OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess pre- and postoperative taste ability in patients undergoing middle ear surgery for otosclerosis or chronic otitis media. Olfactory function was also evaluated to rule out taste deficits due to concomitant nasal pathology.
METHODS: All patients underwent ear, nose, and throat examination, otomicroscopy, nasal endoscopy, anterior rhinomanometry, taste testing, and olfactory testing. Patients were evaluated at 1 to 5 days preoperatively (T0), and at 1 (T1), 6 (T6), and 12 (T12) months postoperatively.

OBJECTIVE: This case report aims to raise awareness amongst clinicians of ear presentation of cutaneous borrelia.
CASE REPORT: We report a recent case of borrelia lymphocytoma cutis benigna in a child presenting with unilateral earlobe swelling, who was otherwise well. A review of the English language literature, including management of the disease, is also presented.
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the fact that borrelia lymphocytoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of a persistent, unilateral, inflamed, swollen earlobe in an otherwise healthy child.

Neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear (NAME) is a rare tumor. We report a case of NAME, the clinical and pathologic findings of which illustrate the biologic behavior of adenomatous tumors of the middle ear and their relationship with rare carcinoid tumors of the middle ear. A 29-year-old man presented with a history of recurrent otitis media, right conductive hearing loss, and aural fullness. The tumor was removed in its entirety. Otolaryngologists should be familiar with this unusual but important entity.

The Koebner phenomenon originally described the appearance of psoriatic lesions in the uninvolved skin of patients with psoriasis as a consequence of trauma. We describe a case of concurrent lichen planus and sarcoidosis in the auditory canal, which represents an unusual manifestation of the Koebner phenomenon. This is the first case of concurrent lichen planus and sarcoidosis in the head and neck region and highlights the need for biopsy to allow accurate histopathological diagnosis and treatment.

Subjective noise in the ears arises in affection of different systems of a human body (cardiovascular, endocrine, CNS, etc.), but this noise may be also one of the earliest symptoms of different diseases of the ear accompanied, as a rule, with conductive or neurosensory hypoacusis. Phonometry is an indirect psychophysical method of measurement of subjective noise in the ear, and is one of the methods of differential diagnosis of this noise. Current methods of suppression of subjective noise in the ears in chronic neurosensory hypoacusis are sketched. A placebo effect was also achieved.

Successful microvascular ear replantation is well described, and often involves the use of arterial inflow anastomoses with leeches and systemic anticoagulation to augment outflow. Failed replantation attempts have also been published, with most of the failures attributed to venous drainage problems.
