Pool Chemical Injuries in Public and Residential Settings - United States, 2008-2017, and New York, 2018.

Pool chemicals are added to water in treated recreational water venues (e.g., pools, hot tubs/spas, and water playgrounds) primarily to protect public health. Pool chemicals inactivate pathogens (e.g., chlorine or bromine), optimize pH (e.g., muriatic acid), and increase water clarity, which helps prevent drowning by enabling detection of distressed swimmers underwater. However, pool chemicals can cause injuries if mishandled. To estimate the annual number of U.S. emergency department (ED) visits for pool chemical injuries, CDC analyzed 2008-2017 data from the National Electronic Injury Survei…

Infant injury death in Washington State, 1981 through 1990.

OBJECTIVE: To measure annual rates of infant injury death in Washington State and identify potential risk factors for infant injury death. METHODS: A population-based case-control study using a linked file of birth and death certificates for the years 1981 through 1990. RESULTS: The leading causes of infant injury death, per 100,000 live births, were intentional injury (9.1); suffocation, choking, or hanging (6.9); motor vehicle crashes (4.4); and drowning (3.2). Unintentional injury death rates fell steeply during the 1970s but remained steady during the 1980s. Infanticide rates rose during…

Effects of routine laboratory parameter variations on diatom preservation: Implications for the standardization of forensic diatom testing.

Forensic diatom testing remains controversial in drowning diagnosis and site inference, highlighting the need for standardized protocols. However, despite being involved in nearly all diatom testing methods, routine laboratory parameters have often been overlooked, and their effects on diatom preservation remain poorly investigated. This study systematically evaluated the effects of digestion parameters and washing procedure on diatom recovery and assemblage preservation, including digestion temperature and duration, centrifugation force and duration, washing frequency, and the residual pellet…

Dexamethasone treatment attenuates early seawater instillation-induced acute lung injury in rabbits.

There is very little evidence on the value of giving corticoids in cases of seawater drowning induced acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether dexamethasone treatment can attenuate seawater instillation-induced acute lung injury in rabbits. Seawater (4 ml/kg body weight) was instilled into the lower trachea of ventilated, anesthetized rabbits. Then these rabbits were assigned randomly 20 min later to receive intravenous injection of 1mg/kg body weight of dexamethasone (dissolving in 2 ml of normal saline) or 2 ml of no…
