Monitoring Doppler patterns and clinical parameters may predict feeding tolerance in intrauterine growth-restricted infants.

AIM: To detect predictors of feeding tolerance in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) infants with or without brain-sparing effect (BS). METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in 70 IUGR infants (35 IUGR with BS, matched for gestational age with 35 IUGR infants with no BS). BS was classified as pulsatility index (PI) ratio [umbilical artery (UAPI) to middle cerebral artery (MCAPI) (U/C ratio)] > 1. Clinical parameters of feeding tolerance - days to achieve full enteral feeding (FEF) - were compared between the IUGR with BS and IUGR without BS infants. Age at the start of minimal entera

Pancreatic enzyme supplementation for patients receiving enteral feeds.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic enzyme supplementation is an important part of management for a number of gastrointestinal conditions. For patients who are unable to swallow pancreatin capsules or granules, enteral feeding tubes can be used to administer the pancreatic enzyme. This presents challenges given the unique format of the pancreatic enzyme supplements, with common problems including tube blockage and loss of the enzyme's effect. METHODS AND RESULTS: A novel technique is described for administration of pancreatic enzyme via feeding tubes. For gastrically placed tubes, this involves opening th

Mothers' representations of relationships with their children: relations with mother characteristics and feeding sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine parenting representations and feeding interactions of mothers and their children with cerebral palsy (CP) and the extent to which mothers' representations predict their feeding behavior beyond other mother and child characteristics. METHODS: Fifty-eight mothers of children with mild to severe CP ages 16 to 52 months were interviewed with an adapted form of the Parent Development Interview (PDI). Correlation and regression analyses examined relations between representations (compliance with parental requests, achievement, secure base, enmeshment, worry about the child's f

Button versus buttonless castings for removable partial denture frameworks.

Casting removable partial dentures (RPDs) without completely filling the sprue channels and generating casting buttons would result in saving metal and making more defect-free castings. This investigation tested whether a complete and sound RPD casting can be obtained when a minimal amount of metal is used. A factorial experimental design, three spruing methods, two metal feeding directions, and two different weights of metal were used to cast 60 Kennedy class II, modification 1 RPDs. The metal used to cast each framework was either enough to result in a full button or in no button. Visual and

Role of parental characteristics and feeding practices in childhood obesity: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity represents a growing global public health challenge, and parental characteristics together with family feeding practices are increasingly recognised as important determinants of children's dietary behaviours and weight status. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between parental characteristics, feeding practices and the risk of obesity among school-aged children. METHODS: A total of 446 parent-child dyads, consisting of primary school-aged children and one of their parents, were included in the study. In this cross-sectional study, parental f

Caregiver Weight Misperception and Feeding Practices in U.S. Preschool-Aged Children: A Theory-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Caregiver perception of child weight may be a cognitive antecedent of feeding practices, yet evidence linking misperception to feeding practices remains inconsistent. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory, this study examined whether caregiver weight perception (underestimation, overestimation, or accurate) is independently associated with feeding practices among caregivers of U.S. preschool-aged children. METHODS: Primary caregivers of children aged 3-5 years (analytic n = 139) were recruited across the Midwestern United States from April 2022 to March 2023. Weight percept

Common food allergen education and exposure in infants with feeding tubes: A single-center retrospective study highlighting an educational gap.

BACKGROUND: The timing of allergenic food introduction is a recognized modifiable risk factor for the development of IgE-mediated food allergy. There is a paucity of data on the implementation of early introduction of common food allergens in infants fed via feeding tubes. We aimed to compare the characteristics and common food allergen exposure of patients with feeding tubes who received education during their gastroenterology visit versus those who did not. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients aged 4 to 24 months with a feeding tube between September 2020 and July

Nutritional Status and Nutrient Intake of Children With Feeding Disorders in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND Proper feeding is a priority in early childhood, specifically below the age of 3 years. Eating disorders are increasingly common in pediatric populations. Inadequate energy and nutrient intake affects children's health and development. Prolonged feeding problems can lead to nutrient deficiencies. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included children under 3 years of age with feeding disorders and their families. A 3-day food diary and a questionnaire were used for data collection. Participants (n=40) were divided by age into 2 groups: 6 months (from infant feeding) to 1 year, and 1 year

Feeding following cleft palate surgery: a prospective randomized clinical trial comparing suprazygomatic maxillary nerve block and greater palatine nerve block.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of cleft-lip and palate surgery, both suprazygomatic maxillary nerve blocks (SZMNB) and greater palatine nerve blocks (GPNB) have been shown to provide improved postoperative pain relief. In this context, both pain relief and early postoperative feeding are of great importance. However, these two techniques have so far not been properly compared with regard to these characteristics. METHODS: Children 1-10 years of age undergoing palate surgery were randomized to either SZMNB or GPNB. Primary aim was early (0-24 hour) postoperative feeding (%) in relation to full n

A mechanical perspective on suction feeding in fishes.

Suction feeding in fish has long fascinated experimental biologists because of its complex motions, intricate anatomy and vast distribution across thousands of species and nearly every aquatic habitat. Suction feeding poses three main mechanical challenges for fish. First, how do shortening muscles create three-dimensional (3D) expansion of the mouth cavity to suck in water? Second, how do muscles produce the substantial power required for fast and forceful expansion to accelerate food and water into the mouth? Third, how is water moved through the mouth so that food can be deposited in the oe

Caregiver burden related to feeding process in Alzheimer's disease.

UNLABELLED: Difficulties in the feeding process, such as aversive feeding behaviors and dysphagia, are common in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and can often overload their caregivers. Although dysphagia is already established as a factor contributing to caregiver burden, the impact of aversive behaviors is less studied. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the relationship between the feeding process in individuals with AD and their caregiver's burden. METHODS: Dyads of individuals with AD and their caregivers were recruited for a cross-sectional study. The Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia

Who tolerates early enteral feeding after colorectal surgery?

BACKGROUND: Early enteral feeding and avoidance of routine nasogastric tube (NGT) placement have become standard care following colorectal surgery. However, some patients require NGT decompression post-operatively for vomiting or distension. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients undergoing elective intra-abdominal colorectal surgery at University Hospital, Geelong, from 2014 to 2018. Failure of early feeding was defined by the placement of an NGT post-operatively, beyond the day of surgery. RESULTS: A total of 754 patients were identified. Of these, 28 were excluded

Infant Feeding and Weight Gain: Separating Breast Milk From Breastfeeding and Formula From Food.

OBJECTIVES: Studies addressing breastfeeding and obesity rarely document the method of breast milk feeding, type of supplementation, or feeding in hospital. We investigated these practices in the CHILD birth cohort. METHODS: Feeding was reported by mothers and documented from hospital records. Weight and BMI z scores (BMIzs) were measured at 12 months. Analyses controlled for maternal BMI and other confounders. RESULTS: Among 2553 mother-infant dyads, 97% initiated breastfeeding, and the median breastfeeding duration was 11.0 months. Most infants (74%) received solids before 6 months. Among

Extralobar pulmonary sequestration in neonates: The natural course and predictive factors associated with spontaneous regression.

PURPOSE: To describe the natural course of extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS) and identify factors associated with spontaneous regression of EPS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively searched for patients diagnosed with EPS on initial contrast CT scan within 1 month after birth and had a follow-up CT scan without treatment. Spontaneous regression of EPS was assessed by percentage decrease in volume (PDV) and percentage decrease in sum of the diameter of systemic feeding arteries (PDD) by comparing initial and follow-up CT scans. Clinical and CT features were analysed to determine f

General Practitioners involvement in enteral tube feeding at home: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Complex medical treatment is moving from hospital to primary care and General Practitioners (GPs) are increasingly asked to undertake new roles. There are now an estimated 19,500 patients being fed in the UK in the community on enteral tube feeding using a variety of different feeding tubes (Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), Jejunostomy, or nasogastric (NG). The majority of patients are over the age of 65 years when they had artificial feeding initiated and mainly because of dysphagia. The aim of this study was to explore GPs knowledge, attitudes and skills relating to ent
