Islands of mature cartilage or bone were observed in 6 respectively 7 out of 1395 carotid bodies of rats studied. They were found only in spontaneously hypertensive rats of the Okamoto-Aoki stain and situated regularly at the margin of the carotid bodies. The bone islands were bigger than those of cartilage. The presence of such tissue components in the carotid bodies of rats is discussed in connection with the embryology of this peripheral arterial chemoreceptor, especially its mesodermal origin.

Taking cognizance of the embryology and newer diagnostic techniques, the transpalatal route is strongly recommended as the optimal surgical procedure for the management of choanal atresia. It should be performed as soon as general anesthesia can be safely administered. In selected instances, but particularly when a patient is at increased surgical risk, necessitating surgical brevity, the endonasal puncture technique should be considered as the initial procedure. Parents must be appraised of the potential for subsequent growth deficiencies, mental retardation, and crossbite.

The blood supply of the extrahepatic bile ducts was investigated in 15 human specimens. Human embryology explains the origin of the main blood supply in this area by the a. pancreaticoduodenalis posterior superior, the a. cystica and the a. hepatic propria. Other arteries are inconsistent and functionally unimportant. 2 or 3 marginal arteries are predominant in the arterial system surrounding the common bile duct. Surgery of the extrahepatic bile ducts should be performed with respect to this particular arterial network.

A list of syndromes that include foot deformities as part of the clinical presentation has been compiled and subdivided into a descriptive classification. A brief discussion is presented of the embryology of the foot as it pertains to and helps explain the etiology of these various anomalies. Variations in the treatment of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and ring constrictions are described. Finally, unique foot configurations are documented, which if seen should alert the clinician to consider the diagnosis of a specific syndrome.
