OBJECTIVE: To study the durability of the anti-demineralization effects of fluoride varnish after being applied to dental root surfaces.
METHODS: Coronal and radicular dentin samples were prepared from extracted human teeth. Duraphat® (DP) was applied to the dentine surfaces to form a protective film. The film-dentin interfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the fluoride element was analyzed with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Thus, the differences between applying DP on crowns and roots were compared. Radicular dentin samples were prepared and randomly divi-de

Globally, dental caries remains a health concern due to their complications of pain, infection, and tooth loss. The traditional dental remineralization by using fluoride is effective but limited in advanced caries and continued treatments. While Calcium phosphate is beneficial in restoring mineral, it needs external aids to be effective. This research explores a synergistic approach to enhance tooth remineralization for a total of 72 samples by harnessing the effects of nano-chitosan, fluoride, and exposure to magnetic fields. The nano-chitosan solution is prepared using an ionic interaction m

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease primarily driven by an imbalanced oral microbiome, with cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque playing a central role. Fluoride-containing toothpaste is commonly used for caries prevention, but its effects on the oral microbiome, particularly at different fluoride concentrations, remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the short-term impact of fluoride toothpaste with different fluoride concentrations (standard fluoride 1000 ppm, low fluoride 500 ppm, and non-fluoride) on the oral microbial community in preschool children.
METHODS: A tota

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Previous studies have highlighted the high burden of oral diseases in refugee camps, but there are few robustly evaluated school-based oral health programmes in these settings. The objective of this study was to pilot a school-based toothbrushing, handwashing, and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application in a refugee camp in Bangladesh. It hosts the world's largest number of refugees with over 1 million Rohingya from Myanmar.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study that consisted of a multipronged oral health intervention: supervised daily toothbrushing, handwashing, and S

Background: Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. Fluoride has long been recognized as a cornerstone of caries prevention through enamel remineralization, inhibition of demineralization, and antibacterial activity. However, controversies persist regarding systemic exposure, potential health risks, and ethical debates over community water fluoridation. Previous reviews often focused on isolated interventions, whereas a critical synthesis of mechanisms, clinical efficacy, safety, and public health perspectives is still lacking. Methods: This narrative review…

BACKGROUND: Extensive academic research has documented the tobacco industry's manipulation of science. Recently, scholars have begun examining the sugar industry's use of similar tactics to downplay sugar's role in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and tooth decay. Archival records show sugar-industry-funded scientists criticized evidence linking sugar to these harms and deflected attention to other risk factors. Sugar's connection to tooth decay has been the most difficult harm for the industry to deny. Evidence is emerging that the industry turned to promoting fluoride as the soluti

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancers often leads to radiation-induced caries and microstructural dentin alterations. This laboratory study evaluated the impact of radiation on dentin microhardness and the effectiveness of various topical fluoride treatments in mitigating these effects. One hundred dentin specimens from extracted human teeth were irradiated with a cumulative dose of 60 Gy, simulating therapeutic conditions. Post-irradiation, specimens received weekly applications of silver diamine fluoride (SDF), SDF with potassium iodide, or sodium fluoride varnishes with and without ad

BACKGROUND: Fluoride exposure and its effects on human health are controversial and highly debated. While beneficial in preventing dental caries, fluoride has been linked to skeletal and dental fluorosis at high levels, as well as other adverse health endpoints in children and adults. However, the safe range of exposure for bone health remains poorly defined. We used existing literature to quantify the dose-response relation between fluoride exposure and bone health, focusing on fracture risk and bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analy

BACKGROUND: International economic evaluations have not found convincing evidence that the application of fluoride varnish (FV) in preschool children is a cost-effective anti-caries measure, and there is a lack of economic evaluations of FV in the Brazilian context.
AIM: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness (CE) of standard care plus FV for Brazilian preschoolers in the general population, comparing it to standard care in terms of prevention of cavitated caries lesions and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) outcomes.
METHODS: Markov models were used, with a 4-year time horizon and

The activation and functionalization of C─F bonds, the strongest bonds between carbon and any other element, via C─N bond formation to generate complex molecules has remained a compelling challenge. Herein, we present a ligand-centered redox-controlled effective strategy employing a zinc amide catalyst (C) to achieve facile defluoroamination of fluoroarenes with several N-nucleophiles (>90 substrates) under mild conditions. Notably, this adaptable protocol works readily with most types of fluoroarenes and a diverse range of N─H moieties that include secondary and primary amines, indoles, azole

Fluoride plays a dual role in dental health-preventing caries at optimal levels but causing fluorosis when excessive. While most animal studies focus on young mice, age-related susceptibility to fluoride remains poorly understood. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of developmental stage-dependent differences in fluoride toxicity, focusing on enamel formation and systemic fluoride clearance. Male C57BL/6J mice-adolescent (5-9 weeks) and mature (16-20 weeks)-were exposed to fluoride in drinking water (0, 50, 100, or 125 ppm) for 6 weeks. Adolescent mice developed pronounced de
