The effects of capsaicin, the major pungent ingredient of hot peppers, were assessed on sensory neuron neuropeptide levels and on sensory function in the adult guinea pig. Systemic doses of capsaicin as low as 2.5 mg/kg depleted substance P (SP) in dorsal roots plus ganglia (DRG) whereas a 10-mg/kg dose depleted the peptide maximally in DRG and in the dorsal spinal cord. The cytogenetic effect of two strains of Junin virus on bone marrow chromosomes of the guinea pig was studied. Animals infected with the attenuated strain XJ-Cl3 showed no differences from control animals. Guinea pigs inoculated with the pathogenic strain XJ exhibited a significant increase of abnormal cells, chromatid breaks, and chromosome fragments. The clastogenic ability of the XJ strain is similar to the reported effect of other viruses, while the XJ-Cl3 strain does not appear to be clastogenic.

The incidences of gynaecological and female breast neoplasms in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and in various other developing and developed countries for the period 1958 - 1980 are analysed and compared. In PNG gynaecological and breast carcinomas constituted 24.5 and 9% respectively of all neoplasms registered in females. Neural auditory responses in the guinea pig, monitored by surface electrodes (brain stem potentials and frequency-following responses) and by electrodes at the round window, were analyzed for evidence of frequency dependence in the range from 500 Hz to 15 kHz. The present investigation indicates that with cryosurgery it is possible to produce well defined cochlear lesions. The point of complete ablation can be chosen at will. A great advantage also is the fact that the bony capsule of the labyrinth is left intact. The remarkably slight scarring caused as well as the morphologically intact walls of the cochlear duct indicate an effective healing process, already completed after 6 days.
