BACKGROUND: NETosis is a unique form of cell death leading to the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which may be responsible for many of the serious complications of COVID-19, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cytokine storm, thromboembolic complications, acute organ dysfunction, and multiorgan failure.
AIMS: The aim was to assess the relationship between markers of NETosis [citrullinated histones (Cit-H3), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and elastase] and COVID-19, as well as its severity.

BACKGROUND: Autoantibodies such as rheumatoid factor (RF) and anticitrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPAs) are useful tools for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The presence of ACPAs against citrullinated proteins (CPs), especially citrullinated fibrinogen (cFBG), seems to be a useful serological marker for diagnosing RA. BACKGROUND: Peptidylarginine deiminase type 4 (PAD4/PADI4) post-translationally converts peptidylarginine to citrulline. Recent studies suggest that PADI4 represses expression of p53-regulated genes via citrullination of histones at gene promoters.
METHODS: Expression of PADI4 was investigated in various tumors and non-tumor tissues (n = 1673) as well as in A549, SKOV3 and U937 tumor cell lines by immunohistochemistry, real-time PCR, and western blot. Tumor-infiltrating plasma cells are key responders to immunotherapy. Polymyositis is a connective tissue disease. Although myositis is the dominant clinical manifestation, internal organs may also be affected. Arthritis occurs in 30% of patients, especially in the course of the anti-synthetase syndrome. We report on a case of a woman with polymyositis and interstitial lung disease. Arthritis and the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in the patient's serum may suggest the diagnosis of the overlap syndrome.
