Vestibular papillomatosis: a benign condition mimicking genital warts.

Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) is a benign condition of the female genitalia that may be mistaken for condyloma acuminatum (genital warts). In contrast to condylomata, lesions of VP each grow from a distinct mucosal insertion; match the color of the surrounding mucosa; and are symmetrically distributed, limited to the inner labia minora and vaginal introitus. Recognition of this entity will help to prevent unnecessary stress, testing, and discomfort.

HPV vaccine update: new indications and controversies.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has a predilection for infecting epidermal and mucosal surfaces such as those of the anogenital region. HPV causes substantial pre-malignant, malignant, and benign disease in both women and men, ranging from cervical, vulvar, penile, and anal cancers to condyloma acuminata (genital warts). Although HPV vaccination is becoming more common, infection rates remain high in both genders. Perception of HPV vaccine has largely centered on its ability to prevent cervical cancer in women, though indication for its use in men is expanding. The benefits to men include preventio

Herpes simplex virus and human papillomavirus genital infections: new and investigational therapeutic options.

Human papillomavirus and Herpes simplex virus are the most common genital viral infections encountered in clinical practice worldwide. We reviewed the literature focusing on new and experimental treatment modalities for both conditions, based on to the evidence-based data available. The modalities evaluated include topical agents such as immune response modifiers (imiquimod, resiquimod, and interferon), antivirals (penciclovir, cidofovir, and foscarnet), sinecatechins, microbiocidals (SPL7013 gel, and PRO 2000 gel), along with experimental (oligodeoxynucleotides), immunoprophylactic, and immun

[Giant condyloma with malignant degeneration: a case report].

We report a case of giant condyloma with malignant degeneration. A 56-year-old male was referred to our hospital due to a penile infection that was resistant to antibiotic therapy for more than a year. The swelling appeared to be a penile cancer. We suspected malignancy and performed penile biopsies twice; however, the histopathological diagnosis was condyloma acuminatum and malignant findings were absent. We continued the antibiotic therapy for 3 months; however, no improvement was achieved. Therefore, total penectomy and urinary diversion were performed. The pathological diagnosis of the res

[Anorectal Buschke-Lowenstein tumor. (Three cases report)].

Buschke-Lowenstein tumor or giant condyloma acuminata is characterized by a proliferation locally aggressive with extensive tissue destruction. We report three cases of Buschke-Lowenstein tumor with anorectal localization. The histology is characterized by papillomatosis and endo or exophytic acanthosis secondary to papillomavirus. The variety of treatment regimens applied do not allow formulation of definitive therapeutic guidelines.

To cut a long story short - the use of imiquimod in resistant warts.

Persistent anogenital warts are frustrating and expensive to manage, both for the patient and the clinic. This case report illustrates prolonged and varied management, and eventual success with imiquimod.

The treatment of human papillomavirus lesions of the lower genital tract.

Anogenital warts are caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 infection, and are the most common clinical manifestation of lower genital tract human papillomavirus infection. They are the most frequently recognized sexually transmitted disease in the developed world, occurring at an incidence rate of 0.5-1.2% in young men and women aged 18-25 years. Many therapies for genital warts have been described, none being ideal in that all therapeutic modalities fail to clear the warts in a proportion of patients, and the recurrence of warts after successful treatment is seen with all treatments.

Podophyllin office therapy against condyloma should be abandoned.

Podophyllin, a crude plant extract with low efficacy, high toxicity, and a serious mutagenicity profile does not comply with the WHO guidelines for plant derived treatments and should be removed from clinical treatment protocols. Home treatment with pharmaceutical products based on podophyllotoxin-the purified, standardised active antiwart ingredient of podophyllin-represents safe and effective first line therapy for patients with anogenital warts.

The cellular immune system in female patients with or without genital warts: a study of peripheral white blood cell components.

The immune system plays a vital role in the fight against infections. The commonest viral infections treated in the genitourinary medicine (GUM) departments are genital warts. Knowledge about the status of the immune system in these patients may help in their clinical management. This study compares the values of various blood cell components in the peripheral blood of 2 groups of female patients--those with genital warts against those without genital warts. The mean monocyte count was lower among patients with genital warts.
