Correlation of renal biomarkers, electrolyte imbalances and vitamin D levels in hypertensive subjects.

The mechanisms behind persistent high blood pressure and its effects on renal function and electrolyte balance are not yet fully understood. The present study aimed to identify electrolyte imbalances in hypertensive patients and to determine their association with renal function and vitamin D levels. For this purpose, 155 subjects were recruited for the study, including 83 hypertensive subjects and 72 healthy normotensive subjects matched for sex and age as controls. Demographic data were collected using a questionnaire, and anthropometric parameters were measured using standard procedures. So

The effect of clinically relevant changes in extracellular electrolyte concentrations on human atrial arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: Patients with recent-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently present with plasma electrolyte imbalances. Low plasma concentrations of potassium (hypokalaemia), and more recently low plasma concentrations of sodium (hyponatremia), have both been shown to contribute to a pro-arrhythmic substrate and may affect the success of restoring the normal rhythm (cardioversion). However, the mechanistic effects of these electrolyte alterations on atrial electrophysiology remain incompletely understood. This study aims to investigate how clinically relevant variations in extracellular electro

The Effects of Electrolytic Multivitamins and Neomycin on Antioxidant Capacity and Intestinal Damage in Transported Lambs.

Transport stress can cause damage to animals. In this experiment, 60 four-month-old lambs were randomly divided into three groups: CG (basal diet), EG (basal diet + 375 mg/d/lamb electrolytic multivitamin), and NG (basal diet + 200 mg/d/lamb neomycin). The results were as follows: during road transport, in all groups, the levels of SOD, T-AOC, and GSP-Px, and mRNA expressions of CAT, SOD, Nrf2, HO-1, and Bcl-2 in the jejunum and colon decreased (p < 0.01). However, mRNA expressions of Keap1, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-12, Bax, and Caspase3 in the jejunum and colon and the level of MDA increased (p < 0.01

Fluid and electrolyte pathophysiology in common febrile illness in children and the implications for clinical management.

Achieving fluid homeostasis and the management of fluid and electrolyte complications are constants in the treatment of seriously ill children worldwide. Consensus on the most appropriate fluid strategy for unwell children has been difficult to achieve and has evolved over the last two decades, most notably in high-income countries where adverse events relating to poor fluid management were identified more readily, and official robust inquiries were possible. However, this has not been the situation in many low-income settings where fluids that are prohibited from use in high-income countries

Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation in Tellurium Iodide Perovskites during Electrochemistry and Photoelectrochemistry.

Halide perovskites are promising photoelectrocatalytic materials. Their further development requires understanding of surface processes during electrochemistry. Thin films of tellurium-based vacancy-ordered perovskites with formula A2TeI6, A = Cs, methylammonium (MA), were deposited onto transparent conducting substrates using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition. Thin film stability as electrodes and photoelectrodes was tested in dichloromethane containing tetrabutylammonium PF6 (TBAPF6). Using photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase on t

Highly Reversible Zn Anodes through a Hydrophobic Interface Formed by Electrolyte Additive.

Hydrogen evolution reaction and dendrite growth seriously break the Zn plating/stripping process at the electrolyte/electrode interface, causing the instability of the Zn anode of aqueous zinc ion batteries. To improve the Zn anode stability and reversibility, we report a new electrolyte additive of aqueous electrolyte with the hydrophobic group. This interfacial hydrophobicity maximises the exclusion of free water from the Zn anode surface, which blocks water erosion and reduces interfacial side reactions. Thus, in an optimal 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte with 2 g·L-1 Tween-85, the hydrogen evolution

Molecular and physical technologies for monitoring fluid and electrolyte imbalance: A focus on cancer population.

Several clinical examinations have shown the essential impact of monitoring (de)hydration (fluid and electrolyte imbalance) in cancer patients. There are multiple risk factors associated with (de)hydration, including aging, excessive or lack of fluid consumption in sports, alcohol consumption, hot weather, diabetes insipidus, vomiting, diarrhea, cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, and use of diuretics. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance mainly involves alterations in the levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in extracellular fluids. Hyponatremia is a common condition among individuals

Electrolyte and Acid-Base Disorders Triggered by Aminoglycoside or Colistin Therapy: A Systematic Review.

Aminoglycoside or colistin therapy may alter the renal tubular function without decreasing the glomerular filtration rate. This association has never been extensively investigated. We conducted a systematic review of the literature following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses recommendations. Databases searched included United States National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, and Web of Science. For the final analysis, we evaluated 46 reports, published after 1960, describing 82 cases. A total of 286 electrolyte and acid-base disorders were reported. Hyp

The furosemide stress test, electrolyte response and Renal Index in critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common syndrome in critically ill patients. The diagnostic ability of traditional markers such as serum creatinine has recently been questioned, and the use of newer tests such as the furosemide stress test or the ultrasound assessment of renal resistive index have been proposed. Aim of the present study was to compare the response to a furosemide stress test, the Renal Index in mechanically ventilated patients with and without acute kidney injury at admission, and who did or did not develop AKI at day three, among those with normal renal function at

Topiramate-induced severe electrolyte abnormalities and hypernatremia leading to central pontine myelinolysis.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) develops due to acute hypernatremia from a normal baseline serum sodium in the setting of electrolyte abnormalities induced by topiramate use. Topiramate is a commonly used medication with several indications including migraines, myoclonic jerks and seizures. It has been reported to cause renal tubular acidosis and severe electrolyte abnormalities, which in turn predispose patients to neuropathology via renal concentration defects and osmotic shifts. Our patient is a 55-year-old woman with a history of multiple sclerosis and myoclonus on topiramate for severa

Resorcinol-Formaldehyde (RF) as a Novel Plasticizer for Starch-Based Solid Biopolymer Electrolyte.

A starch-resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF)-lithium triflate (LiTf) based biodegradable polymer electrolyte membrane was synthesized via the solution casting technique. The formation of RF crosslinks in the starch matrix was found to repress the starch's crystallinity as indicated by the XRD data. Incorporation of the RF plasticizer improved the conductivity greatly, with the highest room-temperature conductivity recorded being 4.29 × 10-4 S cm-1 achieved by the starch:LiTf:RF (20 wt.%:20 wt.%:60 wt.%) composition. The enhancement in ionic conductivity was an implication of the increase in the polym

Electrolyte Abnormalities in Patients Presenting With Ventricular Arrhythmia (from the LYTE-VT Study).

Electrolyte abnormalities are a known trigger for ventricular arrhythmia, and patients with heart disease on diuretic therapy may be at higher risk for electrolyte depletion. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of electrolyte depletion in patients presenting to the hospital with sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation (VT/VF) versus heart failure, and identify risk factors for electrolyte depletion. Consecutive admissions to a tertiary care hospital for VT/VF were identified between July 2016 and October 2018 using the electronic medical record and compared with an eq

Unusual presentation of pulmonary blastomycosis complicated by amphotericin-induced refractory electrolyte abnormalities.

Blastomyces dermatitidis is an endemic mold infection commonly seen in the midwestern of the USA and rarely affects pregnant women. The most common presentation is a pulmonary infection with variable degrees of severity. Of note, the clinical and radiographic findings of pulmonary blastomycosis can be mistaken for other pulmonary pathologies, thus earning the title of 'the great pretender'. The treatment of choice of infected pregnant patients is amphotericin B, which is known to produce electrolyte imbalances. However, it infrequently causes severe, prolonged and profound hypokalemia and hypo

Overlooking the obvious? Influence of electrolyte concentrations on seizure quality parameters in electroconvulsive therapy.

Clinical response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) depends on eliciting a generalized seizure. Though there are multiple ictal and other parameters to assess seizure quality, factors that influence these parameters have only been identified to a limited extend in antecedent studies (e.g., stimulus dosage, age). In the context of ECT, electrolyte concentrations have hardly been investigated so far-although hyponatremia is one well-known clinical factor to increase the risk of spontaneous seizures. In 31 patients with unipolar or bipolar depressive disorder, blood concentrations of sodium (Na)
