Parathyroid cyst presenting as acute pancreatitis: report of a case.

We report the first case of hypercalcemia-induced acute pancreatitis caused by a functioning parathyroid cyst in a 67-year-old man. Laboratory investigation revealed increased serum amylase and lipase, increased serum ionized calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, and decreased serum phosphate, indicating pancreatitis and primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed mild swelling of the pancreatic head with peri-pancreatic fat infiltration and fluid collection around the pancreatic tail. Ultrasonography and CT of the neck showed a cystic lesion at the

Duplication cyst of the sigmoid colon.

A 21-year-old male with developmental delay presented with abdominal pain of two days' duration. He was afebrile and his abdomen was soft with mild diffuse tenderness. There were no peritoneal signs. Plain x-ray demonstrated a large air-filled structure in the right upper quadrant. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a 9 x 8 cm structure adjacent to the hepatic flexure containing an air-fluid level. It did not contain oral contrast and had no apparent communication with the colon. At operation, the cystic lesion was identified as a duplication cyst of the sigmoid colon that was adheren

Large cystic cavernous angioma of the cerebellum mimicking pilocytic astrocytoma.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Cavernous angiomas are relatively rare vascular malformations. They are generally located supratentorially with a rare incidence in the cerebellum. Cavernous angiomas, accompanied by a large cyst, are very rare. We present a case of a cavernous angioma with the unusual MRI findings of a large cyst and a small mural nodule. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient was a 48-year-old man who complained of a history of dizziness for several weeks. The neurologic examination in the neurosurgery clinic was without deficit. INTERVENTION: The cyst measured 4.7x4.0 cm and containe

[Anesthetic management of four pediatric patients with CCAM for pulmonary lobectomy].

We report perioperative management of four pediatric patients with congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) for pulmonary lobectomy under general anesthesia combined with thoracic epidural anesthesia. The patients were two newborn infants and two infants. A 23-day-old girl whose cyst contained air and a one-day-old girl whose cyst content was drained percutaneously before induction, showed uneventful courses during perioperative period. In a one-yr-old boy with a cyst filled with purulent material, the endotracheal tube became nearly occluded with copious purulent material during oper

[MR morphology of primary aneurysmal bone cysts: a retrospective analysis of 38 cases].

PURPOSE: To define MR imaging characteristics of primary aneurysmal bone cyst. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR imaging studies of 38 patients with histologically proven primary aneurysmal bone cyst were reviewed with reference to morphological features, signal characteristics, and patterns of contrast-enhancement. RESULT: Most lesions were well marginated towards bone and soft tissues (95%), either surrounded by a complete (84%) or incomplete (16%) rim of low signal intensity on images of all pulse sequences. Frequent features were polycyclic margins (84%), cortical expansion (87%), cystic spaces

Occult intrasacral meningocele with tethered cord--case report.

A 32-year-old female presented with a history of intermittent, severe lower back pain, exacerbated by pregnancy and persisting for several years. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a sacral mass as a low signal intensity area on the T1-weighted image and a high signal intensity area on the T2-weighted image, consistent with a cystic structure containing cerebrospinal fluid. A tethered cord attached to the thecal sac was also confirmed. Sacral laminectomy revealed thinned sacral vertebral laminae, but no neuronal elements existed within the cyst. The cyst was attached to the distal thecal s

Image-guided aspiration of solitary occult breast 'cysts'.

During the 30-month period from March 1, 1988, through August 31, 1990, image-guided aspirations of 183 solitary occult breast masses, which were considered possible cysts, were performed. Indications for aspiration included (1) mass on mammography, either invisible on ultrasonography or with features atypical of a cyst, in 111 patients; (2) enlarging solitary mass on mammography with ultrasonic features suggesting a cyst in 45 patients; and (3) mammographic mass with features typical of a cyst in 27 patients, with confirmation requested by the referring physician. Of the group, 151 (83%) lesi

Galactocele and prolactinoma--a pathogenic association?

A galactocele is a rare form of cystic, benign lesion of the breast, appearing when a mammary duct becomes obstructed and over filled with milk. It is usually found in postpartum women, either lactating or not. There are only a few cases reported that are not immediately linked to the lactation, as seen in postmenopausal women or in men. Furthermore, the relationship to overproduction of prolactine, a growth factor for the breast epithelium is not very well defined at this moment. We present such an unusual case of a 37-year-old female patient who has no history of birth or abortion. She was d

Natural History of Patients Followed Radiographically with Mucinous Cysts of the Pancreas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of patients presumed to have mucinous cysts of the pancreas who were initially selected for radiographic surveillance. METHODS: Patients with a pancreatic cyst and a measured cyst fluid carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) ≥192 ng/mL were included. Patients were stratified by those who underwent initial resection and those who were recommended for radiographic surveillance. The natural history of these two groups was examined. RESULTS: From 1999 to 2014, 227 patients were identified who had a cyst fluid CEA ≥192 ng/mL (median 961, range …

Rationale for early treatment of polycystic kidney disease.

In hereditary cystic disorders, renal injury begins with the formation of the first cyst. Renal injury may manifest as large kidneys, abdominal pain, hypertension and hematuria in children and young adults with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD) and ADPKD, cysts form primarily in collecting ducts and expand progressively. Collecting duct cysts that block urine flow have the potential to block urine formation in large numbers of upstream nephrons. In an ARPKD rat congenitally lacking vasopressin, only a few cysts developed until exogenous ar

The development of functional ovarian cysts during pituitary down-regulation.

This study investigated the development of functional ovarian cysts during pituitary down-regulation prior to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and identified 16 cases of cysts in 288 IVF cycles studied. Comparing the patients with functional ovarian cysts to the other 272 IVF cycles, there was no significant difference in age or incidence of endometriosis but significantly (P < 0.01) more patients with cysts had ovulatory dysfunction. The serum progesterone was < 5.7 nmol/l in all 16 patients with cysts on day 4 of the IVF cycle, and in eight of these patients the serum progesterone was < 5.7 nmo

Congenital Cystic Malformations of the Posterior Fossa: How Can Fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Contribute to the Diagnosis?

Congenital cystic malformations of the posterior cranial fossa encompass Dandy-Walker malformation, Blake's pouch cyst, and arachnoid cyst, which are usually associated with increased cerebrospinal fluid in the posterior fossa. Although isolated cerebellar vermis hypoplasia courses with a normal posterior fossa volume and is not associated with a cyst, the smaller volume of the cerebellar vermis results in a relative increase in cerebrospinal fluid compared to the posterior fossa volume and is considered a differential diagnosis. Furthermore, mega cisterna magna, which is an anatomical variant

Lumbosacral intraspinal extradural ganglion cyst in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 16-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred for chronic history of reluctance to jump, stiffness of the tail and lower back pain. Mild pelvic limb ataxia, reduced perianal reflex and lumbosacral discomfort were present on neurological examination. On magnetic resonance imaging, a well-defined rounded structure of 3 mm in diameter was identified on the right dorsal aspect of the epidural space at L7-S1, causing displacement of the cauda equina. The lesion was hyperintense to spinal cord parenchyma on T2-weighted images and hypointense on T1-weighted images, c

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst: a rare case in a middle aged patient.

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare entity, with about 20 cases reported in literature, only 3 of which are in patients over 40 years of age. We present a case of a 41 year old Latin American female who presented for evaluation of atraumatic chest pain with radiation to the left shoulder. Her initial workup was negative, including radiographic imaging of the chest and left shoulder. 4 months later, she presented to her orthopedic surgeon with a palpable mass and mild left shoulder pain. Radiographs acquired at that time demonstrated a 7.0 × 5.5 × 6.7 cm mass with rim calcification in th

Bronchogenic cyst with atypical imaging findings and repeated ruptures in a short period of time: A case report.

Bronchogenic cysts are the most common primary cysts of the mediastinum. Although most are asymptomatic, some bronchogenic cysts cause symptoms such as chest pain and dyspnea. Here, we report a case of bronchogenic cyst that ruptured twice in a short period of time in a patient who presented with sudden back pain. The lesion was apparent on computed tomography (CT) as a mass lesion with heterogeneous and high attenuation in the posterior mediastinal region. CT-guided puncture performed for diagnostic purposes revealed the contents as bloody fluid. The patient suffered chest pain approximately

Cross-sectional observational study evaluating the association between odontogenic cystic content and size.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and correlate the cystic content and the size of odontogenic cysts. METHODS: The study included 29 cases of odontogenic cysts reported in the Outpatient Department of Sharad Pawar Dental College. The cystic aspirate was analyzed for levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, total protein, globulin, albumin, and cholesterol. The sodium/potassium ratio was calculated. Pearson's correlation coefficient (ρ) was used to correlate the size of the cyst with the sodium/potassium ratio and other cystic contents. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS:

Endoscopic Transfontanellar Approach of a Cyst Anterior to the Brainstem Crossing the Foramen Magnum-Part II: Success of Multiple Fenestrations: Two-Dimensional Operative Video.

Premature infants with severe germinal matrix/intraventricular hemorrhage are at high risk of posthemorrhagic ventricular dilation and hydrocephalus (Video 1). We report a 4-month-old premature infant with grade III intraventricular hemorrhage and compartmentalized hydrocephalus with an unusual craniospinal cyst. The cyst extended anteriorly from the mesencephalon to the posterior wall of C6, causing severe compression of the brainstem and spinal cord. An endoscopic procedure was performed first to achieve a unique cranial fenestration, which is detailed in "Endoscopic Transfontanellar Approac
