The time-course of the formation of 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (CTF) and 2-chloro-1-1-difluoroethylene (CDF), two recently identified volatile reductive metabolites of halothane, has been studied in four patients receiving 1% halothane with 99% oxygen. The concentrations of CTF and CDF in end-expired breath increased with time and reached a plateau after approximately 60 min from commencing administration. We describe an improved method for chemical deglycosylation of gastric mucin which involves: reduction, alkylation, desialylation, periodate oxidation with beta-elimination and two-steps of TFMSA/anisole treatment. In the 1980s there was overbuilding of facilities of all kinds, including facilities with acute psychiatric beds. A subsequent decrease in patient days in most of these hospitals caused significant excess capacity. With all the problems now confronting mental healthcare facilities, it may be difficult to focus attention on hospital buildings; however, intelligent planning for the use of these large investments may be part of an overall solution. An awareness of problems facing our facility managers should enhance the planning process and minimize unwanted surprises.

A mixture of 40% octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8) and 60% air was used clinically in eight patients with long-standing retinal detachment. In seven cases the retina reattached after intravitreal injection of C4F8 and intrascleral diathermization of the retinal tear. The one failure was due to massive vitreous retraction and preretinal proliferation prior to the surgery. Except for a slight postoperative iritis when 4 cc of gas lasted for 12 to 30 days after intravitreal injection. On the basis of this and our previous studies, we recommend the use of C4F8 in retinal detachment surgery.

We used public monitoring records concurrent with the first month of gestation to assess exposure.
