Distinct characteristics of Scytalidium dimidiatum and non-dermatophyte onychomycosis as compared with dermatophyte onychomycosis.

Studies of demographic data, predisposing factors and clinical manifestations of non-dermatophyte mold (NDM) infection particularly in Scytalidium spp. have been limited. This study aimed to compare these data between dermatophytes (DMP) and NDM onychomycosis with statistical analysis. This was a retrospective chart review of outpatients with onychomycosis in the Nail Clinic of Department of Dermatology between January 2011 and December 2013. A total of 237 patients who had presented with onychomycosis were included. One hundred and eighty patients (75.9%) were infected with DMP: Trichophyton

An investigation into the inhibitory effect of ultraviolet radiation on Trichophyton rubrum.

Fungal infection of nails, onychomycosis, is predominantly caused by Trichophyton rubrum. This infection is an important public health concern due to its persistent nature and high recurrence rates. Alternative treatments are urgently required. One such alternative is phototherapy involving the action of photothermal or photochemical processes. The aim of this novel study was to assess which wavelengths within the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum were inhibitory and equally important nail transmissible. Initial irradiations of T. rubrum spore suspensions were carried out using a tunable wavelength la

[Onychomycosis is rare in young children, and treatment is a task for dermatological specialists].

Onychomycosis was diagnosed in a two-year-old girl. The infection was caused by Trichophyton rubrum, which is the most frequent cause of toenail onychomycosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction, microscopy and culture. She was treated with orally given terbinafine and topically given amorolfine with clinical improvement at the following control visit. Onychomycosis is rare in children, but the occurrence seems to be increasing. Medical treatment can be topical, systemic or a combination of these.

Radiology-pathology conference: neutrophilic fasciitis and panniculitis of the feet (Sweet's syndrome).

Sweet's syndrome is characterised by pyrexia, cutaneous lesions, neutrophilia and an infiltrate of mature neutrophils in the dermis. While extracutaneous disease is not uncommon, neutrophilic fasciitis has rarely been described. We report the imaging appearances with clinical and histological correlation of a case of drug-induced neutrophilic fasciitis in a 56-year-old man.

Focal palmoplantar and gingival hyperkeratosis: a case report.

UNLABELLED: We report a rare genetic condition characterized by gingival hyperkeratosis with skin changes affecting the hands and feet. The patient presented with asymptomatic oral lesions and the diagnosis was reached by taking a full clinical history and biopsy tests. Palmoplantar keratosis can be a feature of a range of different syndromes and can be associated with periodontal destruction, benign oral keratosis or cancer of the oesophagus. It is important for dentists to be aware that clues to diagnosis can be gained from examination of the hands and feet, in addition to an oral examinatio

Topical treatments for fungal infections of the skin and nails of the foot.

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections of the feet normally occur in the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). The skin between the toes is a frequent site of infection which can cause pain and itchiness. Fungal infections of the nail (onychomycosis) can affect the entire nail plate. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of topical treatments in successfully treating (rate of treatment failure) fungal infections of the skin of the feet and toenails and in preventing recurrence. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register (January 2005), the Cochrane Central Register of Co

Tinea faciei incognito due to Trichophyton rubrum as a result of autoinoculation from onychomycosis.

The localisation of a dermatophytosis on the face is rare. Differential diagnoses include a broad range of dermatological disorders, e. g. contact dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, seborrhoeic dermatitis, demodicosis, and polymorphic photo eruptions. Two patients suffering from tinea faciei incognito caused by Trichophyton rubrum are presented. Diagnosis was based on mycological diagnostics of skin scrapings using Calcofluor preparation and cultivation of the causative dermatophyte. Both patients were suffering from tinea pedis and tinea unguium caused by the same dermatophyte species. An infect

The oral antifungal patient.

With the launch of the modern generation of oral antifungals almost a decade ago, an infection that was once thought of as intractable can now be cured. These drugs all offer the advantages of high efficacy rates, short-course therapy, and relative safety. However, they are far from perfect and not indicated in every situation. This article discusses issues such as patient selection, management, monitoring, and long-term follow-up.

Scytalidium dimidiatum melanonychia and scaly plantar skin in four patients from the Maghreb: imported disease or outbreak in a Belgian mosque?

Scytalidium dimidiatum is a geophilic dematiaceous, non-dermatophyte mould that can become a pathogen for plants and humans particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. We report 4 cases of S. dimidiatum onychomycosis presenting clinically as thickened and dark toenails. The skin of the soles was scaly. The time and location of the contaminations were uncertain. Indeed, the patients were ancient immigrants from the Maghreb to Belgium. They were also regularly travelling to their countries of origin. They were also often barefoot in the same Belgian mosque. The disease was unresponsive to
