Metacarpal stress fractures, although rare in the general population, are not uncommon in high performance athletes and may be seen in individuals with chronic pain associated with sports activity and with no history of acute trauma. Stress fracture fixation in skeletal long bones with different methods and implants have been discussed in the literature, both for patients who had conservative treatment failure and prophylactically. We describe the use of intramedullary cannulated screw fixation for the treatment of a 26-year-old professional boxer who complained of hand pain and swelling with

BACKGROUND: In 2020 there were 623 known TB infections in the Netherlands according to the Dutch ministry of health (RIVM). About 4% were located in bones and joints. The incidence of Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) TB in The Netherlands is about 1%.
CASE: We describe the case of a 46-year-old female with a painful and swelling of the mid phalangeal bone of the fourth left digit. Quantiferon was positive and PCR of the biopsy for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) in Ziehl-Neelsen staining confirmed tuberculous osteomyelitis. The strain was resistant for rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol and

Due to accurate preoperative imaging techniques, early diagnosis and effective chemotherapy, many tumors arising in the metaphyseo-diaphyseal regions of long bones can be segmentally resected with joint preservation. The intercalary resection of malignant bone tumor results in a bone defect which can represent a challenging reconstructive problem. The most commonly used surgical reconstructive options for these defects include biologic reconstructions such as allografts, vascularized fibular grafts, autogenous extracorporeally devitalized tumor bearing bone graft, combination of allografts or

The lateral margin of the zygomatic bone of Australopithecus boisei flares both anteriorly and laterally. As a result, the bone loses the suspensory bracing of the facial frame and is transformed into a visor-like structure that supports itself and gains its rigidity from its shape. The coronally oriented bony plates and the outline of the facial mask help the A. boisei face resist the effect of the visor-like structure, which tends to pull the bone plates of the face away from the midline. On the other hand, the nearly sagittal orientation of the zygomatic bone in Homo neanderthalensis helps

Breast cancer has high metastatic potential with distant metastases involving mainly lungs, liver and bones. Less frequently it gives distant spread to other organs. Herein we would like to present a very rare case of an acute cholecystitis which turned out to be a metastatic breast cancer in previously healthy woman. A female patient, 64-years old, presented to the emergency department with symptoms of biliary colic and acute abdomen. During the emergency cholecystectomy, we diagnosed the gallbladder empyema with thickened wall. There were also multiple metastatic nodules in the peritoneal ca

Most of our bones form through the process of endochondral ossification, which is tightly regulated by the activity of the cartilage growth plate. Chondrocyte maturation through the various stages of growth plate physiology ultimately results in hypertrophy. Chondrocyte hypertrophy is an essential contributor to longitudinal bone growth, but recent data suggest that these cells also play fundamental roles in signaling to other skeletal cells, thus coordinating endochondral ossification. On the other hand, ectopic hypertrophy of articular chondrocytes has been implicated in the pathogenesis of

Cleft lip (with or without cleft palate) has been documented in several species of nonhuman primates, which in general are susceptible at similar doses and stages of gestation to the same teratogens as humans. Cleft lip can be unilateral or bilateral, isolated, syndromic, familial, or genetic. Here we report the first case of syndromic cleft lip and palate in a male bare-eared squirrel monkey (Saimiri ustus). Associated with the orofacial clefts, the monkey manifested absence of bones, malformation of vertebrae L3, only 4 fingers in each hand, and shortening of tendons leading to inflection of

This work introduces a novel method of automating the process of patient-specific finite element (FE) model development using a mapped mesh technique. The objective is to map a predefined mesh (template) of high quality directly onto a new bony surface (target) definition, thereby yielding a similar mesh with minimal user interaction. To bring the template mesh into correspondence with the target surface, a deformable registration technique based on the FE method has been adopted. The procedure has been made hierarchical allowing several levels of mesh refinement to be used, thus reducing the

Most insects and birds are able to fly. The chitin made exoskeleton of insects poses them several constraints, and this is one the reasons they are in general small sized animals. On the other hand, because birds possess an endoskeleton made of bones they may grow much larger when compared to insects. The two taxa are quite different with regards to their general "design" platform, in particular with respect to their respiratory and circulatory systems. However, because they fly, they may share in common several traits, namely those associated with the control and regulatory mechanisms governi

Forearm deformities in children and adolescents may be congenital or developmental, or result from trauma; they may cause pain and decreased function of the wrist and hand. In this study we treated seven patients with forearm deformities (10 forearms) by callus distraction of either the radius or ulna using a monolateral external fixator after osteotomy. Target length was achieved in all cases. The results show significant improvement in range of motion of the forearm. All patients were satisfied with the appearance. There were no complications such as pin tract infection or neural impairment.

Fiber diameters were analyzed in the meatal segment of the cochlear nerve from 7 temporal bones obtained from 7 patients. Two patients had normal hearing for their age. Two had sustained noise exposure and one had presbyacusis of predominantly neural type. The cochleae displayed characteristic degeneration patterns. The other two manifested hearing loss of unspecified type. The fiber diameters ranged from 0.5 to 11 microns. The diameter distribution was unimodal in all seven nerves. The means of the diameters ranged from 4.2 to 5.5 microns. They were significantly different between patients wi

This paper deals with the surgical approaches to that part of the intratemporal facial nerve lying proximal to the cochleariform process and focuses on two issues: the advisability of disarticulating the ossicular chain to reach this area and the accessibility of the labyrinthine segment via the transmastoid, extralabyrinthine, subtemporal route. Relevant anatomical features, which are based on 39 gross temporal bones, 47 histologic sections, and 10 cadaveric specimens are first considered. In the head specimens, it was possible to attempt exploration of the entire nerve with the transmastoid,

Brachydactyly (BD) is a common congenital deformity of the hands and feet resulting from shortening, absence, or fusion of phalanges and metatarsals. Clinically, BD is categorized into isolated, complex and syndromic forms based on the presence of co-morbid congenital manifestations. The diagnosis of BD primarily depends on the examination of the appearance, along with the anteroposterior (AP) X-ray of hands and feet. Bell classified the isolated BD into five types based on the location and number of involved bones. Some BD can be further subdivided into several subtypes according to the sever

Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome (HFGS) is a dominantly inherited condition and one of the rarest cases encountered in clinical practice. It might be presented with a wide variety of limb malformations and urogenital defects manifestations. In this report, a unique and novel case of HFGS accompanied with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is described in a two-year-old male. The patient was admitted to the hospital in order to investigate a progressively enlarging mass in the lower abdomen. During hospitalization, oliguria was noted by resident physicians. However, hypospadias and dys

The aim of this study was to compare low-field MRI (0.2 T) and conventional radiography for the detection of acute fractures of the distal part of the extremities. X-ray and MRI examinations of 78 (41 fractures, 37 without fracture) patients with the clinical suspicion of an acute fracture in the distal part of the extremities were compared. Four experienced radiologists, two for each of the two modalities, independently analyzed the images. Interobserver variability and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for both methods were established. The MRI and conventional radiography rev

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal health among the elderly emerges as a pivotal public health concern against the backdrop of a globally aging population. Creatine, popular within fitness circles, has emerged as a subject of scientific inquiry for its potential benefits on elderly' musculoskeletal well-being. Despite extensive documentation of its effects on athletic performance, investigations into creatine's long-term contributions to the musculoskeletal health of the elderly are comparatively limited. Utilizing publicly accessible genetic datasets, this study aimed to explore the potential causal

UNLABELLED: A current doctrine in the dynamometric approach to determine lateralization of hand function states that in 10% of cases, the non-dominant hand will be stronger than the dominant hand. In this study, a novel MRI based modelling approach was applied to the first dorsal introsseus muscle (FDI), to determine whether the 10% rule may be applied to the FDI and may be partially explained by the arrangement of the anatomical components of the FDI.
METHODS: Initially the force generated by the thumb segment during an isometric pushing task in the horizontal plane was measured from 25 stro

Metacarpophalangeal pattern (MCPP) analysis is an application of an anthropometric technique that provides a quantitative assessment of the amount and direction of abnormality in the hand skeleton. MCPP analysis was undertaken on 15 individuals (9 males, 6 females) with Noonan syndrome ranging in age from 0.1 to 36 years with a mean age at 11.6 years. The overall average Z score for the MCPP variables was -2.1 and the range was -2.5 (for metacarpal two) and -1.5 (for middle phalanx 5). The average hand pattern variability index, a measure of hand bone length relationships, was abnormal. A Pear
