Understanding health literacy: an expanded model.

A long and yet unfinished history of investigating how individual capabilities and social processes explain or predict health indicates that poor education, low literacy, poor health and early death are strongly linked around the world. However, the complexity of those relationships is not fully understood. In this article, we propose an expanded model of health literacy characterized by four domains: fundamental literacy (reading, writing, speaking and numeracy), science literacy, civic literacy and cultural literacy. To explore the utility of this model, we examine selected pieces of the pub

Anti-smoking programme for diabetic patients: the agony and the ecstasy.

It is generally accepted that people with diabetes should be encouraged to abstain from smoking but there are few data on the best strategy to implement this. In a preliminary survey of our diabetic patients, knowledge of the general and specific health effects of smoking was poor. In a prospective study of 70 diabetic smokers, only 50% agreed to participate in an anti-smoking programme, and the drop-out rate was high irrespective of whether the content of the programme was general or specific for diabetes. The enrollment rate was best 2 months after the diagnosis of diabetes and the drop-out

Drivers and Facilitators of HIV-Related Stigma in Healthcare Settings in Ireland.

People living with HIV who experience stigma in healthcare settings are at increased risk for engaging in health avoidance behaviours, suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy, and viral non-suppression. HIV-related stigma erodes trust between patients and healthcare providers, thereby undermining both individual and public health. This study aimed to identify predictors of stigmatising attitudes, stigma practices, and fear of occupational transmission among healthcare workers in the Republic of Ireland. Data were collected from 295 healthcare workers using a standardised tool designed t

High awareness, moderate knowledge, and prevention-oriented practices regarding β-thalassemia among young adults in Palestine: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: β-Thalassemia is an inherited hemoglobin disorder caused by reduced or absent synthesis of the β-globin chain, leading to variable clinical severity and substantial lifelong health burden. Because prevention depends heavily on awareness, screening, and informed reproductive decision-making, understanding public knowledge, attitudes, and practices is essential for designing effective control strategies. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2025 and January 2026 using a structured, self-administered Arabic questionnaire distributed online throu

A cross sectional survey on breast self examination practice, utilization of breast professional examination, mammography and associated factors in Romagna, Italy.

In 1988, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in the Romagna region (Italy) to evaluate the association between knowledge of breast pathophysiology and preventive attitudes and screening tests practice for breast cancer. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to a sample of asymptomatic women aged 20-64 years living in the city of Faenza (Northern Italy). Of the 657 responders, 58% reported that they practiced breast self-examination; 55% had had a professional breast examination, and only 9% had had a mammogram as a screening test. Logistic regression analysis (including variab

[Psychometric characteristics of questionnaires designed to assess the knowledge, perceptions and practices of health care professionals with regards to alcoholic patients].

UNLABELLED: Failure of the French health care services to diagnose and manage problem drinkers has been established on many occasions. This results from a relative lack of knowledge of the basics of alcoholism and the low level of involvement of health care professionals in the management of these patients. In response to this inadequacy, the French Public Health Ministry promoted the development of managed care and coordination of care for these patients. Teams in charge of coordinating care for problem drinkers have been implanted in 96 French hospitals since 1996. These teams aim to provide

Promoting emergency contraception.

The use of available oral contraceptive agents for emergency contraception has been judged safe and effective by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration and other agencies. Yet implementation by physicians has been limited, and only a small percentage of women take advantage of this option each year. Lack of a specially packaged--and marketed--product for this indication has been a major barrier.
