INTRODUCTION: Facial trauma is a common injury in the urban setting. Many studies have been published on the epidemiology of facial fractures, but few of them conducted in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of patients treated for orbito-zygomatic fractures at our institution.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 141 patients with orbito-zygomatic complex fractures who underwent surgical treatment between May 2001 and May 2008.
RESULTS: The population studied consisted mostly of males (86.5% of patients), with a male:female ratio of 6.4:1. A ma

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the facial skeleton are relatively uncommon in children and adolescents, and only a few reports review a significant number of patients. The authors performed a retrospective study to analyze the different characteristics of such fractures in the pediatric population of Portugal.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the clinical records of a series of 912 patients 18 years of age or younger with facial fractures treated by the Departments of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery and of Maxillofacial Surgery, São João Hospital, in Porto, Portugal, between the years 1

UNLABELLED: A computerized data base identified 277 patients with violence-related ocular injuries seen during 16 months in an inner-city hospital. They constituted 35% of all patients with ocular injuries during the study period. Their demographics and ocular findings were analyzed. One hundred sixty-seven patients (60%) were black males, 60 (22%) were white males, and 50 (18%) were females (mean age, 29 years). The orbit was injured in 125, the retina/choroid and vitreous in 79, and the optic nerve in ten. Seventeen had penetrating ocular injuries. Nineteen eyes (7%) lost light perception. O

This issue of The American Journal of Otology includes the last of a series of articles on facial nerve disorders, which collectively are known as the "Facial Nerve Manual." In the early 1980s, Dr. Mark May chaired the AAO-HNS Facial Nerve Committee. One of the tasks he initiated was the creation of a Facial Nerve Manual, assigned to a small group of clinicians at the COSM Meeting in the spring of 1984. The purpose of this work was to disseminate practical information on the management of selected facial nerve problems, one of the primary charges of the Committee. Work began slowly, but surely

There are multiple hard- and soft-tissue considerations in facial surgery. The expertise of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon in treating patients with multiple facial injuries has shown time and time again that hard- and soft-tissue reconstruction can be performed either as simultaneous or as delayed procedures. The benefits of a total facial analysis approach to facial surgery are based upon aesthetic, functional, rejuvenative, and self-esteem issues. Proper diagnosis coupled with a comprehensive treatment plan utilizing a team approach provides for both simultaneous and delayed procedures …

OBJECTIVES: Facial nerve paralysis has functional, psychological and social consequences for patients. Traditionally, outcome measurements for facial nerve injuries have been clinician derived. Recent literature has shown that patient perspective is valuable and necessary in outcomes research. This study aimed to identify patient domains of concern and subsequently, develop a point-of-care questionnaire for clinical use.
DESIGN: This mixed-methods prospective study was completed in three phases. In Phase I, 15 facial nerve injury patients were interviewed individually. Interviews were digital

This study aims to identify the epidemiology and effects of facial fractures on return to play (RTP) in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the English Premier League (EPL). A total of 39 MLS players and 40 EPL players who sustained facial fractures from 2007 to 2019 were identified. Data on player demographics, the injury, and the impact of their injury on RTP were collected. Elbow-to-head was the most common mechanism of injury (20.3%). The most common fracture involved the nasal bone (48.3%). Most players (90%) RTP the same season. Players who sustained nasal fractures missed significantly fewer

The singular anatomical relationship of the base of the skull is responsible for the particular problems that may arise after injury. Extensive dural laceration and severe neurovascular damage may accompany skull base injuries. Trauma to the anterior skull base is frequently related to the paranasal sinuses, and trauma to the middle and the posterior skull base usually affects the petrous bone. Injury to the anterior fossa including the paranasal sinuses may produce CSF leakage, damage the olfactory nerves, optic nerves, and orbita contents. Fractures may affect the carotid canal, injure the i

Facial nerve monitoring has been increasingly routinely used as an intraoperative adjunctive method to help the head and neck surgeon to identify and minimize facial nerve injury during parotid surgery. The goals, current applications, recent technical advances, and limitations of the method are reviewed. A main focus of this chapter is a review of several prospective clinical trials that have been performed in recent years that have analyzed the benefit of electrophysiological nerve monitoring during parotid surgery. It has been demonstrated that nerve monitoring reduces the risk of early pos

The results of surgical treatment of 46 cases of facial nerve paralysis from 1974 to 1987 were reported. Among them, facial nerve decompression comprised 36 cases and facial nerve grafting 10 cases. The causes of facial nerve paralysis were head trauma in 13, surgical injury in 22, otitis media in 4, facial neurofibroma in 2 and Bell's palsy in 5. Thirty-six cases were followed up from 0.5 to 6.5 years. Twenty-five cases (69.5%) had totally recovered, 7 cases (19.4%) partially recovered and 4 cases (11.1%) had no recovered. The result of facial nerve decompression was better than that of facia
