Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shaft that mainly affects prepubescent children. Its clinical aspects range from a mild noninflammatory infection resembling seborrheic dermatitis to a highly inflammatory swelling reaction (kerion). We report the cases of 2 children who underwent surgical treatment of their kerions under general anesthesia. One lesion had been incised and the other excised. This inappropriate treatment made conservative treatment after surgery more difficult. We recommend that abscesslike lesions on the scalps of children be carefully investigated by s

Superficial mycotic infections such as seborrheic dermatitis, tinea pedis, tinea corporis, and onychomycosis are common in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In communities where HIV infections are frequent, some of these clinical presentations serve as markers of the stage of HIV infection. The diagnosis of superficial fungal infection in HIV-positive patients may be difficult because of atypical clinical manifestations. Therefore, to ensure a correct diagnosis, skin scrapings should be collected for potassium hydroxide preparations and cultures. Most forms of dermatop

A new method for quantitative culture of Pityrosporum yeasts, the 'tape-method', is presented. Samples for culture were taken from the skin by stripping with 1 cm2 of tape, whereafter the tapes were placed over a drop of sterile olive oil which was pipetted on a Sabouraud medium. Plates were incubated at 37 degrees C, and after 7 days the numbers of Pityrosporum colonies growing under the tapes were counted. With this method a difference in numbers of Pityrosporum colonies between seborrheic dermatitis and normal skin could be discerned. This difference was significant. It appeared that two su

Lipophilic Malassezia yeasts are an important part of the human resident skin flora, especially in seborrheic areas. Besides mutualistic interactions with the host they are also linked to diseases although the specific causes are not yet comprehensively understood. The amount of available lipids on the skin correlates with the Malassezia density and also with the occurrence of certain diseases like tinea versicolor. Here, the naturally produced lipids of the sebaceous glands play a role. Hardly studied thus far is the impact of topically applied lipids. Here, growth promotion as well as inhibi

BACKGROUND: Various sebum levels can be detected in dandruff-affected scalps. However, few studies have compared the biophysical characteristics of dandruff scalps categorized based on sebum levels.
AIMS: To investigate and compare the biophysical characteristics of dandruff-affected scalps categorized based on sebum levels.
METHODS: Fifty-four Korean women with dandruff and 30 healthy Korean women underwent physiological measurements, including evaluation of sebum and hydration levels, pH, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in the scalp. The levels of the biomarkers of interleukin-8 (IL-8

A 65-year-old man presented with an anomaly in his left ear. He had no complaints, but was ashamed of the lesion. On physical examination a pigmented, pedunculated, polypoid tumour of approximately 2 x 2.5 cm was seen, which filled the whole cavum conchae. After excision, histopathological examination showed a verruca seborrhoica.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malassezia yeasts are associated with a number of dermatologic and systemic diseases in humans and animals. Pityriasis versicolor is amongst these diseases and represents one of the most common human skin diseases. Beyond that, the role of Malassezia yeasts in the pathogenesis of other skin diseases such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and confluent and reticulate papillomatosis is discussed but remains less clear. Clear pathogenetic mechanisms of the above-mentioned diseases are not known so far. The review presents new findings on virulence factors of Malassezia yeasts

The relationship between sebum excretion rate (SER) and clinical improvement was investigated in 255 acne patients treated for 6 months with either oral erythromycin (1 g/day), minocycline (100 mg/day), oxytetracycline (1 g/day) or cotrimoxazole (400 mg/day); topical therapy was 5% benzoyl peroxide. In all but the cotrimoxazole treated group, there was a significant correlation between a high SER and reduced clinical response. This was particularly evident in those patients with an SER of greater than 2.5 micrograms/cm2/min. These patients showed only 17% improvement compared with 100% improve

Knowledge of the papulosquamous disorders is an important part of the diagnosis of skin diseases in general. Recognition of these commonly encountered cutaneous problems depends upon familiarity with the configuration and distribution of lesions on various parts of the body. Diagnostic tests (such as KOH to rule out tinea) should be performed, and when therapy does not seem to be successful, the diagnosis should be reconsidered with a biopsy and/or dermatologic consultation.
