Interference with existing memories alters offline intrinsic functional brain connectivity.

The notion that already existing memories can be modified after their reactivation has received an increasing amount of experimental support, with empirical data accumulating across species and memory paradigms. However, there is no evidence for systems-level task-free intrinsic signatures of memory modification. Here, using a combination of behavioral, brain stimulation, and neuroimaging paradigms, we report that noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulation interference with a reactivated motor memory altered offline task-free corticostriatal interregional functional connectivity, reducing i

Functional activation during reading in relation to the sulci of the angular gyrus region.

Neurological studies suggest that the angular gyrus region of the inferior parietal lobule may be critical for reading. However, unambiguous demonstration of angular gyrus involvement from lesion and functional neuroimaging studies is lacking, partly because of the absence of detailed morphological descriptions of this region. On the basis of our recent anatomical examination of this region and a tightly controlled functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm, the present investigation demonstrated reading-related activity in the region of the angular gyrus that lies between the central and …

Neural correlates of late talking: A systematic review of electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Late talking (LT), a delay in expressive vocabulary in early childhood, affects a significant minority of toddlers and can be a precursor to persistent language and literacy impairments. While behavioral profiles are well-documented, a systematic synthesis of its underlying neurobiology is lacking. This systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesize evidence from electrophysiological (EEG) and neuroimaging (MRI) studies on the neural correlates of late talking in children. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed from inception

Digital Atlases to Unlock the Potential of Brain Biorepository Tissues for Interdisciplinary Research.

Human brain tissue preserved in biorepositories is foundational for the structural, cellular, and biomolecular research necessary for a mechanistic understanding of neurological diseases. Realizing the research potential of these valuable resources requires well-characterized research-relevant tissue that can be efficiently identified by investigators and incorporated into the conceptual and computational frameworks of interdisciplinary research. Several large-scale efforts to improve research reliability and reproducibility have sought to characterize and annotate the processes by which these

Identifying and Predicting Autism Spectrum Disorder Based on Multi-Site Structural MRI With Machine Learning.

Although emerging evidence has implicated structural/functional abnormalities of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), definitive neuroimaging markers remain obscured due to inconsistent or incompatible findings, especially for structural imaging. Furthermore, brain differences defined by statistical analysis are difficult to implement individual prediction. The present study has employed the machine learning techniques under the unified framework in neuroimaging to identify the neuroimaging markers of patients with ASD and distinguish them from typically developing controls(TDC). Developmental dyslexia: dysfunction of a left hemisphere reading network.

This mini-review summarizes and integrates findings from recent meta-analyses and original neuroimaging studies on functional brain abnormalities in dyslexic readers. Surprisingly, there is little empirical support for the standard neuroanatomical model of developmental dyslexia, which localizes the primary phonological decoding deficit in left temporo-parietal (TP) regions. Rather, recent evidence points to a dysfunction of a left hemisphere reading network, which includes occipito-temporal (OT), inferior frontal, and inferior parietal regions.

Regional cerebral blood flow in a patient with Nasu-Hakola disease.

We report a functional neuroimaging study of a 43-year-old woman with Nasu-Hakola disease (NHD). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) images were measured with technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). rCBF was decreased in the bilateral frontal lobes and thalamus. This finding was consistent with the known underlying neuropathology in patients with NHD. Brain SPECT is useful for demonstrating the pathophysiologic brain region in patients with NHD.

Crossed cerebral - cerebellar diaschisis: MRI evaluation.

MRI, done later in life, in two patients with infantile hemiplegia syndrome showed significant volume loss in the cerebellar hemisphere contralateral to the side of the affected cerebrum. The cerebellar volume loss seemed to correlate with the degree of volume loss in the contralateral cerebral hemisphere. These observations provide morphological evidence of the phenomenon of crossed cerebral-cerebellar diaschisis (CCD). Functional neuroimaging studies in support of the concept of CCD has been critically reviewed.

Imaging of neurodegenerative diseases.

Neuroimaging of degenerative brain disorders has continued to advance, primarily with MR imaging, single-photon emission CT, and positron emission tomography. Information gained from these morphologic and functional imaging studies provides insight into the pathologic and pathophysiologic changes associated with these diseases. Recent papers relating to various neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementias, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related dementia, Pick's disease, Huntington's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and others are reviewed and discusse

Effect of inflammation on neurovascular coupling, microperfusion, and clinical outcomes in ischemic stroke patients: a case series report.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic stroke leads to a range of sequelae that affect daily functioning. In many cases, such as wake-up strokes or late hospital arrivals, the therapeutic window for reperfusion is missed for the patient, and functional outcomes remain uncertain. The inflammatory response to ischemia plays a pivotal role in the initiation, progression, and recovery phase of stroke. Yet, a gap remains in understanding its impact on neuroimaging and clinical outcomes. This prospective case series investigates the relationship between inflammation, neuroimaging findings in the first 48 h after st

The Role of the Cerebellum in Tremor - Evidence from Neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging research has played a key role in identifying which cerebral changes are associated with tremor. Here we will focus on the cerebellum, which may drive tremor oscillations, process tremor-related afferents, modulate activity in remote brain regions, or a combination. METHODS: On the 6th of October 2021, we conducted a PubMed search to select articles providing neuroimaging evidence for cerebellar involvement in essential tremor (ET), Parkinson's disease (PD) tremor, and dystonic tremor (DT). RESULTS: In ET, tremor-related activity is found in motor areas of the bilate

Mapping migraine to a common brain network.

Inconsistent findings from migraine neuroimaging studies have limited attempts to localize migraine symptomatology. Novel brain network mapping techniques offer a new approach for linking neuroimaging findings to a common neuroanatomical substrate and localizing therapeutic targets. In this study, we attempted to determine whether neuroanatomically heterogeneous neuroimaging findings of migraine localize to a common brain network. We used meta-analytic coordinates of decreased grey matter volume in migraineurs as seed regions to generate resting state functional connectivity network maps from

Exploring Psychological Factors and Brain Alterations in Functional Anorectal Pain Patients: Insights From Multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Investigations.

BACKGROUND: Functional anorectal pain (FAP) is classified as one of the disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). It involves the impairments of anorectal afferents and disrupted gut-brain communication. However, neuroimaging studies focused on FAP are lacking. METHODS: A total of 25 FAP patients and 18 healthy controls (HC) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans, and collection of demographic data, mental health assessment scales and pain assessment questionnaires. Neural processes linking joint hypermobility and anxiety: key roles for the amygdala and insular cortex.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms are elevated among people with joint hypermobility. The underlying neural mechanisms are attributed theoretically to effects of variant connective tissue on the precision of interoceptive representations contributing to emotions. AIM: To investigate the neural correlates of anxiety and hypermobility using functional neuroimaging. METHOD: We used functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging to quantify regional brain responses to emotional stimuli (facial expressions) in people with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) (N = 30) and a non-anxious comparison group (N = …

Study protocol for a pilot clinical trial to understand neural mechanisms of response to a psychological treatment for pain and anxiety in pediatric functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD).

BACKGROUND: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD) are the most common chronic pain conditions of childhood and are made worse by co-occurring anxiety. Our research team found that the Aim to Decrease Pain and Anxiety Treatment (ADAPT), a six-session coping skills program using cognitive behavioral therapy strategies, was effective in improving pain-related symptoms and anxiety symptoms compared to standard care. In follow-up, this current randomized clinical trial (RCT) aims to test potential neural mechanisms underlying the effect of ADAPT. Specifically, this two-arm RCT will explore cha

A narrative review of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) applications in hearing loss, tinnitus and vestibular disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as a promising neuroimaging modality for investigating cortical activity in auditory and vestibular domains. Its portability, device compatibility, and motion tolerance make it particularly suited for use in populations that are challenging to study with conventional neuroimaging techniques, such as infants and cochlear implant (CI) users. The present study aims to explore the potential and limitations of this neuroimaging technique in the audiological and vestibular fields, offering an integrated perspective across pediat

Progression of atypical parkinsonian syndromes: PROSPECT-M-UK study implications for clinical trials.

The advent of clinical trials of disease-modifying agents for neurodegenerative disease highlights the need for evidence-based end point selection. Here we report the longitudinal PROSPECT-M-UK study of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), multiple system atrophy (MSA) and related disorders, to compare candidate clinical trial end points. In this multicentre UK study, participants were assessed with serial questionnaires, motor examination, neuropsychiatric and MRI assessments at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Participants were classified by diagnosis at baseline and

Time course of sensorimotor cortex reorganization during upper extremity task accompanying motor recovery early after stroke: An fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: The acute phase of stroke is accompanied by functional changes and interplay of both hemispheres. However, our understanding of how the time course of upper limb functional motor recovery is related to the progression of brain reorganization in the sensorimotor areas remains limited. This study aimed to assess the time course of hemodynamic patterns of cortical sensorimotor areas using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and motor recovery within three months after a stroke. METHOD: Eight right-handed first ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke patients (60±8 years, 3 women) with

Default Mode Network Lateralization and Memory in Healthy Aging and Alzheimer's Disease.

Lateralization of default mode network (DMN) functioning has been shown to change with age. Similarly, lateralization of frontal lobe function has been shown to decline in age. The impact of amyloid pathology and the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on resting state lateralization has not been investigated. Due to the preferential involvement of the left hemisphere in verbal tasks, there may be a benefit to higher levels of left-lateralization in the performance of verbal memory tasks. Here we compared functional lateralization of the anterior and posterior DMN between four groups of pa
