A random telephone survey was conducted with 2,274 United States residents aged 14 to 21. Analyses were performed to assess the relationship between the specific gambling games played and the extent of problem gambling symptoms. The forms of gambling that were most associated with gambling problems were card games, casino gambling, "other" gambling on routine activities, and betting on games of skill such as basketball, pool, or golf. The form of gambling that made the largest contribution to gambling problems per 14 days of play was casino gambling. The hypothesis that rapid forms of gambling

BACKGROUND: Kleptomania has no definitive treatment. Mixed reports of benefit from openly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors led us to design a double-blind, placebo-controlled discontinuation trial of escitalopram.
METHOD: Between December 2002 and March 2005, we recruited 24 subjects aged >or=20 years with DSM-IV kleptomania of >or=1 year's duration. We excluded subjects with organic mental disorders, psychoses, substance or alcohol abuse, suicidal risk, bipolar I or II disorder, anorexia nervosa, or antisocial personality disorder and subjects requiring other psychotropic m

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness and tolerability of escitalopram was tested in the treatment of pathological gambling (PG).
METHOD: Nondepressed outpatients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition PG received flexibly dosed escitalopram in a prospective, 10-week, open-label trial after a 2-week observation period. Subjects were evaluated at baseline and at 2-week intervals for assessment of gambling behavior, mood symptoms, and adverse experiences. The primary efficacy measure was the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for PG. Secondary efficacy me

Pathological gambling (PG) is widely reported to have negative consequences on marriages, families, and children. Empirical evidence is only now accumulating but when put together with anecdotal information, the extent of these problems is clear. PG contributes to chaos and dysfunction within the family unit, disrupts marriages, leading to high rates of separation and divorce, and is associated with child abuse and neglect. Divorce rates are high, not surprising in light of reports that these marriages are often abusive. Research shows that the families of pathological gamblers are filled with

This article is about destructive aggressive behaviour which was and would be one of the most sensitive aspects of psychiatric care. We present an attempt to arrange different types of aggression along a continuum, from idea-motivated forms to forms with psychomotor character only, without participation of the will. The psychopharmacological agents with proven anti-aggressive efficacy are discussed and model clinical cases are presented.

The construction and initial psychometric evaluation of an interview assessment of clinically significant impulsivity (Lifetime History of Impulsive Behaviors; LHIB) is presented. Personality-disordered and control subjects participated by completing self-report measures of depression, anxiety and social desirability, along with self-report and laboratory analogue measures of impulsivity, and finally the LHIB. The LHIB demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Supporting concurrent construct validity, scores on the LHIB correlated with other self-report m

The acquisition and performance of a self-paced test of spatial divided attention linked with frontal cortex function were assessed in postpubertal (> 60 days) normal or gonadectomized male and female rats. Males were more accurate at detecting relatively brief visual stimuli than females, but this difference was eliminated by increasing the target stimulus duration, indicating an attentional basis for this effect. Premature errors were, however, greater in males than in females, suggesting greater impulsivity in males. Subsequent experiments in gonadectomized rats suggest that circulating hor

Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) and related disorders are common side effects of dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and are associated with negative effects on mental and physical health, quality of life and interpersonal relationships. Current management options are limited, as a reduction of dopaminergic medication often leads to worsening of motor symptoms or dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. The aim of this review was to investigate if ICDs improve, worsen, or remain stable after Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS). We reviewed retrospective, prospecti

BACKGROUND: Although dopamine replacement therapy is the main risk factor for the occurrence of Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD), non-pharmacological risk factors for have also been identified in that population and sleep disorders could be part of them. Our objective is to determine whether Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), that has been associated with more impulsive choices in general population regardless of dopaminergic therapy, could be associated with a specific psycho-behavioral profile and ICDs in PD.
METHODS: Eighty consecutive PD patients were screened for t

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICD), including pathological gambling, are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and tend to improve after subthalamic (STN) stimulation after a marked reduction of dopaminergic medication. In order to investigate the effect of STN stimulation on impulsive decision making, we used the Iowa Gambling task (IGT).
METHODS: We investigated IGT performance in 20 patients with PD before STN surgery with and without dopaminergic treatment and in 24 age-matched controls. All patients underwent an extensive neuropsychological interview screening for behavioural disor

OBJECTIVE: Impulse control disorders are commonly associated with dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). PD patients with impulse control disorders demonstrate enhanced dopamine release to conditioned cues and a gambling task on [(11)C]raclopride positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and enhanced ventral striatal activity to reward on functional MRI. We compared PD patients with impulse control disorders and age-matched and gender-matched controls without impulse control disorders using [(123)I]FP-CIT (2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)tropane) single photon emission computed to

INTRODUCTION: Unmedicated Parkinson's disease patients tend to be risk-averse while dopaminergic treatment causes a tendency to take risks. While dopamine agonists may result in clinically apparent impulse control disorders, treatment with levodopa also causes shift in behaviour associated with an enhanced response to rewards. Two important determinants in decision-making are how subjects perceive the magnitude and probability of outcomes. Our objective was to determine if patients with Parkinson's disease on or off levodopa showed differences in their perception of value when making decisions

Associations between personality traits, measured with the Karolinska Scales of Personality, the Impulsiveness subscale from the Impulsiveness, Venturesomeness and Empathy (IVE) Inventory, and with self-assessed personality traits and disorders (SCID-II Screen Questionnaire), and plasma insulin, glucagon and glucose, respectively, were explored in a sample of 101 psychiatric outpatients of both sexes. No relationships between the peptide hormones and personality measures were found. However, fasting glucose values, which were all essentially within the normal biological variation, were signifi

Problematic Internet use (PIU) by adolescents is of growing concern among both parents and pediatricians. Early controversies may have contributed to challenges in defining and measuring PIU. A variety of screening tools have evolved, aligned with different constructs of PIU, although a validated screening tool does exist. Current data and American Academy of Pediatrics policy reflect evidence-driven screening for PIU for all youth.

BACKGROUND: Discrete-Choice Experiments (DCEs) are used to assess the strength of preferences and value of interventions, but researchers using the method have been criticised for failing to either undertake or publish the rigorous research for selecting the necessary attributes and levels. The aim of this study was to elicit attributes to inform a DCE to assess societal and offenders' preferences for, and value of, treatment of impulsive-violent offenders. In doing so, this paper thoroughly describes the process and methods used in developing the DCE attributes and levels.
