Joint attention, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviours in children with autistic disorder.

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between abilities to initiate and respond to joint attention and symptoms of autism that have, and have not, been theoretically linked to joint attention. Participants were 51 boys and five girls with autistic disorder, aged between 2 years and 6 years 5 months. Measures of joint attention behaviours, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviour were administered during a single assessment. As predicted, the correlations between joint attention and the two behaviours theoretically linked to joint attention (i.e. social relating and la

Symbol use in a case of elective mutism.

A case of elective mutism in a 4-yr.-old girl is discussed with reference to symbol use in the phenomenology and treatment of this disorder. Findings are related to current controversies regarding the classification of this rare disorder, which may be associated with more severe psychotic-spectrum disorders of childhood.

The greeting behavior of fragile X males.

Mentally retarded males with a fragile site on the X chromosome (Xq27) were observed to exhibit a highly idiosyncratic but well-coordinated, stereotypic form of gaze avoidance during greeting ceremonies that involved the whole upper body. A comparison group of persons with other etiologically defined syndromes of mental retardation did not. Results suggest that the aberrant greeting behavior may be uniquely associated with one syndrome of mental retardation with a defined genetic etiology. The behavior pattern does not appear until middle childhood, however, and its developmental induction rem

MORIC: CSI Delay-Doppler Decomposition for Robust Wi-Fi-based Human Activity Recognition.

The newly established IEEE 802.11bf Task Group aims to amend the WLAN standard to support advanced sensing applications such as human activi … forms state-of-the-art approaches in cross-user hand motion recognition, especially for challenging gestures. Incorporating only a few calibration samples further improves accuracy, demonstrating MORIC's adaptability and highlighting the potential of the proposed methodology for practical Wi-Fi sensing in real-world scenarios.

Nonverbal empathy and perceived therapist warmth and competence: An experimental video vignette study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how nonverbal empathy affects perceptions of therapists' competence and warmth. It also looked at the influe … t influence the therapeutic alliance. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Therapists should self-monitor their gestures, tone, and facial expressions, and nonverbal communication should be emphasized in therapy training.

Inferring Fine Finger Motions for Prosthetic Control: An Ultrasound-Based Approach to Real-Time Estimation of Finger Kinematics.

A central challenge in building robotic prostheses is the creation of a sensor-based system able to read physiological signals from the lower limb and instruct a robotic hand to perform various tasks. Existing systems typically perform discrete gestures such as pointing or grasping, by employing electromyography (EMG) or ultrasound (U.S.) technologies to analyze muscle states. While detecting finger activation has been done in the past, we are interested in detection, or inference, done in the context of fine motions that evolve over time. Examples include motions occurring when performing fin…

Factors influencing speech improvement following maxillary complete-arch implant-supported restorations: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored factors affecting speech improvement in patients with an edentulous maxilla after the delivery of a complete- … adaptation time. The residual bone volume's impact on consonants varies with specific articulatory gestures. This study provides insights into forecasting speech outcomes following IFDP restoration and provides recommendations and methods for data collection in developing future prediction models.

MolecularWebXR: Multiuser discussions in chemistry and biology through immersive and inclusive augmented and virtual reality.

MolecularWebXR is a new web-based platform for education, science communication and scientific peer discussion in chemistry and biology, based on modern web-based Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). With no installs as it is all web-served, MolecularWebXR enables multiple users to simultaneously explore, communicate and discuss concepts about chemistry and biology in immersive 3D environments, by manipulating and passing around objects with their bare hands and pointing at different elements with natural hand gestures. Users may either be present in the same physical space or dist…

Multimodal processing in face-to-face interactions: A bridging link between psycholinguistics and sensory neuroscience.

In face-to-face communication, humans are faced with multiple layers of discontinuous multimodal signals, such as head, face, hand gestures, speech and non-speech sounds, which need to be interpreted as coherent and unified communicative actions. This implies a fundamental computational challenge: optimally binding only signals belonging to the same communicative action while segregating signals that are not connected by the communicative content. How do we achieve such an extraordinary feat, reliably, and efficiently? To address this question, we need to further move the study of human commun…

Design and custom fabrication of specialized orthoses for the upper-limb stabilization in childhood dyskinesia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood dyskinesia (CD) is a complex movement disorder with components of dystonic and hyperkinetic nature, characterized by involuntary, sometimes stereotypical postures and gestures that are often impossible to control and hinder the execution of willful motion. The standard orthoses for the treatment of neurological diseases, including CD, are generally poorly differentiated for functional characteristics. The application of similar devices for movement disorders is far less generalized because of the very different symptoms, including the incapacity to control rather than ini…

Marble Burying in NMRI Male Mice Is Preferentially Sensitive to Pre- Versus Postsynaptic 5-HT1A Receptor Biased Agonists.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by excessive and repetitive thoughts and gestures, mainly treated pharmacologically with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The marble burying test in mice is commonly used to model OCD and has been shown to be sensitive to SSRIs, which decrease burying behavior. The activity of SSRIs in this model is mediated through activation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 1A receptors, but the respective implication of pre- versus postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors has not been elucidated. Here, we investigated marble buryi…
