Application of Bathurin and borax in the biological control of Monomorium pharaonis in housing estates.

Of two apartment houses infested with ants of the species Monomorium pharaonis, one was treated with a biological, the other with a chemical substance. In the first case we used Bathurin in combination with borax at a concentration of 1.3% for both substances. In the first week, borax was added to the bait (minced beef), within the next three weeks, the bait was mixed with Bathurin. The procedure was repeated 5 times. After this period, we achieved complete control of the ants on the infested premises.--Our results obtained with the chemical substance (the insecticide Anthrix) were less succes

Why Healthcare Providers are Well Positioned to Talk to Patients About Medical Marijuana.

Healthcare providers are well-positioned to talk to patients about medical and recreational, a.k.a., adult, marijuana, a.k.a., cannabis. However, providers and patients alike experience concerns about discussing the known medical and therapeutic uses of marijuana. This commentary provides a legal overview on how healthcare providers can navigate federal and state legal laws and restrictions to discuss the risks and benefits of marijuana and recommend it to their patients. While marijuana is still federally illegal under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), providers may not reali…

Acute oesophageal necrosis following ethyl-induced emesis: A Case Report.

Acute oesophageal necrosis, also known as black oesophagus or Gurvits syndrome, is a rare condition characterized by black discoloration of the distal oesophageal mucosa due to mucosal necrosis, typically with an abrupt transition at the gastroesophageal junction. We report a case of Gurvits syndrome in a 73-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and recent alcohol-induced vomiting, without ingestion of caustic substances. The patient experienced epigastric pain while remaining hemodynamically stable without significant biochemical abnormalities. Following supportive ther

New Herbal Biomedicines for the Topical Treatment of Dermatological Disorders.

Herbal extracts and isolated plant compounds play an increasing role in the treatment of skin disorders and wounds. Several new herbal drugs, medicinal products and cosmetic products for the treatment of various skin conditions have been developed in recent years. In this nonsystematic review, we focus on herbal drugs that were tested in controlled clinical studies or in scientifically sound preclinical studies. The herbal biomedicines are intended to treat atopic dermatitis (St. John's wort, licorice, tormentil, bitter substances, evening primrose), psoriasis (araroba tree, lace flower, barbe

[Venous compression in venous insufficiency].

Compression is a mandatory therapeutic measure in all stages of venous insufficiency. This treatment, recommended by the French Health Authority (HAS), is consistently included in the protocols of therapeutic studies involving venous ulcers. Given the great variety in materials available and in the approaches of individual doctors, it is essential to avoid a dogmatic approach and instead to adapt treatment to the therapeutic results based on the premise that well-controlled treatment should result in improvement in trophic disorders and in patient comfort, while poor treatment is badly tolerat

[The placebo effect in inflammatory bowel disease].

Since time immemorial, placebos have been used in the treatment of patients with very different diseases. Interest in these substances has recently been renewed, since the use of placebo-controlled clinical trials has become the most useful tool to demonstrate the efficacy of a particular drug in patients with specific diseases. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), both in Crohn's disease and in ulcerative colitis, highly significant results have been obtained in patients in the placebo arm of clinical trials, surpassing even those achieved with drugs in other studies. Patients with IBD show c

Adverse events associated with classic psychedelics and MDMA: a real-world population-based study using the WHO pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase).

Psychedelic use has greatly increased within clinical and recreational settings over recent years. While demonstrating a favorable safety profile within certain clinical populations, little empirical research has explored safety of psychedelic use within real-world samples. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) VigiBase, a comprehensive global pharmacovigilance database with voluntary spontaneous reporting of adverse events (AEs) from real-world clinical and recreational populations, we examined reports for classic psychedelics and MDMA. Most reports were made for MDMA (n = 1573) and LSD (

Heterogeneity in prenatal substance use screening despite universal screening recommendations: findings from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends universal screening for tobacco, alcohol, and drug use as a part of routine prenatal care. However, little is known about the prevalence of prenatal substance use screening or factors that may contribute to differential rates of screening during prenatal care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of prenatal substance use screening by substance, year, state, and state-level prenatal substance use policies and to examine individual-level factors associated with receipt of screening. STUDY DESIGN:

[Oxidative stress and its role in respiratory diseases].

Insufficient elimination of free radicals can induce a number of harmful effects including a damage of important molecules, injury of genetic information and failure of the control and regulatory processes, and even may contribute to malignancy. Free radicals probably participate in various respiratory diseases (e.g. adult respiratory distress syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, asthma). Antioxidants, as substances neutralizing effect of free radical, contribute to the protection of organism. Both many exogenous substances, e.g. enzymes, and exogenous substance

Retention in substance abuse treatment. Role of psychiatric symptom severity.

The authors investigated the association between psychiatric symptom severity and subsequent treatment retention among substance abusers. The Symptom Check List-90-R was administered, after admission to an addiction treatment facility, to 308 male and 106 female clients with moderate-to-severe substance abuse problems. Mean scores on nine symptom and three summary scales were computed. Controlling for other sociodemographic and treatment variables, somatization was significantly associated with dropout from specialized outpatient and inpatient treatment programs. This study, however, suggests

Risk of severe driver injury by driving with psychoactive substances.

Driving with alcohol and other psychoactive substances imposes an increased risk of severe injury accidents. In a population-based case-control design, the relative risks of severe driver injury (MAIS≥2) by driving with ten substance groups were approximated by odds ratios (alcohol, amphetamines, benzoylecgonine, cocaine, cannabis, illicit opiates, benzodiazepines and Z-drugs, i.e. zolpidem and zopiclone, medicinal opioids, alcohol-drug combinations and drug-drug combinations). Data from six countries were included in the study: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

Introduction to the special issue.

This special issue of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice, "Addiction treatment access and utilization among criminal justice involved populations", presents a series of articles on substance use disorder treatment access and utilization by people who have contact with the criminal justice system (e.g., jails, prisons, and courts). Despite the high prevalence of substance use disorders among people who experience these settings, evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders may be unavailable and/or care may be fragmented during transitions between settings. Outcomes of Offenders With Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders and Mental Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Whether a diagnosis of a mental disorder contributes to the risk of poorer correctional outcomes is controversial. This study aimed to clarify the extent to which mental and substance use disorders individually and in combination contribute to correctional outcomes in order to determine optimal treatment and promote public safety. METHODS: Differences were examined between four groups of federal offenders in Canada (N=715): those with a mental disorder only, those with a substance use disorder only, those with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, and those with no disor

Temporal Relationship of Sex Risk Behaviors and Substance Use Severity Among Men in Substance Use Treatment.

Sex risk behaviors and substance use are intertwined. Many men continue to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors even when enrolled in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. We hypothesized that changes in sex risk behaviors would coincide with changes in drug/alcohol use severity among men in SUD treatment. During an HIV risk-reduction trial, men in methadone maintenance and outpatient drug-free treatment (N = 359) completed assessments at baseline and six months after. We assessed changes in sex risk and substance use severity, using the Addiction Severity Index-Lite (ASI-Lite), controlling

Substance abuse and psychiatric disorders in HIV-positive patients: epidemiology and impact on antiretroviral therapy.

There is a high prevalence of substance abuse and psychiatric disorders among HIV-infected individuals. Importantly, drug and alcohol-use disorders are frequently co-morbid with depression, anxiety and severe mental illness. Not only do these disorders increase the risk of contracting HIV, they have also been associated with decreased highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) utilisation, adherence and virological suppression. The literature evaluating the relationship between substance abuse and HIV outcomes has primarily focused on injection drug users, although there has been increasing

OBSERVATIONS ON THE PRESENCE OF A TOXIC SUBSTANCE IN THE BLOOD AND URINE OF PATIENTS WITH SCARLET FEVER.

A series of observations on the blood of patients acutely ill with scarlet fever has shown that a toxic substance can be demonstrated in the serum by means of intracutaneous injections of the serum in persons who have not had scarlet fever and whose serums fail to blanch the rash in scarlet fever. The reaction caused by this substance consists of a bright red local erythema, varying from 20 to 70 mm. in diameter, of 1 to 4 days duration. The severer reactions are moderately indurated and tender, and are followed bypigmentation and desquamation. Control injections in persons whose serums blanch
