PURPOSE: Anorectal malformations are associated with other organ malformations. Proximodistal elongation of the cloacal plate and anal opening at its distal end are essential for anal development. However, the anal developmental stage in which Wnt5a is directly involved remains unelucidated. The frequent use of prenatal diagnostic techniques including ultrasound and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein has increasingly led to detection of abdominal wall defects before birth. This prenatal detection creates the opportunity to influence neonatal outcome by alteration in management of pregnancy or delivery. BACKGROUND: Cloacal anomalies are rare abnormalities with highly variable forms, which makes them difficult to diagnose antenatally. We present a cloacal anomaly case with interesting antenatal ultrasonographic findings.
CASE: A 24-year-old woman, gravida 1, para 0, presented at 23 weeks' gestation with ultrasonographic evidence of fetal ascites. Over a 10-year period, 173 isolates of Salmonella were obtained during routine isolation from reptiles. Of the 173 isolates, 92 different Salmonella serovars were identified. Of them, 61 (66%) belonged to subspecies I, nine to subspecies II and 21 to subspecies III (IIIa and IIIb), and one to subspecies IV. CASE REPORT: A nulliparous woman presented with high fever, low blood pressure, and signs of infection during artificial legal abortion with laminaria placement for cervical dilatation.
