Attentional set-shifting deficit in Parkinson's disease is associated with prefrontal dysfunction: an FDG-PET study.

The attentional set-shifting deficit that has been observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) has long been considered neuropsychological evidence of the involvement of meso-prefrontal and prefrontal-striatal circuits in cognitive flexibility. However, recent studies have suggested that non-dopaminergic, posterior cortical pathologies may also contribute to this deficit. Although several neuroimaging studies have addressed this issue, the results of these studies were confounded by the use of tasks that required other cognitive processes in addition to set-shifting, such as rule learning and working…

Cognitive components underpinning the development of model-based learning.

Reinforcement learning theory distinguishes "model-free" learning, which fosters reflexive repetition of previously rewarded actions, from "model-based" learning, which recruits a mental model of the environment to flexibly select goal-directed actions. Whereas model-free learning is evident across development, recruitment of model-based learning appears to increase with age. However, the cognitive processes underlying the development of model-based learning remain poorly characterized. Here, we examined whether age-related differences in cognitive processes underlying the construction and fle

Association of physical fitness with cognitive function in the community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive function generally declines with the aging process. Although the association of physical fitness with cognitive function has been proved, how many and how well the physical fitness components are linked to cognitive function is not clear. This study aimed to examine the association of physical fitness with cognitive function, and find out which aspects of physical fitness components are the most closely related to cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March to July 2019. The sample consisted of 107 o

The interplay between executive function and learning disabilities: Developmental cognitive neuroscience perspectives on reading, math, and ADHD.

The term "Executive function" (EF) describes domain-general cognitive processes including working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility among others, that are essential for academic learning and behavioral regulation. Growing evidence highlights the importance of EF not only in typical development but also in understanding and intervening in learning disabilities (LDs), including dyslexia and dyscalculia, and in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Despite this recognition, challenges remain in clearly defining EF, specifying its neurobiological underpinnings, and u…

[Executive Dysfunction in Patients Undergoing Chronic Haemodialysis Treatment: A Possible Symptom of Vascular Dementia].

Introduction. Patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis (HD) treatment have an 8-10 times higher risk of experiencing stroke events and deve … ction integrity. Conclusions. More than half of the patients had deficit scores on the FAB. Reduced cognitive flexibility, high sensitivity to interference, poor inhibitory control and impaired motor programming with the dominant hand were evident. In conclusion, a marked impairment of the executive functions, generally located in the frontal lobes of the brain, was de …

Differential effects of sertraline and cognitive behavioural therapy on behavioural inhibition in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) randomised to sertraline, manualised cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), or combination (sertraline + CBT), underwent cognitive assessment. Cognitive testing was conducted at baseline and at week 16. The stop signal reaction time task (SSRT) was used to evaluate motor impulsivity and attentional flexibility was evaluated using the intra/extra-dimensional set shifting task. Paired-samples t -tests or nonparametric variants were used to compare baseline and posttreatment scores within each treatment group. Forty-five patients were tested at base

History of learning disorders is associated with worse cognitive and functional outcomes in schizophrenia: results from the multicentric FACE-SZ cross-sectional dataset.

Schizophrenia is associated with early neurodevelopmental disorders, including most frequently learning disorders (LD), among them dyslexia and dyspraxia. Despite the demonstrated links between schizophrenia and LD, specific clinical patterns of the schizophrenia with a history of LD subgroup remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate cognitive impairment, symptoms and functional outcome associated with a history of LD in a large cross-sectional, multicentric, sample of schizophrenia subjects. 492 community-dwelling subjects with schizophrenia (75.6% male, mean age 30.8 ye

Tendency to ruminate and anxiety are associated with altered alpha and beta oscillatory power dynamics during memory for contextual details.

Rumination occurs when an individual becomes mentally stuck and cannot redirect attention away from an unwanted thought demonstrating cognitive inflexibility. Cognitive flexibility is important for various cognitive functions, including episodic memory. Trait rumination is a partial mediator in the relationship between depression and overgeneral episodic memory, suggesting that rumination may negatively influence memory for contextual details. Oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency bands are crucial for various cognitive functions (e.g., attention control and episodi…

Cognitive and neuropsychiatric impairments vary as a function of injury severity at 12 months post-experimental diffuse traumatic brain injury: Implications for dementia development.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common risk factor for later neurodegeneration, which can manifest as dementia. Despite this, little is kn … nction. Our results showed that moderate to severe TBI animals exhibited significant impairments in cognitive flexibility (p = 0.009) on the Barnes maze when compared to age-matched sham animals. Neither repetitive mild TBI nor single mild TBI animals showed significant functional impairments when compared to shams. Thus, this study provides the first insight into chro …

Does drinking have effects on mood and cognition in male and female students?

Self-ratings of mood and bodily symptoms were made by groups of IQ and education-matched male and female students [teetotal, low (2-9 units/week for both sexes; 1 UK unit=8 g alcohol) and moderate (12-34 units/week for males; 10-24 units/week for females) drinkers], before the start and at the end of cognitive testing. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) showed that there were significant Alcohol x Time interactions, because the teetotal group responded to the cognitive tests with greater increases in the factors of somatic anxiety and aggressive mood than did the other two groups. Social emotional functioning and cognitive styles in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Contemporary models of eating disorders (EDs) argue that both cognitive style (weak coherence and poor set shifting) and social emotional difficulties are involved in the maintenance of EDs. This study aimed to explore the factor structure of cognitive and social emotional functioning and to investigate whether a particular cognitive or social emotional profile was associated with a more severe and chronic form of illness. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used to investigate cognitive and social emotional functioning in people with EDs compared to healthy controls (HCs) and th

Effects of Exhibit Text Presentation Types on Visual Attention Patterns and Cognitive Load in Digital Museums: An Eye-Tracking Study.

Exhibit texts are commonly presented as labels or information panels near artworks to provide visitors with direct access to key exhibit information. Digital museums offer flexible and diverse ways to present artworks and communicate their cultural meanings. They also allow exhibit texts to be displayed in different formats, which may shape users' reading behavior and cognitive experience. This study used a repeated-measures, within-subject design (N = 38) to compare three types of exhibit text presentation: environment-based, object-based, and user-based. Eye tracking, the NASA Task Load Inde

The differential effect of strength, cognitive and aerobic training combinations on cognitive performance and functional abilities in elderly with cognitive decline: The Fit4Alz project.

BACKGROUND: Despite the global impact of neurodegenerative diseases and ongoing research efforts, pharmacological therapies have shown limited benefits. In contrast, physical exercise, with no side effects, has emerged as a non-pharmacological alternative that can enhance brain structure and function, promoting a healthier neurological phenotype. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the effects of aerobic and strength training methods, both with and without cognitive training, on mitigating or reversing cognitive decline in older adults. Executive functions in clinical and preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Executive functions is an umbrella term describing a wide range of higher order processes that allow the flexible modification of thought and behaviour in response to changing cognitive or environmental contexts. Impairment of executive functions is common in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. These deficits negatively affect everyday activities and hamper the ability to cope with other cognitive or behavioural disorders. In this paper, we propose a synthesis of the knowledge on executive impairments in clinical and preclinical Alzheimer's disease, mostly leaning on the c

Extracellular matrix remodelling in neurological diseases.

The neural extracellular matrix (ECM) in the CNS is a dynamic network of proteins and glycans that exists in multiple forms, including perineuronal nets, perisynaptic ECM and periaxonal coats. Together with the diffuse interstitial ECM, these components regulate synaptic stability, plasticity and network excitability. Behavioural studies highlight the crucial roles of ECM in shaping memory engrams and cognitive flexibility, positioning ECM as a promising therapeutic target for cognitive interventions across neurological diseases. ECM remodelling is a shared hallmark across multiple CNS disease…

Alpha-band temporal variability in the Fronto-parietal network facilitates active recovery from mental fatigue.

Mental fatigue from prolonged cognitive tasks impairs performance, yet this decline is often non-linear. This suggests the brain engages active self-regulatory mechanisms to recover, though the neural basis of this recovery process remains unclear. We investigated this phenomenon using electroencephalography (EEG) during a continuous 120-minute boundary avoidance task. Behaviorally, we confirmed a non-linear performance curve that featured a significant recovery stage following an initial decline. The decline stage showed classic neural fatigue signatures, including increased delta and alpha p
