BACKGROUND: Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor for the treatment of gastric acid-related disorders. In recent years, reports of dermatitis upon exposure to omeprazole during manufacture have been noted.
OBJECTIVE: To present diagnostic findings in workers who reported suspected hypersensitivity reactions resulting from occupational exposure to omeprazole.
METHODS: Ninety-six workers exposed to omeprazole during the manufacturing process underwent investigation by the AstraZeneca Occupational Health Centre (Södertälje, Sweden) for suspected allergy. All subjects underwent a lymphocyte tran

BACKGROUND: Classification of hand eczema has traditionally been based both on aetiology and clinical appearance. For 20% of cases, the aetiology is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To suggest a classification based on well-defined aetiology as well as on predefined clinical patterns and on the dynamics of hand eczema.
METHODS: Literature studies and discussions among members of the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group.
RESULTS: Criteria are given for the aetiological diagnoses of allergic contact dermatitis of the hands, irritant contact dermatitis of the hands, protein contact dermatitis of the hands, ato

BACKGROUND: Aliphatic polyisocyanates based on hexamethylene 1,6-diisocyanate (HDI) are components of lacquers, coatings, and spray paints. They are mainly composed of HDI trimers, but also contain larger oligomers, and minute amounts of HDI monomers (<1%). HDI trimers occur as biuret, isocyanurate and asymmetrical types.
OBJECTIVES: We report on 4 patients with allergic contact dermatitis/contact allergy resulting from HDI-based polyisocyanates in polyurethane paints.
METHODS: The patients were examined at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in 2000-2009. The first two patients wer

Isocyanates are widely used in the manufacturing of rigid and flexible foams, fibers, and coatings such as paints, varnishes, and elastomers but are rarely reported as contact sensitizers. The aliphatic diisocyanate dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (DMDI) is known to be a strong cutaneous sensitizer. We report a 27-year-old woman who developed a severe eczematous eruption on the arms, trunk, and abdomen within 2 weeks of employment at a company using the product Chem-Dec 808 isocyanate (containing 40-70% weight per weight DMDI). Patch testing was performed with the North American screenin

Contact dermatitis to isocyanates is a problem and is usually described within industrial settings. A patient who developed an acute allergic contact dermatitis using a dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (DMDI)-charged cartridge to create resin-coated '3D labels' within an office environment is described.

Rubber chemicals are among the most common occupational contact sensitizers. The most common rubber sensitizers are thiurams, thiazoles, carbamates and paraphenylenediamine derivatives. Here we present data on a less-well-known rubber chemical, N-(cyclohexylthio)phthalimide (CTP; CAS 17796-82-6). This chemical is currently the most widely used vulcanization retarder, but data on allergic contact dermatitis caused by CTP are lacking. We conducted a survey of 310 patients who had been patch tested with 30 rubber chemicals including CTP. 11 (3.5%) showed an allergic patch test reaction provoked b

The frequency of side-effects among dental patients is very low and is seen mostly as mild allergic reactions. Among the dental staff, contact allergic eczema is occasionally seen, induced by certain metals and various organic materials.

Seven workers using an epoxy adhesive cured with pyromellitic dianhydride were studied. Workers both mixed and used the adhesive. Each completed a questionnaire about previous respiratory symptoms, family or personal history of atopy, smoking history and symptoms using the adhesive. FEV1 was measured as a base-line and after working with the adhesive. Skin tests to common allergens were performed on all subjects. Two subjects who stated they wheezed with adhesive had falls in FEV1 of 15% and 18% from base-line. Totally symptom-free subjects had falls of less than 4% from base-line or a rise in

Contact-allergy eczemas due to dichloropropiophenone. Following an exposition to p-beta-dichloropropiophenone (DCP) of less than one year nine skilled chemical plant workers were taken ill with an eczema from contact allergy, particularly badly seizing their faces, necks, hands and forearms. In all workers in question has been recognized a job connected skin disease with bodily impairment of 20 to 30%. The test concentration of DCP was determined at 0.01% (testing vehicle: oil). Nonexposed persons showed response only at 0.5% DCP concentration (50 times higher percentage!) by falling sick of a

BACKGROUND: Frequent hand washing and prolonged mask use during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic may cause contact dermatitis in hospital staffs. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of contact dermatitis and its related factors among hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was conducted among the hospital personnel of Aligoudarz Shahid Valian Hospital, Lorestan, Iran, from March to June 2020. Sampling was performed using the complete enumeration method and 142 hospital staff (physicians, nurses, servic

INTRODUCTION: Contact dermatitis to cosmetics is a common problem in the general population, although its prevalence appears to be underestimated. We reviewed cases of allergic contact dermatitis to cosmetics diagnosed in our dermatology department over a 7-year period with a view to identifying the allergens responsible, the frequency of occurrence of these allergens, and the cosmetic products implicated.
METHODS: Using the database of the skin allergy department, we undertook a search of all cases of allergic contact dermatitis to cosmetics diagnosed in our department from January 2000 thro

The skin is very much exposed to food contact, both in the occupational and nonoccupational settings. Through such an exposure, adverse reactions can occur that may be irritant or immunologic. Both such types of reactions are particularly common in children with atopic dermatitis. Immunologic reactions can be immediate (immunoglobulin E-mediated) or delayed (cell-mediated), and can be localized or systemic. The latter can be life-threatening, even following trivial exposure. Clinical and experimental data are accumulating to indicate that epicutaneous exposure to food can induce de novo system

There is a worldwide increase in food and nutrition-related contact dermatitis, including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, systemic contact dermatitis, protein contact dermatitis, and photocontact dermatitis. A wide range of patients is affected by this condition, from those who consume certain foods as part of their diet to workers who handle food occupationally. Patch testing, analytical chemistry, and reporting may help in timely recognition of contact allergens. Elimination of exposure to the known food or supplement is imperative for treatment. Currently, more res
