A causative role for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in the pathogenesis of oral mucosal ulcerations has been suggested previously. We have adopted the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a rapid and sensitive means to detect H. pylori in swabs of recurrent oral aphthous ulcers and in samples of other oral sites. Of the oral aphthous ulcer samples, 32 (71.8%) were found to be positive, while the saliva and plaque samples (most of them taken from the patients with aphthous ulcers) were consistently negative for H. pylori DNA, as detected by the PCR assay. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach (excluding carcinoma of the cardia) has been established as a consequence of gastric infection with Helicobacter pylori (H.p.). Small animal models for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection have been widely examined and developed. Recently, the novel laboratory strain (the Sydney strain) of H. pylori, having a high ability to colonize the gastric mucosa of normal mice, was established. Helicobacter pylori-like organisms (HPLOs) were isolated from the gastric mucosa of two Sumatran tigers and identified by polymerase chain reaction analysis as Helicobacter acinonyx. At histological examination, both tigers revealed a chronic gastritis associated with HPLOs as demonstrated by immunolabelling and electron microscopy. This is the first isolation of H. acinonyx from tigers, in which, as previously reported in cheetahs, it may be a cause of gastritis.

This study attempted to optimize the growth conditions of Helicobacter pylori by comparing the growth of H. pylori in an anaerobic jar and an incubator. It was found that the primary isolation rate of H. pylori from gastric biopsies was higher in an anaerobic incubator (28/30) than in an anaerobic jar (21/30). In a series of 92 patients with gastric cancer who had biopsies of the antrum and fundus, we compared the 65 patients with Helicobacter pylori (71%) with the 27 negative patients. No difference was observed for age, gender or histology (intestinal or diffuse). 20 children with suspected Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection are presented. The mean age of the children was 9.4 years (range 4-13 years). The mean H. pylori IgG and IgA antibodies were 677 units and 760.7 units respectively. Antral biopsy cultures were positive in five children. Several factors including long-term eradication of the organism, cost, compliance, and adverse event profile should be considered for treating H. pylori infection in pediatric patients.
