"What you don't have, you can't give": a mixed methods assessment of healthcare professionals' palliative care knowledge and attitudes in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Although palliative care (PC) is recognized as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course and universal health coverage, more than 85% of the global need for PC is unmet. Nigeria has isolated PC provision, with a narrow scope, limited availability, and inadequate support for PC services, despite having adequate legislation to support the operation in the country. Given the rising incidence of chronic illnesses that are amenable to PC in Nigeria, this study aimed to explore healthcare professionals' (HCPs') knowledge and attitudes towards PC and identify targets

Guideline-concordance along the cancer care continuum and breast cancer mortality by race and ethnicity: a SEER-Medicare study.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between guideline-concordant breast cancer care and hazard of cancer death by patient race and ethnicity. METHODS: We used SEER-Medicare data to identify 212,555 older women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 2000 and 2017. Guideline-concordant diagnostic workup, locoregional treatment, and initiation of systemic therapy were defined using NCCN guidelines. Hazards of breast cancer death 2 and 5 years from diagnosis by each guideline-concordance outcome overall and stratified by race and ethnicity were estimated using Cox proportional hazards mod

Perceptions and treatment seeking for abnormal uterine bleeding among women of reproductive age group in rural North India: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), affecting 3–30% of women of reproductive age, can lead to serious physical complications such as anaemia and infertility, and also negatively impacts mental well-being, social participation, and economic productivity. Despite this, treatment-seeking remains low due to poor health literacy, cultural taboos, limited autonomy in decision-making, and inadequate access to female healthcare providers. METHODS: The qualitative study was conducted between September—November 2022 in Sahupura Village, under Primary Health Centre (PHC) Dayalpur, Faridabad, Har

Community voices, strategies to improve understanding, and access to prostate cancer genomic testing.

OBJECTIVES: Community voices highlight opportunities to improve understanding and access to prostate cancer genomic testing; however, uptake remains limited, particularly among racially and geographically diverse populations. This study explored community perceptions of prostate cancer genomic testing and identified barriers, facilitators, and communication priorities to inform culturally responsive, literacy-sensitive education strategies. In this study, we focus specifically on tissue-based genomic testing used to inform treatment decision-making, rather than cancer screening or inherited ge

Recommendations to Improve Healthcare Service Provision for Cognitive Impairment in People With Parkinson's Disease: A Mixed Methods Study of the Lived Experience Expert Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment, including dementia, is one of the most important nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). It lowers quality of life and impacts health and economic outcomes for individuals living with PD, their families, and society. Poor recognition and management of cognitive impairment and dementia in PD highlights the need for improved diagnostic and postdiagnostic care pathways. We aimed to inquire about current health services for cognitive evaluation in Australia from people with lived experience of PD. The objective was to derive recommendations for best practic

Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Perceptions Among Noncollege Young Adults and TikTok Influencers: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a proven and effective tool for preventing several types of cancers, yet vaccination rates among young adults remain suboptimal, particularly among those not enrolled in 4-year colleges. This population can be more difficult to reach due to fewer established institutional touchpoints, limited engagement with campus-based health services, and greater variability in access to preventive care. At the same time, social media has become a dominant source of information for young adults, with TikTok (ByteDance) emerging as one of the most widely

Factors affecting general practitioners' referrals of patients to hip and knee arthroplasty: a focus group study from Northern Norway.

BACKGROUND: In Norway, patients have the right to choose their healthcare provider for elective specialized treatments, including the approximately 20,000 annual hip and knee arthroplasty surgeries. There is considerable regional variation in mobility - 'patient leakage' - out of a regional health authority for patients seeking these surgical procedures. General practitioners play a vital role in this decision-making process, acting as gatekeepers in referring patients to specialized healthcare. This study investigates the factors influencing Norwegian general practitioners' referral decision

"To reach the new generation… TikTok:" Applying behavioral economics to adolescent and young adult HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis education.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate how adolescents and young adults (AYA) would respond to the framing of health messages for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using principles of psychology and economics (behavioral economics). Our hypothesis was that gain-frame messaging (focused on benefits) would be better received than loss-frame messaging (focused on risks). METHODS: Focus groups were held to determine AYA preferences for messaging around PrEP to design a social media video. Two videos were developed using either gain-frame (emphasized positive effects of PrEP) or loss-frame messaging (emphas

Young People's Perceptions of Why Sexually Active Peers May Not Use Prescribed Contraception.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Access to contraception is a necessary component of reproductive autonomy for adolescents and young adults (AYAs). AYAs persistently face barriers to accessing confidential, affordable contraception. In this study, we characterize and describe the most common reasons AYAs perceive that their sexually active peers might not use prescribed contraception. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional national text-based survey of AYAs aged 14-24, we conducted a content analysis of open-ended text responses to a question about why AYAs' sexually active peers might not use prescribed contracep

"I was told it was the pill that suits me": A qualitative study of women's perceptions and experiences of medical reasons for non-preferred contraceptive use.

BACKGROUND: People have contraceptive autonomy when they can obtain their preferred contraceptive method. Non-preferred method use may result from inappropriate medical contraindications, which occur when providers apply incorrect contraceptive eligibility criteria during consultations. Non-preferred method use and inappropriate medical contraindications are understudied in the Global South, partially due to measurement challenges. OBJECTIVES: This study provides the first evidence in over two decades that inappropriate medical contraindications are still a barrier to preferred method use in

'Having children is like rain, as they say in our region': exploring refugees' reproductive agency.

Migrants with refugee backgrounds in the Netherlands face significant reproductive health challenges, including higher rates of unintended pregnancies and limited access to contraception. This study explores how post-migration realities affect the reproductive agency of refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea and Syria. Utilising a participatory approach, eight peer researchers from these communities conducted eight focus-group discussions and 118 in-depth interviews, involving four migrant grassroots organisations and two Dutch non-governmental organisations. The findings reveal that refu

The design and evaluation of a bone health teaching module for secondary school students in NSW, Australia.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The growing prevalence of osteoporosis requires preventative management starting from an early age as peak bone mass is typically reached by age 30. However, current Australian adolescents are not adequately addressing key osteoprotective factors. Alarmingly, around 17% have insufficient vitamin D levels, 55% consume insufficient dietary calcium, and 79% are insufficiently active. Addressing these insufficiencies via bone health education and promoting healthier lifestyle choices are crucial to mitigate the risk of osteoporosis later in life. METHODS: A mixed methods study wa

Understanding the barriers and facilitators related to never treatment during mass drug administration among mobile and migrant populations in Mali: a qualitative exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Five of the neglected tropical diseases use a strategy of preventative chemotherapy distributed via mass drug administration (MDA) for all eligible people living in endemic areas. To be successful, high coverage must be sustained over multiple rounds. Therefore, it will be difficult to reach elimination as a public health problem using MDA if there remain clusters of people who have never been treated. The study aims to explore the reasons why people with high mobility report being never treated during MDA and to provide evidence to support the development of standardised questio

Relationships among Substance Use, Sociodemographics, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Awareness and Related Attitudes among Young Adult Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for two-thirds of new HIV diagnoses. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a highly efficacious HIV preventive medication, is underutilized. Identifying correlates of PrEP awareness and attitudes may help increase PrEP use. Thus, we evaluated (1) PrEP awareness; (2) differences in awareness related to substance use and sociodemographics; (3) initial PrEP information sources; and (4) possible associations between information sources and PrEP-related attitudes. Young adult (ages 18-30) HIV-negative MSM from Southern U.S. undertook a web survey including questio
