Attention and emotion in anosognosia: evidence of implicit awareness and repression?

Accounts of anosognosia for hemiplegia have long suggested some implicit knowledge of deficit, where lack of awareness is driven by the emotionally-aversive consequences of bringing deficit-related thoughts to consciousness. The present study investigates this issue using an attentional-capture paradigm, presenting words associated with hemiplegia-related deficit. As anticipated, non-anosognosics showed reduced latencies (i.e., facilitation) for emotionally threatening words. In striking contrast, anosognosics showed increased latencies (i.e., interference), a finding which supports the claim

Determinants of Intentional Pharmaceutical Poisoning: A Cross-Sectional Study From a Referral Poisoning Center in Iran.

Pharmaceutical poisoning is a major health concern and a leading method of intentional self-poisoning. In Iran, broad medication access has increased the burden, yet factors distinguishing intentional from accidental exposures remain underexplored. This study aimed to identify the determinants of intentional pharmaceutical poisoning using both traditional statistical methods and machine learning techniques. We conducted a cross-sectional study at a referral poisoning center in Isfahan, Iran, between January 2015 and December 2019. Medical records of patients admitted with pharmaceutical poison

Asymmetric hearing loss and the benefit of cochlear implantation regarding speech perception, tinnitus burden and psychological comorbidities: a prospective follow-up study.

OBJECTIVES: We determined the audiological outcome, the subjective and objective hearing quality in patients suffering from asymmetric hearing loss (AHL). Furthermore, we evaluated psychological comorbidities and tinnitus burden before and after cochlear implantation. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: 44 AHL patients were unilaterally implanted with a multichannel cochlear implant between 2011 and 2016. Speech discrimination (Freiburg Monosyllable Word Test, Oldenburg Sentence Test) was measured before, 6 and 12 months after implantation. Subjective hearing quality, health-rel

Navigating the Impact of Discrimination: Exploring the Experiences of Sex/Gender Minoritised Youth With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities often experience disability-related discrimination (ableism). Those with multiple minoritised identities, such as along the axes of disability and gender, arguably encounter more complex forms of discrimination; however, little is known about their experiences. Exploring the experiences of sex/gender minoritised youth with disabilities is important because they often face many challenges within education, health and social services, including discrimination, which could perpetuate inequalities. The purpose of this study was to understand the ways in which di

Locomotor and discriminative stimulus effects of fluorinated analogs of amphetamine and methamphetamine in mice and rats.

The prevalence of fluorinated amphetamine and methamphetamine analogs on the illicit market has continued to increase in the past decade. The perceived ability of these compounds to bypass legal regulation has resulted in an increasing popularity among drug users; however, their use produces significant adverse effects, including heart failure, cerebral hemorrhage, and death. This study aimed to investigate the effects of phenyl ring fluorination on the abuse potential of 5 synthetic stimulant compounds: 2- and 3-fluoroamphetamine (FA) and 2-, 3-, and 4-fluoromethamphetamine (FMA). The open-fi

Editorial: Immigration, Prenatal Stress, and Autistic Traits in Offspring: Examining the Role of Discrimination.

Inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus's poem, The New Colossus,1 helped shape the image of the United States as a country compassionate toward the needs of those who emigrated to its shores. The United States has more immigrants than any other country in the world, estimated at more than 40 million people.2 Roughly 18 million children in the United States have at least 1 immigrant parent.2 Most immigrants in the United States arrive with the hope of better educational and economic opportunities.3 Although moving to a new country can offer new opportunities, stability, and safety, th

Perceptual bias reveals slow-updating in autism and fast-forgetting in dyslexia.

Individuals with autism and individuals with dyslexia both show reduced use of previous sensory information (stimuli statistics) in perceptual tasks, even though these are very different neurodevelopmental disorders. To better understand how past sensory information influences the perceptual experience in these disorders, we first investigated the trial-by-trial performance of neurotypical participants in a serial discrimination task. Neurotypical participants overweighted recent stimuli, revealing fast updating of internal sensory models, which is adaptive in changing environments. They also

Auditory Frequency Representations in Human Somatosensory Cortex.

Recent studies have challenged the traditional notion of modality-dedicated cortical systems by showing that audition and touch evoke responses in the same sensory brain regions. While much of this work has focused on somatosensory responses in auditory regions, fewer studies have investigated sound responses and representations in somatosensory regions. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we measured BOLD signal changes in participants performing an auditory frequency discrimination task and characterized activation patterns related to stimulus frequency using both uni

The effect of stimulus duration on over-selectivity: Evidence for the role of within-compound associations.

The phenomenon whereby behavior becomes controlled by one aspect of the environment at the expense of other aspects of the environment (stimulus overselectivity) is widespread across many intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, the theoretical mechanisms underpinning overselectivity are not understood. Given similarities between overselectivity and overshadowing, exploring overselectivity using associative learning paradigms might allow better theoretical understanding of the phenomenon. Three experiments explored overselectivity using a simultaneous discrimination task with typi

Structural learning difficulties implicate altered hippocampal functioning in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Structural learning is fundamental to the formation of cognitive maps that are necessary for learning, memory, and spatial navigation. It also enables successful navigation of the social world, which is something that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) find particularly difficult. To master these situations, a person needs to bind pieces of information to one another and to consider the context in which experiences happen. Such binding is a capacity of the hippocampus. Although altered hippocampal function has for long been suspected to play a role in the etiology of ASD, the rele

HIV prevalence, risky behaviors, and discrimination experiences among transgender women in Cambodia: descriptive findings from a national integrated biological and behavioral survey.

BACKGROUND: Transgender people are disproportionately affected by HIV. Despite their high vulnerability to HIV, lack of adequate epidemiological and surveillance data related to this population in many countries prevents provision of appropriate services. This paper summarizes descriptive findings from a national integrated biological and behavioral survey and discusses policy implications of the findings on HIV prevention among transgender women in Cambodia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2015 and February 2016. Participants were recruited from 20 sites in

Mirrors are hard to break: A critical review and behavioral evidence on mirror-image processing in developmental dyslexia.

The relation between reversal errors (e.g., d for b, Я for R) and developmental dyslexia has been elusive. In this study, we investigated the roles of reading level, visual category, and orientation processing in this relation. Children with developmental dyslexia, chronological-age-matched controls, and reading-level-matched controls performed two "same-different" matching tasks on reversible (e.g., b) and nonreversible (e.g., e) letters and on geometric shapes (e.g., ). In the orientation-based task, orientation processing was explicitly required; in the shape-based task, orientation process

Neural Mechanisms of Post-error Adjustments of Decision Policy in Parietal Cortex.

Humans often slow down after mistakes (post-error slowing [PES]), but the neural mechanism and adaptive role of PES remain controversial. We studied changes in the neural mechanisms of decision making after errors in humans and monkeys that performed a motion direction discrimination task. We found that PES is mediated by two factors: a reduction in sensitivity to sensory information and an increase in the decision bound. Both effects are implemented through dynamic changes in the decision-making process. Neuronal responses in the monkey lateral intraparietal area revealed that bound changes a

Getting lost: Topographic skills in acquired and developmental prosopagnosia.

Previous studies report that acquired prosopagnosia is frequently associated with topographic disorientation. Whether this is associated with a specific anatomic subtype of prosopagnosia, how frequently it is seen with the developmental variant, and what specific topographic function is impaired to account for this problem are not known. We studied ten subjects with acquired prosopagnosia from either occipitotemporal or anterior temporal (AT) lesions and seven with developmental prosopagnosia. Subjects were given a battery of topographic tests, including house and scene recognition, the road m

Health workers' support for hepatitis C treatment uptake among clients with a history of injecting.

Hepatitis C virus is stigmatised because of its association with injecting drug use. Although treatment is available, uptake remains low, especially among people who inject drugs. Ninety health workers completed a survey assessing attitudes towards people who inject drugs and support for treatment for three client scenarios: one who stopped injecting, one on methadone, and one continuing to inject. Support for hepatitis C virus treatment was significantly higher, where the client was not injecting. Participants who showed more negative attitudes towards people who inject drugs were less suppor

Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome are impaired at explicit, but not implicit, discrimination of local forms embedded in global structures.

Individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) are impaired at exploring visual information in space; however, not much is known about visual form discrimination in the syndrome. Thirty-five individuals with 22q11.2DS and 41 controls completed a form discrimination task with global forms made up of local elements. Affected individuals demonstrated clear impairment in detecting local, but not global, differences. Nevertheless, 22q11.2DS participants easily discriminated the same local elements when they were displayed in isolation, and further use of a prime demonstrated preserved facil

Haptic perception of rod length when exploration is self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined.

Previous research has shown that when estimating accuracy of an object property like shape, haptic perception is better when exploration is active rather than passive. To further investigate this finding, participants estimated the length of a rod under differing exploration conditions: self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined. During the self-determined exploration, participants moved their end of the rod while the experimenter held the other end of the rod stationary. During the other-determined exploration, the participant held the rod while the experimenter moved the

Ironic Effects of Sexual Minority Group Membership: Are Lesbians Less Susceptible to Invoking Negative Female Stereotypes than Heterosexual Women?

The traditional stereotype of the typical woman has been described as "nice, but incompetent." However, such general gender stereotypes are applied to individual targets only under certain conditions: They are used to "fill in the blanks" (Heilman, 2012) if little personal information is provided about a target. "Typical lesbians" are regarded to have more typically masculine (agentic) characteristics such as task competence than the typical woman does. We thus hypothesized that if a woman displays behavior coinciding with the stereotype of the typical woman, it is more readily interpreted as
