Treatment of Bleeding Gastric Varices by Endoscopic Cyanoacrylate Injection: A Developing-country Perspective.

Introduction Gastric varices (GV) are less commonly seen but bleed more severely than esophageal varices (EV). Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), alcohol injection, and N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) are generally used for GV bleed management. NBCA is usually injected endoscopically and is known to be quite successful in the treatment of GV bleeding. This study was conducted with the objective of determining the outcomes in patients with GV treated with NBCA. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of medical records and reports of endoscopy performed between March 2015

Bt Brinjal in Bangladesh: The First Genetically Engineered Food Crop in a Developing Country.

Eggplant, or brinjal (Solanum melongena), is a popularly consumed vegetable grown throughout Asia that is prone to vicious and sustained attack by the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) (Leucinodes orbonalis) throughout the growing season. Yield losses in Bangladesh because of EFSB infestation have been reported as high as 86%. Farmers reduce crop losses by frequent applications of insecticide. To counter the EFSB pest, Bangladesh has developed and released four Bt brinjal varieties expressing Cry1Ac (Bt brinjal). Bangladesh is the first developing country to release a commercial geneticall

Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries in a Septuagenarian from the Developing Country of Pakistan.

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) is a rare congenital cardiac defect with atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial discordance which leads to heart failure and limits patients' lifespan. We report the case of a 70-year-old lady, from a poor province in Pakistan, who presented for the first time with palpitations and was diagnosed to have CCTGA. She had moderate pulmonic valve stenosis which was protective against heart failure. She had six children all born via spontaneous vertex delivery in her local village. This case exemplifies the fact that pulmonic stenos

Miliary tuberculosis and herpes pharyngitis after a trip to a developing country: dangers of biologics.

The use of biologic drugs has expanded since its introduction in the late 1990s. With growing medical use and newer biologic drugs in development, opportunistic infections like Mycobacterium tuberculosis remain important adverse effects. It carries major public health concerns, yet evidence-based clinical guidelines for more routine interval screening in patients taking immunosuppressants and exposed to tuberculosis (TB) are lacking. We illustrate a case of an elderly Indian-born man living in the USA with psoriatic arthritis who was on adalimumab for 10 years. He presented with disseminated T

Socioeconomic differences in childhood vaccination in developed countries: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

The reasons for vaccine hesitancy and its relation to individual socioeconomic status (SES) must be better understood. Areas covered: This review focused on developed countries with programs addressing major financial barriers to vaccination access. We systematically reviewed differences by SES in uptake of publicly funded childhood vaccines and in cognitive determinants (beliefs, attitudes) of parental decisions about vaccinating their children. Using the PRISMA statement to guide this review, we searched three electronic databases from January 2000 through April 2016. We retained 43 articles

Excessive screen viewing time by adolescents and body fatness in a developing country: Vietnam.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Screen time among youth has been increasingly recognized as a public health problem because of its link with obesity. This has been demonstrated in many studies conducted in developed countries but few studies have addressed the problem in developing countries, despite an increase literature about the emergence of obesity and a greater access to screen devices in a country like Vietnam. Our study aimed at assessing screen time and its relationship with BMI in adolescents of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study of 202…

Perinatal Outcome of Discordant Anomalous Twins: A Single-Center Experience in a Developing Country.

A dramatic increase in twin pregnancies has been observed in the past few decades, primarily related to assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and increased average maternal age during pregnancy. Multiple pregnancies, compared to singleton pregnancies, are associated with greater perinatal morbidity and mortality. The present study evaluated the perinatal outcomes of pregnancies with discordant anomalous twins in a tertiary maternity ward in a developing country. Data were retrospectively collected from the Instituto Fernandes Figueira/FIOCRUZ, Brazil between January 2002 and December 2014. We
