BACKGROUND: The global burden of mental health disorders is on the increase, which has contributed to discussions on mitigation strategies. While mental health discourses in respect of access to services are still ongoing, there is limited focus on vulnerable groups. Deaf persons are at risk of exclusion from health services due to their unique modes of communication. In order to advocate for the inclusion of deaf persons in mental health services, there is a need for a study eliciting information on their knowledge about mental health and accessibility to services.
METHOD: The study was guid

BACKGROUND: Single-sided deafness (SSD) has functional, psychological, and social consequences. Interventions for adults with SSD include hearing aids and auditory implants. Benefits and harms (outcome domains) of these interventions are until now reported inconsistently in clinical trials. Inconsistency in reporting outcome measures prevents meaningful comparisons or syntheses of trial results. The Core Rehabilitation Outcome Set for Single-Sided Deafness (CROSSSD) international initiative used structured communication techniques to achieve consensus among healthcare users and professionals w…

This scoping review examined which modifiable school and classroom factors dually supported mathematics and literacy development in deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Searches across ERIC, PsycINFO, and Scopus yielded 1,468 records, with 76 advancing to full-text screening. Of these, 35 were excluded due to not formally analyzing an environmental factor in relation to academic outcomes, revealing a notable gap in the reporting of measurable academic environmental factors across the field. Studies were also required to reflect the contemporary policy landscape following a 2010 shift in educatio

The role of fingerspelling or manual alphabet for reading among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals has been of great interest in research. What can decades of research on fingerspelling and reading among deaf individuals tell us about how fingerspelling aids deaf children's reading development? This scoping review was, therefore, undertaken to explore: (a) What is the relationship between fingerspelling and reading?, (b) In what ways do fingerspelling abilities promote reading skills?, and (c) What is known about using fingerspelling to teach reading? We identified 26 studies that were scree

BACKGROUND: Cultural and linguistic minorities are at a higher risk of poorer health, poorer health outcomes, and poorer quality of care, in part due to a lack of access to healthcare services. Inequities in access to healthcare services have been found in several Deaf populations and are associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to describe the breadth, scope, and nature of the literature on access to healthcare services for Deaf adults.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to Arksey and O'Malley. Ten scientific databases and grey l

Loss of function of the Pejvakin (Pjvk) gene has been associated with deafness induced by cellular stress. This has been postulated to occur due to defective peroxisome biogenesis. Here, we have characterized a novel mouse mutation lacking exon 3 of the Pjvk coding region. A mouse mutant carrying this mutation showed loss of hair cells associated with profound deafness and reduced outer hair cell function. A cell line carrying a deletion of Pjvk exon 3 revealed upregulation of the peroxisomal enzyme catalase upon oxidative stress. In order to further clarify the localization of Pjvk, we introd…

This study investigates the instructional practices and self-reported confidence of educators working with Deaf Multilingual Learners (DMLs), students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and come from homes where languages other than English or American Sign Language are used. Through a national web-based survey (Appendix A), data were collected from 89 current and former teachers of DMLs, capturing their demographic profiles, instructional strategies, and perceptions of their ability to support language development. Quantitative analyses, including descriptive statistics, t-tests, and correlation

The loss of a sensory modality triggers a phenomenon known as cross-modal plasticity, where areas of the brain responsible for the lost sensory modality are reorganized and repurposed to the benefit of the remaining modalities. After perinatal or congenital deafness, superior visual motion detection abilities have been psychophysically identified in both humans and cats, and this advantage has been causally demonstrated to be mediated by reorganized auditory cortex. In our study, we investigated visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to motion-onset stimuli of varying speeds in both hea…

This longitudinal study compares concept vocabulary knowledge of children with cochlear implants (n = 40) and children with hearing aids (n = 30) to that of their typical hearing peers (n = 40). Participants completed the Bracken Basic Concept Scale: Expressive (BBCS:E) at ages 4 and 6. Results revealed significant differences in concept vocabulary knowledge between both groups of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and the typical hearing group. Although all groups improved BBCS:E test performance between ages 4 and 6, the rate of improvement in children who are DHH did not trend t

The amount of time that a person with a cochlear implant experiences severe-to-profound hearing loss before implantation is thought to impact the underlying neural survival, health, and function of the auditory system, thus likely being closely related to post-implantation performance in auditory tasks. The reporting of this number in the research literature is ubiquitous. Although it is most commonly called "duration of deafness," our point of view is that the term is imprecise and the calculation of this number can be nontrivial, particularly for cases of adult onset of hearing loss. We prov…

Identifying specific learning disabilities in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students presents unique challenges due to various factors, including language access. This study utilized data from 810 students enrolled in schools for the deaf to examine the influence of gender, educational level, signing status, and vocabulary knowledge on specific learning disability identification or suspicion. The analysis revealed that male students, those in middle school, and nonnative signers are more likely to be suspected of or identified with specific learning disabilities. These findings emphasize the

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss impacts children's ability to learn language and motor skills. This study examined the postural control differences between children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and typical hearing (TH), who differ in language and literacy performance, across diverse balance tasks.
METHODS: Thirty-three children between the ages of 6 and 13 performed a battery of balance tasks evaluating postural control and mobility. Twenty-six children were classified as DHH, while seven were TH children. Children participated in an extended battery of language and literacy measures, no

This commentary highlights the importance of understanding mental health in deaf populations within the context of language development and access. The authors, who are all Deaf professionals, emphasize that language deprivation-not hearing loss directly-is a primary cause of many mental health issues in deaf communities, and advocate for the inclusion of deaf experts in research and publications concerning deaf individuals' mental health.

The support and therapy of hearing impaired patients has been successfully established for many years and follows different therapy concepts and principles depending on the therapy approach. In the future, care and therapy should continue to meet the growing quality requirements of the health care system and at the same time be oriented towards the individual needs of the patients. Before looking at future developments, it is helpful to reflect the current situation within the support and therapy of profoundly deaf patients. What challenges do therapists and educators face? What demands are pl

Within the Hungarian Deaf minority in Romania, a combination of two distinct types of culturally rooted minority identity occurs, which generates a minority situation at several levels. Our research conducted in a multicultural city of western Romania (Oradea) aimed to find out what are the prevailing means of linguistic communication within the local Deaf Association community; what are the linguistic communication opportunities available for ethnic Hungarian Deaf community members; and what resources the ethnic Hungarian Deaf employ to maintain and nurture their ethno-linguistic and national
