Serum proteome changes following human immunodeficiency virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of viral RNA levels and CD4 cell count determinations are the most widely used laboratory assays employed in monitoring HIV patients. However, these tests are expensive, complex to perform, and require advanced laboratory infrastructure and highly skilled laboratory technicians. For these reasons, alternative ways to monitor the progression of HIV have been sought. The aim of this study was to compare the serum proteome of asymptomatic HIV-positive subjects to HIV-negative controls in order to identify novel protein changes that are induced in the human serum proteom

Huntington's disease and its therapeutic target genes: a global functional profile based on the HD Research Crossroads database.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of the polyglutamine repeat region in the huntingtin gene. Although the disease is triggered by the mutation of a single gene, intensive research has linked numerous other genes to its pathogenesis. To obtain a systematic overview of these genes, which may serve as therapeutic targets, CHDI Foundation has recently established the HD Research Crossroads database. With currently over 800 cataloged genes, this web-based resource constitutes the most extensive curation of genes relevant

Glaucoma-TrEl: A web-based interactive database to build evidence-based hypotheses on the role of trace elements in glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: Glaucoma is a chronic neurological disease that is associated with high intraocular pressure (IOP), causes gradual damage to retinal ganglion cells, and often culminates in vision loss. Recent research suggests that glaucoma is a complex multifactorial disease in which multiple interlinked genes and pathways play a role during onset and development. Also, differential availability of trace elements seems to play a role in glaucoma pathophysiology, although their mechanism of action is unknown. The aim of this work is to disseminate a web-based repository on interactions between trac

Molecular cloning and expression of the CRISP family of proteins in the boar.

The family of mammalian cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRISP) have been well characterized in the rat, mouse, and human. Here we report the molecular cloning and expression analysis of CRISP1, CRISP2, and CRISP3 in the boar. A partial sequence published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database was used to derive the full-length sequences for CRISP1 and CRISP2 using rapid amplification of cDNA ends. RT-PCR confirmed the expression of these mRNAs in the boar reproductive tract, and real time RT-PCR showed CRISP1 to be highly expressed throughout the epididymis, wit
