Type VII collagen (Col7) is the major component of anchoring fibrils and very important for skin integrity. This is emphasized by the Col7 related skin blistering diseases dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) employs diverse virulence factors to evade immune defenses and persist intracellularly. Objective: To explore the pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of congenital factor Ⅶ (FⅦ) deficiency. Methods: Clinical data of 43 patients with congenital FⅦ deficiency diagnosed from April 1999 to September 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: There were 27 females and 16 males. Expression of either collagen VII or the noncollagenous (NC1) fragment derived from it has been suggested to be indispensable for the development of squamous-cell carcinomas (SCCs) in patients affected by recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). This view is challenged here by the observation that SCCs do develop in RDEB patients lacking expression of collagen VII altogether. The aggressive behavior of RDEB-associated SCCs remains unexplained.
