Dietary diversity and associated factors among pregnant women in the Southern Province of Rwanda: A facility-based cross-sectional study.

The inadequate dietary diversity of pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, is rising and leading to macro and … ease in nutrition knowledge score. The factors negatively associated with dietary diversity include food insecurity, which reduced the odds of dietary diversity (aOR = 0.19 [0.07, 0.50]) per five-unit increase in food insecurity. Furthermore, the odds of adequate dietary diversity were lower among urban residents than rural residents (aOR = 0.69 [0.47, 1.03]). Th …

Effects of improved on-farm crop storage on DNA methylation of mothers and their infants: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1. We further analyzed whether anthropometrics, stress, and mental …

Feeding Behaviours in Families With Children or Young People With Autism: A Systematic Review.

Children and young people with autism often experience feeding difficulties and are at increased risk of food insecurity. However, the interplay between these challenges remains underexplored. This systematic review aimed to synthesise existing evidence on the prevalence and characteristics of feeding behaviours in families with children with autism, alongside associated factors such as sensory sensitivity and mealtime dynamics. Nine databases identified 399 records. Following screening, 88 original empirical research studies (including quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods designs) were…

Elucidating Adverse Nutritional Implications of Exposure to Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Mycotoxins through Stable Isotope Techniques.

Multiple drivers of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) include a rapid shift from predominantly plant-based diets to energy-dense foods based on meats, milk, animal fats and vegetable oils. The shift to overweight and obesity is driven by increased exposure to mass media, urbanization, technological advances in food processing, rising income and increased population density associated with increased access to cheap foods. At the same time, undernutrition persists mainly due to food insecurity and lack of access to safe water, sanitation and adequate health care. All known nutrition interv…

Perceived Supports and Barriers to Optimal Nutrition and Physical Activity in a Cohort of Vermont Older Adults: A Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods Study.

The purpose of this study was to identify supports and barriers that impacted nutrition status and physical activity in Vermont's older adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design guided by the socio-ecological model, older Vermonters participated in surveys and focus groups. Quantitative and qualitative strands were analyzed separately and merged during final analysis. Data from 52 participants (70 years + 6.2; 75% female) indicate 31% at risk for falls and malnutrition and 14% food insecure. Thematic analysis revealed Vermont has many food

Food systems determinants of nutritional health and wellbeing in urban informal settlements: A scoping review in LMICs.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing food and nutritional inequities are apparent in urban settings across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), along with nutrition transition towards ultra-processed diets high in fat, sugar, and salt. In urban informal settlements, characterized by insecurity and inadequate housing and infrastructure, food systems dynamics and their nutritional implications are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the food system determinants of food and nutrition security in urban informal settlements in LMICs with the goal of identifying effective approaches and ent
