Racial and ethnic disparities in a state-wide registry of patients with pancreatic cancer and an exploratory investigation of cancer cachexia as a contributor to observed inequities.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is characterized by racial/ethnic disparities and the debilitating muscle-wasting condition, cancer cachexia. Florida ranks second in the number of PC deaths and has a large and understudied minority population. We examined the primary hypothesis that PC incidence and mortality rates may be highest among Black Floridians and the secondary hypothesis that biological correlates of cancer cachexia may underlie disparities. PC incidence and mortality rates were estimated by race/ethnicity, gender, and county using publicly available state-wide cancer registry data that inclu…

Spatial responses and displacements according to Hurricane Michael.

This study highlights spatial responses and displacements following Hurricane Michael by analyzing X® (formerly known as Twitter) data across various states in the United States over a multitude of periods, regions, and demographic characteristics. This study finds that the top three states damaged by the hurricane (Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina) show a significantly higher proportion of tweets during the hurricane week than the prehurricane and post-hurricane weeks. Furthermore, people's responses on social network services have some similar and dissimilar characteristics compared to t…

Fungal keratitis and contact lenses: an old enemy unrecognized or a new nemesis on the block?

PURPOSE: To review studies of fungal keratitis related to contact lenses and determine whether the recent insurgence is a new phenomenon or an exacerbation of an ongoing trend. METHODS: A review of the recent literature on contact lens-related fungal ulcers and a comparison to older studies. RESULTS: The incidence of fungal keratitis associated with contact lenses increased from 5% in the 1980s to between 10% and 25% in the 1990s and was noted to be 44% in Florida at the turn of the century. The most recent study from Florida showed that the incidence had increased from 29% in the late 1990s…

The workers' compensation system: worker friend or foe?

BACKGROUND: The workers' compensation system was designed to help injured workers who have substantial medical expenses and perhaps have lost a great deal of income. This study determines both similarities and differences in how workers experience their interactions with the workers' compensation systems in Florida and Wisconsin. METHODS: Ethnographic open-ended interviews with 204 workers from Florida and 198 workers in Wisconsin were conducted. All the workers had back injuries in 1990 and were either paid workers' compensation temporary disability benefits for at least 4 weeks or received …

The influence of seasonal temperatures on the natural regulation of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, in the southern U.S.A.

The incidence of screwworm cases in Texas during the 1962-82 sterile-male eradication campaign is analysed in relation to seasonal temperatu … release methods, but also simulates the historical pattern of screwworm abundance in both Texas and Florida over the last 100 years. It is concluded that screwworm, being essentially a tropical species, might well have been eradicated from the southern U.S.A. by exceptionally unfavourable climate such as occurred in Florida in 1958 and in Texas in the lat …

Maternal Outcomes of WIC Recipients Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic restricted the availability of healthcare and social services. This retrospective study reports WIC enrollment rates and presents descriptive data on prenatal care access and selected maternal health conditions among pregnant women in Florida before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using birth data linking maternal and infant characteristics from the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics, we examined birth records from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020 related to women ranging from 11 to 59 years of age who received WIC. The descriptive …

Wrack enhancement of post-hurricane vegetation and geomorphological recovery in a coastal dune.

Coastal ecosystems such as sand dunes, mangrove forests, and salt marshes provide natural storm protection for vulnerable shorelines. At the same time, storms erode and redistribute biological materials among coastal systems via wrack. Yet how such cross-ecosystem subsidies affect post-storm recovery is not well understood. Here, we report an experimental investigation into the effect of storm wrack on eco-geomorphological recovery of a coastal embryo dune in north-eastern Florida, USA, following hurricane Irma. We contrasted replicated 100-m2 wrack-removal and unmanipulated (control) plots, m…

Space use patterns of sharks in relation to boat activity in an urbanized coastal waterway.

Aquatic ecosystems face numerous anthropogenic threats associated with coastal urbanization, with boat activity being among the most prevalent. The present study aimed to evaluate a potential relationship between boat activity and shark space use in Biscayne Bay, Florida (USA), a coastal waterway exposed to high levels of boating. Spatiotemporal patterns in boat density and traffic were determined from aerial surveys and underwater acoustic recorders, respectively. These data were then compared with residency patterns of bull (Carcharhinus leucas), nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and great hamm…

Genomic Diversity of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) Type A in a Pediatric Cohort in the United States After the Onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) is a leading cause of respiratory infections in young children. HRSV cases declined dramatically in the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a resurgence in 2022/2023. To investigate patterns of viral genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics during this period, HRSV sequences were analyzed at national and global levels, including newly sequenced samples from pediatric patients at a major Florida medical center in Alachua County. Our Florida strains clustered within multiple clades, with no clear association between specific clades and…

Effects of Hurricane Irma on mosquito abundance and species composition in a metropolitan Gulf coastal city, 2016-2018.

Mosquitoes are the most common disease vectors worldwide. In coastal cities, the spread, activity, and longevity of vector mosquitoes are influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall, which affect their geographic distribution, biting rates, and lifespan. We examined mosquito abundance and species composition before and after Hurricane Irma in Miami, Dade County, Florida, and identified which mosquito species predominated post-Hurricane Irma. Our results showed that mosquito populations increased post-Hurricane Irma: 7.3 and 8.0 times more mosquitoes were cap…
