Fetal alcohol syndrome disorders: experience on the field. The Lazio study preliminary report.

In Italy, little is known about the problems related to alcohol drinking during pregnancy. In this paper, the Italian literature about this subject is briefly reviewed. This first Italian experience of a field study, aimed to the assessment of the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in an area in the Rome province (Lazio region) is reported. This in-field study was performed in the school years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 in cooperation with American researchers, most from University of New Mexico (Albuquerque), and Italian researchers from Univer…

Fetal alcohol syndrome--South Africa, 2001.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities. The FAS phenotype is characterized by a combination of facial dysmorphic features, growth retardation, and central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. State-based estimates of the prevalence of FAS in the United States vary from 0.3 to 1.5 per 1,000 live-born infants. Recently, the highest prevalence of FAS worldwide was reported among first-grade children in a wine-growing region in the Western Cape province of South Afri

Modifications of thalamo-cortical circuitry in rats prenatally exposed to ethanol.

The present study aimed to investigate the organization of thalamo-cortical connections in adult rats exposed to ethanol during the last week of foetal life. Animals underwent thalamic injections of lectin-conjugated HRP. Results demonstrate that the thalamic-recipient zone of sensorimotor cortex is significantly thinner in ethanol-exposed than in control cases. Animals exposed to ethanol also display aberrant thalamo-cortical terminations in layer 5a. Neurones of origin of cortico-thalamic projections are normally located in layers 5 and 6; they appear quantitatively comparable in control and

A dangerous lack of understanding.

In the past, inadequate information on the effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the fetus meant that not enough emphasis was placed on this topic in prenatal and preconceptual teaching. Today, fetal alcohol syndrome is a widely accepted diagnosis in the medical community. Health professionals now stress the importance of abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Unfortunately, a surprising number of adults have but a meagre knowledge of the risks. This dangerous lack of understanding represents a failure in health promotion.

[Fetal alcohol syndrome].

Ethanol teratogenicity manifests itself in the form of the foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This syndrome is characterised by growth delay, impairment of the central nervous system, and various facial dysmorphisms. We report the case of a 19 month-old boy affected by FAS. In addition to the three common features of FAS, this patient disclosed organic (digestive and cardiac) malformations and cellular chemotaxis deficiency. We have reviewed the literature to provide an update on the clinical signs of FAS. The abnormalities provoked by foetal exposure to ethanol can be very varied, none of them be

Fetal alcohol syndrome.

Children of alcoholic mothers are at increased risk for various social and metabolic problems. They are also likely to develop fetal alcohol syndrome: a variable pattern of growth retardation, mental retardation, neurologic dysfunction and congenital dysmorphology. Linear growth is retarded more than weight. Craniofacial anomalies, including microcephaly, are most common. Malformations appear to be related to heavy ethanol intake during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Comparing diagnostic outcomes of children with fetal alcohol syndrome in South Africa with diagnostic outcomes when using the updated Institute of Medicine diagnostic guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: During fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevalence studies in South Africa, cases of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) were identified that presented differently from the 2016 Hoyme et al. modified Institute of Medicine (IOM) criteria. We compared diagnostic outcomes of children diagnosed with FAS using a combination of the 2005 Hoyme et al. criteria and the "gestalt method" in South Africa to the diagnosis they would have received using the latest Hoyme et al. criteria. The frequency with which dysmorphic features presented was compared to the frequency with which they were rep

Impact of alcohol exposure on neural development and network formation in human cortical organoids.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the foremost preventable etiology of intellectual disability and leads to a collection of diagnoses known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Alcohol (EtOH) impacts diverse neural cell types and activity, but the precise functional pathophysiological effects on the human fetal cerebral cortex are unclear. Here, we used human cortical organoids to study the effects of EtOH on neurogenesis and validated our findings in primary human fetal neurons. EtOH exposure produced temporally dependent cellular effects on proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis. In addi…

Impairing the impairment argument.

Blackshaw and Hendricks have recently developed and defended the impairment argument against abortion, arguing that the immorality of giving a child fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) provides us with reason to believe that abortion is immoral. In this paper, we forward two criticisms of the impairment argument. First, we highlight that, as it currently stands, the argument is very weak and accomplishes very little. Second, we argue that Blackshaw and Hendricks are fundamentally mistaken about what makes giving a child FAS immoral. Once we acknowledge this, it is clear that our intuitions about givi

Modeling the enigma of complex disease etiology.

BACKGROUND: Complex diseases often present as a diagnosis riddle, further complicated by the combination of multiple phenotypes and diseases as features of other diseases. With the aim of enhancing the determination of key etiological factors, we developed and tested a complex disease model that encompasses diverse factors that in combination result in complex diseases. This model was developed to address the challenges of classifying complex diseases given the evolving nature of understanding of disease and interaction and contributions of genetic, environmental, and social factors. METHODS:
