The role of exercise on long-term effects of alloxan administered in neonatal rats.

The present study was designed to analyse the effects of aerobic exercise on the metabolic effects of alloxan. Male Wistar newborn rats (2 days old) received alloxan (200 mg (kg body weight)(-1)) intraperitoneally (A rats). Vehicle-injected rats were used as controls (C rats). At 28 days old, some of the A rats were subjected to swimming for 1 h day(-1), 5 day week(-1) (AT rats). At 28, 60 and 90 days old the animals were subjected to glucose (GTTo) and insulin (ITTsc) tolerance tests. All the animals were then killed by decapitation for blood and tissue evaluations. On the 60th day, there was

Laryngeal paralysis: a study of 375 cases in a mixed-breed population of horses.

Referred cases (n = 375) of laryngeal paralysis (1985-1998) from a mixed-breed equine population included 351 (94%) cases of recurrent laryn … gns in RLN-affected horses included abnormal exercise-related respiratory sounds in 90% and reduced exercise tolerance in only 64%. However, many horses were referred before their exercise tolerance could be fully assessed. Forty percent of the RLN cases had intercurrent disorders, including 10% with additional upper respiratory and 7% with lower respiratory tract d …

The muscle specific MEF2Dα2 isoform promotes muscle ketolysis and running capacity in mice.

During prolonged starvation and exhaustive exercise, when there is low availability of carbohydrates, the liver breaks down fatty acids to generate ketone bodies, which are utilized by peripheral tissues as an alternative fuel source. The transcription factor MEF2D undergoes regulated alternative splicing in the postnatal period to produce a highly conserved, muscle specific MEF2Dα2 protein isoform. Here, we discover that compared to WT mice, MEF2Dα2 exon knockout (Eko) mice display reduced running capacity and muscle expression of all three ketolytic enzymes: BDH1, OXCT1, and ACAT1. MEF2Dα2 E

Nutritional state and lung disease in cystic fibrosis.

The life expectancy of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is largely dependent on the severity and progress of the pulmonary involvement ass … ved survival. Nutritional intervention may lead to an improvement in body weight, lung function and exercise tolerance, provided that the intervention is combined with exercise training in order to increase both respiratory and other muscle mass. These improvements can be preserved when patients have the stamina to continue with a high-energy, high-fat diet and dail …

A multi-parametric protocol to study exercise intolerance in McArdle's disease.

McArdle's disease is the most common metabolic myopathy of muscle carbohydrate metabolism, due to deficiency of myophosphorylase and alteration of glycogen breakdown in muscle. The clinical manifestations usually begin in young adulthood, with exercise intolerance, exercise-induced muscle cramps, pain and recurrent episodes of myoglobinuria. Many patients experience the second wind phenomenon, characterized by an improved tolerance for aerobic exercise approximately after eight minutes of motor activity, secondary to the increased availability of blood glucose and free fatty acids associated t

Long-Term Pulmonary Rehabilitation Enhances Cerebral Oxygenation, Functional Capacity, and Psychological Health in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung disease characterized by exertional dyspnea, desaturation, and exercise intolerance. Desaturation may contribute to cerebral hypoxia during exercise, and in turn, to exercise intolerance. Although pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has been shown to improve functional capacity and symptom management, it remains unclear whether these benefits are partially mediated by improved brain oxygenation. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether a 12-month PR program enhances cerebral oxygenation during exercise in patients with IPF. Secondary outco

Exercise training as prophylactic strategy in the management of neutropenia during chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy-induced immune-suppression is a common, but potential detrimental, adverse reaction in patients undergoing treatment for cancer and strategies with capacity to boost the immune cell populations are needed. Physical exercise training is a potent regulator of immune cell viability and function and may serve as a viable, non-pharmacological prophylactic strategy in addition to the current pharmacological management by, for example, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). Here, we review the mechanistic evidence linking exercise training to haematopoietic function and subsequen

Effects of resistive breathing on exercise capacity and diaphragm function in patients with ischaemic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Muscle weakness has been suggested to result from the deconditioning that accompanies decreased activity levels in chronic cardiopulmonary diseases. The benefits of standard exercise programmes on exercise capacity and muscular strength in disease and health are well documented and exercise capacity is a significant predictor of survival in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Selective respiratory muscle training has been shown to improve exercise tolerance in CHF and such observations have been cited to support the suggestion that respiratory muscle weakness contributes to …

Exercise and the dipeptidyl-peptidase IV inhibitor sitagliptin do not improve beta-cell function and glucose homeostasis in long-lasting type 1 diabetes-A randomised open-label study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence points to beta-cell regeneration in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (type 1 DM) at all stages of the disease. Exercise and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) independently improve beta-cell function and glucose homeostasis in animal studies and in clinical trials in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM). Whether a combination of both, exercise and GLP-1, induces a similar effect in individuals with long-lasting type 1 DM remains to be investigated. METHODS: In an open-label study, participants with long-standing type 1 DM were randomly as

[Evaluation of functional reserves of the oxygen transport system in cardiac surgery patients].

The informative value of determination of the restoration rate of spiroergometric parameters was examined in cardiosurgical patients who had undergone exercise testing. All the patients were divided into 3 homogeneous groups: (1) those without disorders; (2) those with moderate restoration; and (3) pronounced restoration. There was a moderate relationship between the restoration rate and the function of the oxygen transport system (OTS) and a high relationship between the rate and exercise tolerance in decompensated metabolic acidosis and left ventricular function. Analysis of the restoration …

Coronary bypass surgery after renal transplantation.

Aortocoronary bypass surgery was performed in three patients with incapacitating angina pectoris who had previously had successful renal transplantation. All patients had initial symptomatic improvement. Although two have mild angina pectoris, there is objective improvement in their exercise tolerance and in ischemic ST-T changes on treadmill exercise testing. One patient, who also had resection of a left ventricular aneurysm, remains free of angina but is symptomatic from congestive heart failure. There were no postoperative complications. To our knowledge, these three cases are the first in …

Carnosine augments the efficacy of pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD: insights from a preclinical model.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) improves exercise tolerance and dyspnoea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but does not address the elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Vascular dysfunction, an early CVD feature, is driven by oxidative stress-a shared pathogenic mechanism in COPD and CVD. Carnosine, a bioactive dipeptide with antioxidant and pH-buffering properties, may enhance muscle performance and protect against vascular injury. The present study sought to determine whether carnosine supplementation combined with exercise training could modify early CVD features in a pre…

Early exercise training feasibility after aortic valve repair: A multicentre prospective French survey on behalf of the Aortic Valve repair International Registry (AVIATOR).

BACKGROUND: Standardization of aortic valve repair by the external ring annuloplasty approach is an alternative to valve replacement to avoid prosthetic valve-related events. Although the benefit of exercise training to improve postoperative exercise tolerance has been demonstrated in many conditions after cardiac surgery, it has never been described after aortic valve repair. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility of an early exercise training programme after aortic valve repair. METHODS: Consecutive patients were prospectively included in 13 postoperative centres. Patients underwent an ex…

Duration of exercise as a key determinant of improvement in insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes patients.

Exercise duration and intensity are important parameters in exercise prescription and play a major role in improving insulin sensitivity (including transient and persistent improvement effects following cessation of training) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, whether duration or intensity of exercise is the more important factor has yet to be established. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether exercise prescriptions differing in duration and intensity differ in their ability to aid T2DM patients to retain insulin sensitivity following the conclusion of a period of tr
