreased milk production, anorexia, fever, and weight loss. Abnormal or muffled heart sounds associated with pericarditis and epicarditis was the most common sequela, occurring in 40 cases. Fibrous adhesions found at necropsy in all cases suggest that initial clinical signs are difficult to recognize and in most cases it takes weeks to months for abnormalities to be observed.

Eight Simmental cattle were presented to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine over the past decade with historic or current prolonged episodes of bleeding. Spontaneous epistaxis, superficial hematomas, and prolonged bleeding following injury or minor surgery (such as tattooing) were frequent observations. Analysis of whole blood samples from 174 cattle and, 174 sheep from 3 geographical regions of New Zealand over a 10 month period showed a mean (range) thiamine level of 122 nmol/l (71-237 nmol/l) for cattle and 118 nmol/l (67-227 nmol/l) for sheep. Regional and seasonal differences were noted with levels tending to rise over the summer period. A reference range of 75-185 nmol/l is proposed for both cattle and sheep to cover these variations. Levels below 50 nmol/l are considered indicative of deficiency.
