Orthostatic Hypotension and Urine Specific Gravity Among Collegiate Athletes.

Introduction The purpose of this study is to describe orthostatic blood pressure (BP) and urine specific gravity (USG) among collegiate athletes and then to examine if correlations between these variables could support use of orthostatic hypotension (OH) measures to screen for dehydration. Methods A prospective observational study was performed using a sample of convenience of collegiate athletes. Athlete's sex and sport were recorded in addition to height, weight, seated and standing BP and USG measured at a pre- and post-season encounter. An OH response was defined as either the systolic BP …

'Know-Can' gap: gap between knowledge and skills related to childhood diarrhoea and pneumonia among frontline workers in rural Uttar Pradesh, India.

OBJECTIVES: In India, frontline workers (FLWs) - public accredited social health activists (ASHAs) and private rural medical providers (RMPs) - are important for early detection and treatment of childhood diarrhoea and pneumonia. This cross-sectional study aims to measure knowledge and skills, and the gap between the two ('know-can' gap), regarding assessment of childhood diarrhoea with dehydration and pneumonia among FLWs, and to explore factors associated with them. METHODS: We surveyed 473 ASHAs and 447 RMPs in six districts of Uttar Pradesh. We assessed knowledge and skills using face-to-…

[The hormonal status and carbohydrate-energy metabolism of rats after the long-term action of low doses of ionizing radiation and heat].

Hormonal status (blood content of triiodothyronine, thyroxin, insulin, 11-hydroxycorticosteroids), dehydration in the Krebs cycle, and activity of the first enzyme in the pentose-phosphate cycle, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, in the brain and myocardium of white rats were studied at different time periods after separate and combined prolonged exposure to radiation in relatively small doses and heat. It was found that combination of ionizing radiation and heat led to hypofunction of the endocrine glands and inhibition of dehydration processes in the Krebs Cycle.

[Heterogeneity of bilateral adrenal hemorrhage in newborn infants].

Bilateral adrenal haemorrhage was diagnosed in 3 newborns. Clinical, biological and hormonal features were different in each case: abdominal mass in the first case; hyponatremic dehydration for the two others. This hyponatremic dehydration was related to temporary acute adrenal insufficiency for one newborn while association with medullary necrosis did not allow to assert hypoadrenalism for the other. These three cases emphasize: 1) variability of presentation at onset; 2) heterogeneousness of salt loose syndrome; 3) interest of systematic renal and adrenal exploration in adrenal haemorrhage.

When Phased without Water: Biophysics of Cellular Desiccation, from Biomolecules to Condensates.

The molecular machinery that enables life has evolved in water, yet many of the organisms around us are able to survive even extreme desiccation. Especially remarkable are single-cell and sedentary organisms that rely on specialized biomolecular machinery to survive in environments that are routinely subjected to a near-complete lack of water. In this review, we zoom in on the molecular level of what is happening in the cellular environment under water stress. We cover the various mechanisms by which biochemical components of the cell can dysfunction in dehydrated cells and detail the differen

Impact of early posthatch feeding on the immune system and selected hematological, biochemical, and hormonal parameters in broiler chickens.

Under commercial conditions, chicks hatch within a 24 to 48 h window, a period known as the hatching window. Subsequently, they undergo vari … hematocrit, and total serum protein values, suggesting that early access to water prevents initial dehydration in newborn chicks. Conversely, the ST group showed a stress reaction on D1 due to feed deprivation, leading to an almost 2-fold higher serum corticosterone concentration compared to the HC group. However, this increase did not result in a significan …

Mapping the Conformational Landscape of the Cold-Regulated Intrinsically Disordered Protein COR15A.

Cold regulated protein 15A (COR15A) is a late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) protein from Arabidopsis thaliana that is expressed in response to low temperatures and dehydration. Here, we use a combination of ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at elevated temperatures for enhanced sampling to explore the conformational landscape of COR15A. The IM-MS data display charge states from +5 to +12, and collision cross section (CCS) distributions indicative of two dominant coexisting conformational families centered on approximately 1200 and 1800 Å2, with subco…

Early severe weight loss in newborns after discharge from regular nurseries.

AIMS: To study incidence and risk factors of early neonatal dehydration in a Norwegian population based cohort. METHODS: Term neonates admitted to a paediatric department during 2002-2008 with a weight loss > or = 12% within three weeks of age were identified retrospectively through review of medical records. For each patient a sex-matched control group of two full-term infants was selected to assess risk factors for dehydration. RESULTS: A total of 38 of 37 321 infants (1.0 per thousand) were admitted at a median age of 6 (interquartile range 5-12) days, and the admission rate increased dur…

Cation transport and volume regulation in sickle red blood cells.

Cellular dehydration is one of several pathological features of the sickle cell. Cation depletion is quite severe in certain populations of sickle cells and contributes to the rheological dysfunction that is the root cause of vascular occlusion in this disease. The mechanism of dehydration of sickle cells in vivo has not been ascertained, but three transport pathways may play important roles in this process. These include the deoxygenation-induced pathway that permits passive K+ loss and entry of Na+ and Ca2+; the K(+)-Cl- cotransport pathway, activated by acidification or cell swelling; and t…

Fluid losses and hydration status of industrial workers under thermal stress working extended shifts.

AIMS: To assess whether workers under significant thermal stress necessarily dehydrated during their exposure and whether "involuntary dehydration" was inevitable, as supported by ISO 9866 and other authorities. Other objectives were to quantify sweat rates against recommended occupational limits, to develop a dehydration protocol to assist with managing heat exposures, and to understand the role of meal breaks on extended shifts in terms of fluid replacement. METHODS: A field investigation to examine the fluid consumption, sweat rates, and changes in the hydration state of industrial workers…

A fatal case of pure ethanol ingestion.

An adult male was found dead in a car with two empty bottles (500 ml x 2) labeled dehydrated ethanol (>99.5%, v/v). At autopsy, extensive pancreatic necrosis with severe hemorrhage was observed. High concentrations of ethanol were detected in blood (8.14 mg/ml), urine (8.12 mg/ml) and tissue specimens. The cause of death was determined to be an acute alcohol intoxication caused by ingesting approximately 1l dehydrated ethanol.
