Maternal immunization in Malawi: A mixed methods study of community perceptions, programmatic considerations, and recommendations for future planning.

BACKGROUND: Safe, effective vaccines are given to pregnant women to protect their infants and/or themselves against certain infectious agents; however, apart from tetanus vaccination, maternal immunization in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains low. Tetanus toxoid vaccine is integrated into antenatal care services in Malawi with high coverage and provides an opportunity to identify factors that facilitate successful immunization delivery to pregnant women in LMICs. METHODS: PATH and the University of Malawi's Centre for Social Research conducted a mixed-methods study in 2015 to d

Realities and experiences of community health volunteers as agents for behaviour change: evidence from an informal urban settlement in Kisumu, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers play an important role in health service delivery and are increasingly involved in behaviour change interventions, including for hygiene-related behaviour change. However, their role and capacity to deliver behaviour change interventions, particularly in high-density urban settlements, remain under-researched. This study examines the behaviour change-related activities of community health volunteers (CHVs)-community health workers affiliated with the Kenyan Ministry of Health-in a peri-urban settlement in Kenya, in order to assess their capabilities, opport…

Meeting the reproductive health needs of female sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire: protecting the human right to dignified health.

The sexual and reproductive health needs of female sex workers (FSW) are often understudied and underserved in the context of HIV-related research in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa. We assessed the lived experiences of FSW across Côte d'Ivoire to characterize unmet reproductive health needs and opportunities to address them. From February-August, 2020, ENDA Santé, Côte d'Ivoire conducted 75 in-depth interviews and 15 focus group discussions with FSW and community informants in five cities in Côte d'Ivoire. Themes that emerged included the inconsistent use of contraception

Retrospective survey of human hydatidosis in Bahir Dar, north-western Ethiopia.

To determine the prevalence of human hydatidosis in Bahir Dar and the sex and age distribution and awareness, we used a questionnaire and retrospective analysis covering 5 years of the case reports at public health institutions in Bahir Dartown and the surrounding areas. We interviewed 244 individuals: 150 households, 32 abattoir workers, 30 butchers and 32 health professionals. None of the householders or butchers knew about cystic echinococcosis, nor did 25% of the health professionals; however, 100% of the abattoir workers and 75% of the health professionals recognized it. The householders

Healthcare worker training to improve quality of care for sexual and gender minority people in sub-Saharan Africa: learning from efforts in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Training in care for sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations is critical for ending the HIV epidemic. SGM people, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, experience disproportionate HIV infection across the globe. The objective of this commentary was to synthesize facilitators of and barriers to SGM health training efforts for healthcare workers in Uganda, in order to help inform potential priorities, strategies and next steps to advance culturally responsive HIV-related care for SGM communities across Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa. DISCUSSION: S

Diffusion of treatment in social networks and mass drug administration.

Information, behaviors, and technologies spread when people interact. Understanding these interactions is critical for achieving the greatest diffusion of public interventions. Yet, little is known about the performance of starting points (seed nodes) for diffusion. We track routine mass drug administration-the large-scale distribution of deworming drugs-in Uganda. We observe friendship networks, socioeconomic factors, and treatment delivery outcomes for 16,357 individuals in 3491 households of 17 rural villages. Each village has two community medicine distributors (CMDs), who are the seed nod

Evaluation of a community-based HIV preventive intervention for female sex workers in rural areas of Karnataka State, south India.

To examine changes in behavioral outcomes among rural female sex workers (FSWs) involved in a community-based comprehensive HIV preventive intervention program in south India. A total of 14, 284 rural FSWs were reached by means of a community-based model for delivering outreach, medical, and referral services. Changes in behavior were assessed using 2 rounds of polling booth surveys conducted in 2008 and 2011. In all, 95% of the mapped FSWs were reached at least once, 80.3% received condoms as per need, and 71% received health services for sexually transmitted infections. There was a significa

Barriers to the Utilization of Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Services among Health Care Workers in Southwest, Nigeria: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal mortality remain major public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Nigeria. Although Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) services are designed to prevent most maternal and neonatal deaths, their utilization remains suboptimal due to several contextual barriers. This study explored barriers to the utilization of BEmONC services in selected primary healthcare centres in Oyo State, Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: An exploratory qualitative study using Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) was conducted among healthcare work

Simple spectacles for adult refugees on the Thailand-Burma border.

PURPOSE: This article describes the development of, and outputs from, a program in which trained refugee health workers provided spherical lenses to adult refugees along the Thailand-Burma border. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2001, the International Rescue Committee trained 48 refugee health workers in basic refraction courses. Once trained, these health workers conduct weekly eye clinics in several refugee camps and one migrant community covering a total population of 142,000. We supplied spherical lenses in 11 powers from +1.00 to +4.00 in 0.50-D steps and from -1.00 to -2.50 in 0.50-D steps.

Leptospirosis in sugarcane plantation and fishing communities in Kagera northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease of worldwide importance, though relatively neglected in many African countries including sub Saharan Africa that is among areas with high burden of this disease. The disease is often mistaken for other febrile illnesses such as dengue, malaria, rickettsioses and enteric fever. Leptospirosis is an occupational disease likely to affect people working in environments prone to infestation with rodents which are the primary reservoir hosts of this disease. Some of the populations at risk include: sugarcane plantation workers, wetland farmers

We describe the participatory cultural adaptation of EBIs to establish a multigenerational mindfulness-based and resilience enhancing family program for war-affected families with adolescent youth. METHODS: The study team integrated conceptual and pragmatic approaches to

Lived Experiences of Health Workers in the Implementation of Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis Deworming Program in South Cotabato: A Phenomenological Inquiry.

BACKGROUND: The deworming program, also known as preventive chemotherapy, is one of the most important strategies in combatting Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis. With more than two decades of implementation, only a few countries have reached the target deworming coverage of 75% by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the Philippines, the national deworming coverage from 2018 to 2022 is still below both the WHO and the Department of Health's target deworming coverage. As a result, there is an increasing prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis among populations in endemic areas in the coun
