STUDY OBJECTIVE: We present our experience with a novel technique for the reduction of acute hip dislocation in the emergency department (ED).
METHODS: We searched the medical records of all patients with a hip dislocation treated in our ED during a 4-year period. We recorded patient demographics, reduction technique, outcome and disposition, and whether the patient had a prosthetic hip. We reported characteristics of the entire study group and of the subset of patients for whom the Captain Morgan technique was used. Briefly, the technique involves placing the physician's knee behind the supi

Femoral head fracture malunions resulting in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome are rare complications after the occurrence of femoral head fractures. A 26-year-old female, with a motor vehicle accident history two years prior to our consultation, experienced multiple injuries, including a posterior right dislocation with a femoral head fracture. Although the fracture achieved a successful union with no evidence of osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis, the patient continued to experience hip pain and limited range of motion. We report on a case of femoral head fracture malunion that led to

A successful surgical exposure during total hip arthroplasty must not only provide adequate visualization of both the acetabulum and the proximal femur but also avoid injury to critical neurovascular structures and minimize dissection of soft-tissue hip stabilizers. Numerous surgical approaches to the hip have been described and subsequently modified since the advent of modern total hip arthroplasty. Descendent from the standard posterolateral approach, the mini-posterior approach not only satisfies the prerequisites for a successful total hip arthroplasty exposure but also exemplifies a utili

Overuse injuries affecting the hip, groin, and thigh represent a significant burden in both endurance and field sport athletes. This narrative review examines the anatomy, biomechanics, and imaging manifestations of the common overuse injuries in these regions, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and their clinical correlation. We systematize injuries within the Doha classification framework, discussing adductor-related pain, pubic-related pain, iliopsoas-related pain, and inguinal-related pain, along with thigh-based pathology including proximal hamstring ten

Almost all surgical procedures following injury can be provided in peripheral regional anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia - under consideration of specific contraindications. The majority of injuries at the lower limb are associated with severe pain and immobilization during the postoperative phase. Moreover, opioids are often required which are related to nausea, vomiting and impairment of vigilance. For avoidance of those side effects, regional anaesthesia techniques should be considered as a more effective approach with a better profile of side effects. Hip and proximal femur fractures are m

Proximal hamstring injuries occur during eccentric contraction with the hip and the knee on extension; hence they are relatively frequent lesions in specific sports such as water skiing and hurdle jumping. Additionally, the trend toward increasing activity and fitness training in the general population has resulted in similar injuries. Myotendinous strains are more frequent than avulsion injuries. Discrimination between the two types of lesions is relevant for patient management, since the former is treated conservatively and the latter surgically. MRI and Ultrasonography are both well suited

Stress injuries involving the epiphyseal-physeal-metaphyseal complex affecting the extremities of child and adolescent athletes were first described in the early 1950s. Initially observed in Little League baseball players, these injuries are now known to affect skeletally immature athletes in a variety of sports that involve high-impact repetitive overuse activities. Collectively known as primary periphyseal stress injuries, they may affect the long bones around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot of young athletes. These injuries respond well to timely treatment and r

CASE: A large surgical correction was required for severe hip dysplasia, which was associated with a delayed-onset sciatic nerve injury in an adolescent patient. A cortical bone spur on the outside of the acetabular fragment produced an indirect injury that became symptomatic during mobilization of the patient.
CONCLUSION: The risk of direct injury to the sciatic nerve during a periacetabular osteotomy is quite low when the osteotomy is executed in extension with abduction of the hip and flexion of the knee to reduce tension on the sciatic nerve. Reported injuries have been attributed to dire

A sixteen-year-old boy involved in a high-speed motor vehicle accident sustained an anterior hip dislocation and avulsion of the anterior ilium extending from the anterior superior iliac spine to the anterior inferior iliac spine. The hip was emergently reduced, and further imaging was obtained to evaluate the bony injury. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of a large displaced bony fragment representing avulsion of the anterior superior and inferior iliac spines and a smaller fragment from the reflected head of the rectus femoris. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixa

Hip pain in athletes involves a wide differential diagnosis. Adolescents and young adults are at particular risk for various apophyseal and epiphyseal injuries due to lack of ossification of these cartilaginous growth plates. Older athletes are more likely to present with tendinitis in these areas because their growth plates have closed. Several bursae in the hip area are prone to inflammation. The trochanteric bursa is the most commonly injured, and the lesion is easily identified by palpation of the area. Iliotibial band syndrome presents with similar lateral hip pain and may be identified b

AIMS: Injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is one of the known complications after periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) performed using the anterior approach, reported to occur in between 1.5% and 65% of cases. In this study, we performed a prospective study on the incidence of LFCN injury as well as its clinical outcomes based on the Harris Hip Score (HHS), Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36), and Japanese Orthopaedic Association Hip Disease Evaluation Questionnaire (JHEQ).
METHODS: The study included 42 consecutive hips in 42 patients (three male and 39 female) who underwent PAO f

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous traumatic dislocation of both the hips in an individual is an uncommon injury. It accounts for only 1-2% of all traumatic hip dislocations. Simultaneous traumatic dislocation of both the hips in opposite directions i.e., anterior dislocation of one hip and posterior of the other is even rarer. These asymmetric dislocations need prompt identification for appropriate management. While their management should proceed in a manner commensurate with the accepted management of isolated dislocations to avoid complications, it is the timely identification which is essential.

UNLABELLED: In this retrospective cohort study, men and women with eating disorders (n = 8867) had higher risk of injurious falls and hip fractures than age, sex, and county-matched controls (n = 88670).
INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders have been associated with decreased bone mineral density and increased fracture risk, but the association with fall injuries without fracture has not previously been investigated. Furthermore, fracture risk in men with eating disorders has been insufficiently studied.
METHODS: In the present study, 8867 patients (9.4% men) with a diagnosed eating disorders and

Hip fracture is the most common serious orthopaedic injury affecting older people. In Scotland, 7000 patients sustain a hip fracture each year, and this is projected to rise to 10,300 a year by 2029. In this narrative review, we describe the origin and evolution of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit, including key elements which have improved hip fracture care and outcomes within Scotland, and the current state of play of hip fracture registries around the world. We go on to discuss future directions for data driven improvements in hip fracture care, including international standardised data coll

CASE: A 54-year-old woman was brought to our emergency department with an inferomedial open hip dislocation without fracture secondary to a railway trauma. We performed hip reduction, wound debridement, and stabilization with external fixation. After 7 months, hip arthroplasty was performed for severe hip instability and avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
CONCLUSION: Open hip dislocation is an uncommon injury that is caused by high-energy trauma. It may be associated with serious management problems and complications, including infection and avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Ischiofemoral impingement syndrome (IFIS) is a rare condition that can cause significant hip pain, often linked to past injuries or surgeries. We present a case of a 33-year-old male who has persistent pain in both hips, radiating down his legs and experiencing a snapping sensation without any history of trauma or surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed swelling in the quadratus femoris muscle and reduced space between his ischium and femur, typical signs of IFIS. Instead of opting for surgery, the 33-year-old male managed with anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and a

Musculoskeletal injuries such as dislocation of the shoulder and hip joints and fractures of the femoral neck are known complications of seizures. Bilateral central subluxation of the hip joint with associated bilateral quadrilateral plate fracture is a rare entity and is prone to delayed diagnosis, even more so in patients who experience post-seizure disorientation. The authors report the case of a 74-year-old male patient with bilateral central subluxation of the hip joint with associated bilateral quadrilateral plate fracture due to seizure activity. Bilateral open reconstruction and fixati
