Assessing the Adoption of One Health Approaches in National Plans to Combat Health Threats: The Pilot of a One Health Conceptual Framework in Armenia.

Due to several factors, such as environmental and climate changes, the risk of health threats originating at the human-animal-environment interface, including vector-borne diseases (VBDs) and zoonoses, is increasing. Low-resource settings struggle to counter these multidimensional risks due to their already-strained health systems and are therefore disproportionally affected by the impact caused by these changes. Systemic approaches like One Health (OH) are sought to strengthen prevention and preparedness strategies by addressing the drivers of potential threats with a multidisciplinary and mu

Assessment of Thermal and Hydrolytic Stabilities and Aqueous Solubility of Artesunate for Formulation Studies.

For the purpose of establishing the optimum processing parameters and storage conditions associated with nanolipid formulations of the artemisinin derivative artesunate, it was necessary to evaluate the thermal stability and solubility profiles of artesunate in aqueous solutions at various temperatures and pH. The effect of increased temperature and humidity on artesunate was determined by storing samples of the raw material in a climate chamber for 3 months and analyzing these by an established HPLC method. Artesunate remained relatively stable during storage up to 40°C ± 0.5°C and 75% relati

Dehydration Alters Transcript Levels in the Mosquito Midgut, Likely Facilitating Rapid Rehydration following a Bloodmeal.

The mosquito midgut is an important site for bloodmeal regulation while also acting as a primary site for pathogen exposure within the mosquito. Recent studies show that exposure to dehydrating conditions alters mosquito bloodfeeding behaviors as well as post-feeding regulation, likely altering how pathogens interact with the mosquito. Unfortunately, few studies have explored the underlying dynamics between dehydration and bloodmeal utilization, and the overall impact on disease transmission dynamics remains veiled. In this study, we find that dehydration-based feeding in the yellow fever mosq

Secondary and Tertiary Prevention: Medical Rehabilitation.

Allergies are a major public health burden, and targeted measures are required in terms of prevention and treatment. The most common allergic conditions encompass atopic dermatitis (AD), food allergy (FA), allergic asthma (AA), and allergic rhino-conjunctivitis (AR). Primary prevention aims at preventing the onset of allergic disease, before the disease process begins. Secondary prevention aims at preventing progression and exacerbation of allergic disease whereas tertiary prevention aims at reducing disease burden in patients with established disease, by allergen immunotherapy (AIT) or medica

Monitoring human arboviral diseases through wastewater surveillance: Challenges, progress and future opportunities.

Arboviral diseases are caused by a group of viruses spread by the bite of infected arthropods. Amongst these, dengue, Zika, west nile fever and yellow fever cause the greatest economic and social impact. Arboviral epidemics have increased in frequency, magnitude and geographical extent over the past decades and are expected to continue increasing with climate change and expanding urbanisation. Arboviral prevalence is largely underestimated, as most infections are asymptomatic, nevertheless existing surveillance systems are based on passive reporting of loosely defined clinical syndromes with i

The global status and genetic characterization of hydatidosis in camels (Camelus dromedarius): a systematic literature review with meta-analysis based on published papers.

Hydatidosis is a potential zoonotic helminthic disease affecting a broad spectrum of mammals, including humans, worldwide. The current review was conducted to investigate the genotypic status and prevalence of hydatid disease in camels across the world. For the purpose of the study, the articles addressing the worldwide prevalence of hydatidosis in camels were searched in several English language databases. The search process resulted in the inclusion of 122 papers. Based on the data presented in the reviewed articles, the pooled prevalence of hydatid disease in camels across the world was mea

Multiple ecological processes underpin the eruptive dynamics of small mammals: House mice in a semi-arid agricultural environment.

Mouse plagues are a regular feature of grain-growing regions, particularly in southern and eastern Australia, yet it is not clear what role various ecological processes play in the eruptive dynamics generating these outbreaks. This research was designed to assess the impact of adding food, water, and cover in all combinations on breeding performance, abundance, and survival of mouse populations on a typical cereal growing farm in northwestern Victoria.Supplementary food, water, and cover were applied in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design to 240 m sections of internal fence lines between wheat or barl

A signature of dynamic biogeography: enclaves indicate past species replacement.

Understanding how species have replaced each other in the past is important to predicting future species turnover. While past species replacement is difficult to detect after the fact, the process may be inferred from present-day distribution patterns. Species with abutting ranges sometimes show a characteristic distribution pattern, where a section of one species range is enveloped by that of the other. Such an enclave could indicate past species replacement: when a species is partly supplanted by a competitor, but a population endures locally while the invading species moves around and past

Abundant iron and sulfur oxidizers in the stratified sediment of a eutrophic freshwater reservoir with annual cyanobacterial blooms.

The microbial community in eutrophic freshwater sediment was investigated from a 67-cm-deep sediment core collected from the Daechung Reservoir in South Korea, where cyanobacterial blooms have occurred annually for the past 30 years. The majority of core sediments were characterized by dark-grayish, fine-grained mud with abundant gas-escaped and thinly laminated layers. Intervals of summer and winter seasons were represented by periodic peaks of geochemical profiles of parameters such as grain size and relative carbon mass ratios to various nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Synchronisms between bud and cambium phenology in black spruce: early-flushing provenances exhibit early xylem formation.

Bud and cambial phenology represent the adaptation of species to the local environment that allows the growing season to be maximized while minimizing the risk of frost for the developing tissues. The temporal relationship between the apical and radial meristems can help in the understanding of tree growth as a whole process. The aim of this study was to compare cambial phenology in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) provenances classified as early and late bud flushing. The different phases of cambial phenology were assessed on wood microcores sampled weekly from April to October in

Growth under elevated air temperature alters secondary metabolites in Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings in Cd- and Pb-contaminated soils.

Plant secondary metabolites play a pivotal role in growth regulation, antioxidant activity, pigment development, and other processes. As the global climate changes, increasing atmospheric temperatures and contamination of soil by heavy metals co-occur in natural ecosystems, which alters the pH of rhizosphere soil and influences the bioavailability and mobility of metals. Elevated temperatures in combination with heavy metals are expected to affect plant secondary metabolites, but this issue has not been extensively examined. Here, we investigated secondary metabolites in Robiniapseudoacacia se

Influence of environmental factors on removal of oxides of nitrogen by a photocatalytic coating.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from combustion processes have elevated concentrations in large urban areas. They cause a range of adverse health effects, acid rain, and are precursors to formation of other atmospheric pollutants, such as ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and inorganic aerosols. Photocatalytic materials containing a semi-conductor that can be activated by sunlight, such as titanium dioxide, have been studied for their ability to remove NOx. The study presented herein aims to elucidate the environmental parameters that most influence the NOx removal efficiency of photocatalytic coatin

Arctic stratospheric ozone depletion and increased UVB radiation: potential impacts to human health.

Contrary to popular belief, stratospheric ozone depletion, and the resultant increase in solar UV-B (280-320 nm), are unlikely to fully recover soon. Notwithstanding the success of the Montreal Protocol in reducing the amount of ozone destroying chemicals into the stratosphere, the life-times of these compounds are such that even with full compliance with the Protocol by all countries, it will be decades before stratospheric ozone could return to pre-1980 levels. This raises the question, therefore, of what will happen to biological processes essential to the maintenance of life on earth which

[Paranasal sinuses: only one of nature's games?].

BACKGROUND: Many theories exist concerning the function of paranasal sinuses, but it is rather difficult to definitively name the right one. Despite the fact that many of them have been proved to be wrong, they are still used. THEORIES: Galen postulated 2000 years ago that they were "porous bones", which helped with weight reduction. Like Galen's theory, most of the others have been refuted as well. A list of these refuted theories covers a range of postulated functions including a relative warming or moistening of the breath, protection against high pressure in the nasal region when sneezing

Preservation of Fungi by Suspension in Liquid Medium: Fundamentals, Applications, and Challenges.

Preserving fungi in liquid media is an essential strategy for maintaining long-term viability, genetic stability, and phenotypic characteristics across diverse fungal species. Among the most widely used methods are storage in sterile distilled water, storage in mineral oil, and cryopreservation. Each technique is based on biological and biochemical principles, such as metabolic suppression, osmotic balance, protection against oxidative stress, and induction of quiescence. These principles minimize cell damage, maintain structural integrity, and ensure the recovery of highly viable cultures. Th

Potential Use of Carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) Biopolymers in Edible Food Packaging.

The increasing interest in environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and edible packaging materials today has brought the use of agricultural-derived functional biopolymers to the forefront. The carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) pod, with its rich biopolymer components such as carob gum (LBG) in its seeds and pectin and cellulose in its pulp, has high potential in the development of edible packaging matrices. Although these biopolymers exhibit limited water vapor barrier capacity due to their hydrophilic nature, they provide moderate to high barrier properties against oxygen and carbon dioxide. Syne

Eating green together: A qualitative study to explore children's motivations and role in household decision making for environmentally sustainable diets.

A transition towards more environmentally sustainable dietary patterns is crucial to mitigate the impact of current dietary habits on global climate change. Children represent a key target group in this transition, since they are in the process of developing their dietary habits and environmental attitudes, and they will bear the long-term consequences of today's dietary choices. Therefore, this study aims to explore the motivations of children aged 8 to 12 for environmentally sustainable dietary patterns, as well as how they communicate about and attempt to influence their parent sustainable

Phytohormone-microbiome interactions and epigenetic regulation of plant stress responses and priming.

Plants continuously face fluctuating environmental conditions, requiring tightly coordinated regulatory systems to balance growth and stress responses. This review synthesizes current knowledge on phytohormones as central integrators of plant-microbiome interactions, highlighting their dual role as internal regulators and ecological gatekeepers that shape microbiome assembly and function. Phytohormones, such as auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid, ethylene, salicylic acid, and jasmonates, dynamically regulate plant development, immunity, and rhizosphere chemistry, thereby influenci

Multi-Decadal Dynamics of Wetland Methane Emissions Revealed by Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning.

Measurement of methane fluxes (FCH4) from natural systems, such as wetlands, has lagged far behind carbon dioxide fluxes. Short and fragmented wetland FCH4 data limit our ability to assess its long-term dynamics and potential climate feedbacks. Extrapolating short-term FCH4 records to recent decades remains challenging for both process-based models and data-driven machine learning (ML) approaches. Here, we develop a knowledge-guided ML framework that integrates eddy covariance (EC) FCH4 observations, field warming experiments, and biogeochemical knowledge to reconstruct the long-term FCH4 budg

Delivery Riders at the Crossroads of Occupational Health, Climate Change, and Algorithmic Management.

Delivery riders have become a defining workforce of contemporary urban economies, yet existing occupational health frameworks remain poorly adapted to the realities of platform-mediated work. This editorial proposes a shift from static, factor-based models of risk toward a dynamic and cumulative perspective, and provides a comparative classification of regulatory approaches worldwide, highlighting how jurisdictions are addressing, or failing to address, the occupational risks of platform work. Riders operate at the intersection of three interacting domains: algorithmic management, environmenta
