BACKGROUND: In June 2013, an alcohol-related traffic law took effect in Turkey. The law 6487 introduced administrative fines for not respecting blood alcohol concentration limits, health warning messages on alcohol containers (bottles, cans), and prohibited the sale of alcohol beverages in retail facilities between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.. This article examines how this law is associated with traffic fatality variation.
METHODS: Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute for the 2008-2019 period were analyzed. Outcomes were traffic fatality rates per 100,000 population and 10,000 motor vehicles.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most dreaded complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Gastrointestinal involvement is relatively uncommon and usually manifests as moderate and nonspecific indications. The present case report draws attention to the unusual presentation of SLE as LN with predominant gastrointestinal manifestations. Early detection and treatment of this condition improves the outcome of a potentially fatal ailment.

We present a case of a 10-year-old male with Staphylococcus aureus mitral endocarditis who was initially misdiagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with coronavirus disease 2019, with eventual fatal outcome due to brain hemorrhage after cardiac intervention. Our case differs from recent studies, in which microbleeds did not increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke or global mortality risk.

Herein, we present a case of systemic aspergillosis with a fatal outcome in a case with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated by ibrutinib. Aspergillosis was suspected clinically and proven microbiologically. Radiological findings were compatible with aspergillosis. We aim to review radiological findings in a case with DLBCL treated with ibrutinib, which is an important tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in lymphoid neoplasias.

We report the first documented case of hepatitis E virus-associated haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. This case emphasizes the fact that infectious agents other than those classically described should be taken into consideration as a potential trigger of virus-associated haemophagocytic syndrome. Prompt recognition is crucial to start early treatment of the underlying infection and possibly improve the outcome of this frequently fatal syndrome.

Kidney disease due to Aspergillus fumigatus is a rare finding in hyper-IgE syndrome. We report a patient with autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome, recurrent pneumonia, and acute necrosuppurative pyelonephritis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus with a fatal outcome. We emphasize the severity and the difficulties in the management of renal complications that could be limiting the survival of these patients.

We describe a 6-day-old male who developed cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia secondary to congenital adrenal hyperplasia and was successfully resuscitated. This case illustrates the importance of considering congenital adrenal hyperplasia as one of the causes of sudden cardiac arrest in a neonate. A literature review revealed only one similar case in a 3-month-old with a fatal outcome.

A 25-year-old male presented purulent meningitis associated with transverse myelitis. Spinal T2-weighted MRI showed a large spinal cord with an intramedullary high signal. Infection resolved with antibiotic therapy but spastic paraplegia persisted. Four months later, he developed a Guillain-Barré syndrome with clinical and biological signs of systemic lupus erythematosus. Final outcome was fatal despite corticosteroid and immunoglobulin treatment.

A 65-year-old patient undergoing total hip replacement under general anaesthesia suffered acute pulseless electrical activity with a fatal outcome. A kinin-mediated analphylactoid reaction following administration of a polygeline plasma expander (Haemaccel) was implicated by in vitro testing. This case report illustrates the diagnostic difficulties posed by non-histaminoid anaphylactoid reactions and the resistance to epinephrine of kinin-mediated hypotension.

A case with a fatal outcome caused by infection with Fuso-bacterium species was seen in a patient recently operated on for heavy snoring with uvulo-palato-pharyngoplasty (UPPP). The mechanism of infection is discussed. It is concluded that a febrile episode seen in patients less than 2 weeks postoperatively should be considered a serious symptom and be treated intensively after thorough examination.

The authors describe the clinical history of two adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia, who had severe neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. After chemotherapy in both patients had developed typhlitis with fatal outcome caused by sepsis. They discuss the etiopathogenesis and clinical features of necrotizing typhlitis as a complication of treated acute leukemia and point out the difficulty of the differential diagnosis and management.

A 62-year-old woman with cirrhosis of the liver was suspected of also having a primary liver-cell carcinoma. After puncture of a circumscribed liver process with a biopsy fine-needle there occurred massive bleeding which could not be surgically stopped, and the patient died. This was the first fatal outcome among 2760 fine-needle punctures in the author's personal series (0.036%).

Pneumaturia, an air-filled urinary bladder with or without passage of gas in the urine, is a rare phenomenon in the general population, but is more frequent in defined high-risk subgroups. Relevant symptomatology may be hardly noticeable for a relatively long period; however, the outcome may be serious and sometimes fatal. We present three such cases and discuss diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.

The clinical, histological, and ultrastructural features of a patient with a primary lymphoblastic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the skin are described. Four months after the onset of the disease the patient died with extracutaneous involvement of lymph nodes, spleen, liver, kidneys and lungs. The rapidly fatal outcome without the development of leukaemia or involvement of the bone marrow and the mediastinum is uncommon.

A 55-year-old white woman received chemotherapy with DTIC after surgery for malignant melanoma (stage I, SSM IV, depth of invasion 12 mm). She died suddenly during the second treatment cycle. Autopsy revealed massive necrosis of the liver and thrombosis of the hepatic veins. The cause of the fatal outcome is attributed to the adverse toxic effects of DTIC.

The authors report a case of constrictive pericarditis complicating an apparently stable sero-negative rhumatoïd arthritis, a rarely described pathological association. The patient had a serious polyserositis due to an extremely marked and inflammatory pericardial constriction. The rhumatoïd origin was confirmed by pericardial effusion, histological and immunofluorescent studies. The inflammatory pericardial process rendered pericardiectomy virtually impossible and resulted in a fatal outcome.

Amoxicillin is one of the most commonly used antibiotics to treat pneumococcal infections. We analyzed the epidemiology and clinical impact of amoxicillin non-susceptibility in invasive pneumococcal pneumonia. This is an observational study based on prospectively collected data at Bellvitge University Hospital (Barcelona, Spain) from 1994 to 2020.
