Epigenetic Reprogramming in Mice and Humans: From Fertilization to Primordial Germ Cell Development.

In this review, advances in the understanding of epigenetic reprogramming from fertilization to the development of primordial germline cells in a mouse and human embryo are discussed. To gain insights into the molecular underpinnings of various diseases, it is essential to comprehend the intricate interplay between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors during cellular reprogramming and embryonic differentiation. An increasing range of diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders, have been linked to alterations in DNA methylation and histone modifications. Global epigenetic

Hysterosalpingography findings of female partners of infertile couple attending fertility clinic at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an outpatient fluoroscopic method for the evaluation of the uterine cavity, fallopian tubes, and the surrounding peritoneal cavity. Female fertility depends greatly on normal female reproductive organs; hence tubal abnormalities may contribute significantly to female infertility. HSG is an invaluable screening tool in the evaluation of women with suspected tubal factor infertility. This study aims to review the HSG findings of women who sought fertility treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos (LUTH). METHODS: this was a retrospec

Can simple trachelectomy or conization show comparable survival rate compared with radical trachelectomy in IA1 cervical cancer patients with lymphovascular space invasion who wish to save fertility? A systematic review and guideline recommendation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the published literatures on the effect of less radical fertility-preserving procedures, such as conization or simple trachelectomy, on oncological outcomes in IA1 cervical cancer patients with lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) through a systematic-review. METHODS: The EMBASE and MEDLINE databases and Cochrane Library were searched for published studies reporting the oncological outcomes of conization/simple trachelectomy in these patients, through April 2017. The endpoints were recurrence and mortality rates. Data were presented as per the Meta-analys

A novel system for on-farm fertility monitoring based on milk progesterone.

Timely identification of a cow's reproduction status is essential to minimize fertility-related losses on dairy farms. This includes optimal estrus detection, pregnancy diagnosis, and the timely recognition of early embryonic death and ovarian problems. On-farm milk progesterone (P4) analysis can indicate all of these fertility events simultaneously. However, milk P4 measurements are subject to a large variability both in terms of measurement errors and absolute values between cycles. The objective of this paper is to present a newly developed methodology for detecting luteolysis preceding est

Longitudinal patterns of unmet need for contraception among women living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy in South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Fertility intentions and contraceptive use are often not assessed in the context of clinical HIV care, representing a possible programming gap if women's family planning needs change over time. We aimed to identify longitudinal patterns of unmet need for contraception over a 12-month period among women living with HIV taking antiretroviral therapy (ART). STUDY DESIGN: 850 non-pregnant, HIV-positive women aged 18-35 on or initiating ART in Johannesburg, South Africa, were enrolled into a prospective cohort study in 2009-2010. Fertility intentions and contraceptive use were assessed

Impact of human interventions on nutrient biogeochemistry in the Pamba River, Kerala, India.

Anthropogenic inputs nowadays are the major source of nutrients to the coastal area. While a wealth of data exists from high latitude regions, little is known on the amount and composition of nutrient fluxes from densely populated tropical catchments. The South Indian Pamba River is a prime example in this respect because of its manifold human interventions such as the Sabarimala pilgrimage, the largest pilgrim centre in the world and agricultural practices. In order (i) to identify direct cause-effect relationships, (ii) to quantify land use specific nutrient inputs and (iii) to assess the re

Application of a hyaluronic acid gel after intrauterine surgery may improve spontaneous fertility: a randomized controlled trial in New Zealand White rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) are the most common complication after hysteroscopy in patients of reproductive age. Intra-abdominal anti-adhesion gel reduces the incidence of adhesions, but effects on fertility after uterine surgery are not known. The objective of our work was to evaluate the effect of intrauterine anti-adhesion gel on spontaneous fertility after repeated intrauterine surgery with induced experimental synechiae in the rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty New Zealand White rabbits underwent a double uterine curettage 10 days apart and were randomized into two

Effects of dietary fumonisin B1 on the onset of puberty, semen quality, fertility rates and testicular morphology in male rabbits.

The influences of dietary fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)), a metabolite of Fusarium verticillioides, on the onset of puberty, semen quality, fertility rates and testicular morphology in male rabbits (bucks) were studied. Forty male rabbits were randomly assigned and fed four diets containing 0.13, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mg FB(1)/kg, constituting diets 1 (control), 2, 3 and 4 respectively, for a period of 175 days in a completely randomized design. During the last week of the feeding trial, two untreated female rabbits were mated to each of the four treated bucks per treatment to assess the fertility rate of

Infertile boars with knobbed and immotile short-tail sperm defects in the Finnish Yorkshire breed.

In the period 1996-2006 two specific sperm defects, the knobbed acrosome (KA) defect and the immotile short-tail sperm (ISTS) defect, showed a strong negative association with fertility in Finnish breeding boars. In this study, we examined the incidence of these two sperm defects in two pig breeds, their effects on fertility and their associations with sperm morphology and testicular histology. Semen samples from 2048 (1097 Yorkshire, 951 Landrace) boars were collected. None of the Landrace boars revealed either the KA defect or the ISTS defect. Of the Yorkshire boars, 0.8% were afflicted with

Premature ovarian failure associated with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome: pathophysiological mechanisms and future fertility.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS) are a series of disorders characterized by autoimmunity against two or more endocrine organs. Premature ovarian failure (POF) may also have an autoimmune origin and, when accompanied by other autoimmune endocrinopathies, may be part of the APSs. Onset of autoimmune ovarian failure usually occurs in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, and as a result, fertility may be severely compromised. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old women with secondary amenorrhea, Addison's disease, and autoimmune hypothyroidism requested infertility evaluation. Examinati

Nutritional Regulation of Embryonic Survival, Growth, and Development.

Maternal nutritional status affects conceptus development and, therefore, embryonic survival, growth, and development. These effects are apparent very early in pregnancy, which is when most embryonic losses occur. Maternal nutritional status has been shown to affect conceptus growth and gene expression throughout the periconceptual period of pregnancy (the period immediately before and after conception). Thus, the periconceptual period may be an important "window" during which the structure and function of the fetus and the placenta are "programmed" by stressors such as maternal malnutrition,

The early lethality of autosomal monosomy in the mouse.

Using male mice doubly heterozygous for pairs of Robertsonian translocation chromosomes that have one arm in common, mouse embryos monosomic for 11 of the 19 autosomes have been generated. All of these monosomies result in death prior to or during the implantation period, with only rare survivors being detected 6 days after fertilization. For some of the monosomies the onset of lethality can be detected during the third or fourth day of development, but others do not begin to die until sometime after the late blastocyst stage on day 4. Retardation of development, as revealed by decreased cell

Available data sources to estimate adolescent birthrates in Mexico: a users' guide.

BACKGROUND: Research, policymakers, and advocacy groups rely on valid estimates of adolescent births to inform their work. Estimates of births among very young adolescents (10-14 years old) are especially lacking. METHODS: We compared adolescent fertility rates in Mexico across the census, population-based surveys, civil registration, and birth certificates. We calculate live birth rates among very young adolescents (VYA; 10-14 and 12-14) and older adolescents (15-19) in Mexico, at national and state levels, and by year (2008-2019). We compare estimates with official reconciled data from the

Fertility-sparing treatment for atypical polypoid adenomyoma.

INTRODUCTION: Atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) has classically been described as a benign lesion of the endometrium; however, recent studies have identified risk of progression to malignant pathology. Standard treatment includes hysterectomy but since many patients with APA are young and desire fertility, uterine-sparing options have been explored. In this study, we examine long-term outcomes of fertility-sparing treatment, including hysteroscopic resection and progesterone therapy, on progression to hyperplasia or endometrial carcinoma. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of
