40 cases of malaria seen in an 18 month period were reviewed. The clinical diagnosis was made by the general practitioner or casualty officer in 85%, and 45% of these were treated and discharged without further referral. In an area where a high awareness of malaria exists, uncomplicated Plasmodium vivax infection can be treated safely in the community. Primaquine should be given for the exo-erythrocyte stage and patients screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency before this.

Spontaneous abortions were analyzed in an industrialized Finnish community according to the occupation and workplace of both the women and their husbands. Information about spontaneous abortions and births was obtained from the hospital discharge register, and data about the women and their families were collected from census files. A survey of the thalassaemias has been undertaken in the Greek community of Cape Town. In a sample of 250 persons 3 were found to have the alpha-thalassaemia trait, and its prevalence can therefore be estimated to be 1,2%. The authors evaluated six acute short-stay admission wards in a community mental health center using the sociometric Ward Atmosphere Scale. There was an attempt to run three of the six wards as therapeutic communities. No differences were found on Ward Atmosphere Scale dimensions between the therapeutic communities and other types of programs, nor did the therapeutic communities conform to an empirically derived therapeutic community program dimension profile. Possible reasons for this failure and its implications for community mental health centers are discussed.

Responses to a symptom questionnaire, together with an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) estimation, were used to screen for polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in 247 elderly people receiving social services care. Three cases of PMR were discovered of whom two were previously undiagnosed. The prevalence of PMR in this study is higher than that estimated from hospital ascertained cases.

Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from cloacal swab pools from ducks in processing plants, and from cloacal and conjunctival swab pools from ducks on farms, in a small proportion of the samples examined. Out of 1011 leprosy patients, 200 (20%) cases with permanent deformities were found in the Leprosy Control Unit, Raxaul (East Champaran), Bihar. The statistical data of selected patients and the types of various deformities are presented. The prevalence rate and incidence pattern of deformities reported by other workers are compared.

Municipal swimming pools and wading pools were examined for the presence of human enteric viruses using a portable virus concentrator at the site to concentrate viruses from 100-gallon to 500-gallon samples. Ten of 14 samples contained viruses; three of these were positive for virus in the presence of residual free chlorine.
