An image retrieval framework for real-time endoscopic image retargeting.

PURPOSE: Serial endoscopic examinations of a patient are important for early diagnosis of malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract. However, retargeting for optical biopsy is challenging due to extensive tissue variations between examinations, requiring the method to be tolerant to these changes whilst enabling real-time retargeting. METHOD: This work presents an image retrieval framework for inter-examination retargeting. We propose both a novel image descriptor tolerant of long-term tissue changes and a novel descriptor matching method in real time. The descriptor is based on histograms g

Nested Continual Learning with Elastic Weight Consolidation for Progressive Alzheimer's Disease Classification from MRI.

UNLABELLED: Introduction/ Objective: MRI-based Alzheimer's staging is often modeled as separate tasks, although clinical assessment progresses from screening to more refined staging. This study developed a continual-learning framework for retaining earlier diagnostic knowledge. METHODS: A nested multi-head framework was implemented for sequential learning of related binary classification tasks from structural MRI slices. Because verified subject identifiers were unavailable in the Mendeley dataset, the primary experiments were kept at the level of slice-based methodological analysis. Subject-

Automatic Segmentation of Placenta From MR Images Using a Novel BiGC U-Net.

Accurate segmentation of the placenta in Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is required for quantitative techniques such as texture and shape analysis, which have been proposed to improve placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) diagnostic rates. However, it is challenging due to the low contrast, image noise, blurred boundaries, and manual annotation variability. Hence, we proposed an enhanced U-Net architecture named BiGC U-Net, to automatically segment placental MR images. This deep learning (DL) structure incorporates a bidirectional gated convolutional module (BiGC) to capture complementary spatial de

Multiparameter concept-based interpretable model for early breast cancer diagnosis and structured reporting: a multi-center, multi-reader, radiologist-in-the-loop study.

BACKGROUND: Accurately differentiating early-stage breast cancer from benign lesions on MRI is essential to reduce unnecessary biopsies. However, the limited interpretability of current deep learning models hinders their clinical trustworthiness and adoption. This study aimed to develop a clinically interpretable concept bottleneck model (CBM) that integrates radiologist-specific knowledge and automatically generates structured reports, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and consistency in breast MRI interpretation. METHODS: Preoperative breast MR images and radiological reports were retros

Semi-supervised learning in prostate MRI tumor detection approaches fully supervised performance on external validation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of semi-supervised learning models for aggressive prostate cancer detection on MRI compared to fully supervised models trained with additional expert annotations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 1500 MRI scans from the PI-CAI challenge training subset. Positive scans had 220 human and 205 AI-generated annotations. The mtU-Net (proposed teacher-student semi-supervised approach) was compared to supervised (trained using only 220 human annotations) and semi-supervised (trained on human and AI-generated annotations) nnU-Net. The 205 AI-annotated sc

Siamese Capsule Network (SNNCap): Cognitive Analysis for Alzheimer's Disease Classification From MRI Data.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) detection is essential for timely treatment and better patient care. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technique in which radio waves and magnetic fields are used to capture high-resolution, multi-dimensional representations of brain structures. This high-resolution imaging capability makes MRI a key tool for diagnosing neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. However, the problem is to correctly classify the fresh MRI scans of patients. Researchers have proposed a deep learning-based method for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis using a Siamese Convolutional

CardioRadNet: Cardiac mass diagnosis through integrated segmentation and radiomic analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiac masses (CMs), though rare, include a wide spectrum of benign and malignant lesions that require distinct therapeutic strategies. Prior studies typically address narrow classification tasks (e.g., thrombus vs tumor) and rely on manually delineated regions. Building on these gaps, we introduce CardioRadNet: the first integrated framework combining deep learning segmentation and radiomics-based classification on contrast-free T1-weighted cardiac MR, designed to differentiate benign from malignant CMs. METHODS: A total of 127 patients with pathologically confirme

Incomplete Multi-View Data Learning via Adaptive Embedding and Partial l2,1 Norm Constraints for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by mental abnormalities and motor dysfunction. Its early classification and prediction of clinical scores have been major concerns for researchers. Currently, multi-view data learning has become an essential research area due to the capacity of multiple views to provide complementary insights from various perspectives. However, the discontinuous distribution, data missing complexity, small sample size, and redundant features in multi-view datasets pose a substantial obstacle, and most existing multi-view learnin

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Detection of Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities: Promise and Pitfalls.

The advent of anti-amyloid therapies (AATs) for Alzheimer disease (AD) has elevated the importance of MRI surveillance for amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) such as microhemorrhages and siderosis (ARIA-H) and edema (ARIA-E). We report a literature review and early quality-assurance experience with an FDA-cleared decision support artificial intelligence (AI) tool intended for detection of ARIA in MRI clinical workflows. The AI system improved the sensitivity for detection of subtle ARIA-E and ARIA-H lesions but at the cost of a reduction in specificity. We propose a tiered workflow c

FA-UNet: A FasterNet and Attention-Gated Hybrid Network for Precise Ischemic Stroke Segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely segmentation of ischemic stroke lesions from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is crucial for diagnosis and treatment planning. Manual segmentation is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. This study aims to develop and validate a novel deep learning framework that overcomes the common trade-off between high segmentation accuracy and the computational efficiency required for practical clinical use. METHODS: We developed FasterNet and Attention-Gated UNet (FA-UNet), a hybrid U-Net-based architecture. The model's design features

Multi-Organ Segmentation From Partially Labeled and Unaligned Multi-Modal MRI in Thyroid-Associated Orbitopathy.

Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is a prevalent inflammatory autoimmune disorder, leading to orbital disfigurement and visual disability. Automatic comprehensive segmentation tailored for quantitative multi-modal MRI assessment of TAO holds enormous promise but is still lacking. In this paper, we propose a novel method, named cross-modal attentive self-training (CMAST), for the multi-organ segmentation in TAO using partially labeled and unaligned multi-modal MRI data. Our method first introduces a dedicatedly designed cross-modal pseudo label self-training scheme, which leverages self-trai

Contrastive learning and prior knowledge-induced feature extraction network for prediction of high-risk recurrence areas in Gliomas.

Gliomas can easily recur even after standard treatments, and their recurrence may be related to insufficient radiation doses received by high-risk recurrence areas (HRA). Therefore, HRA prediction can help clinical experts in formulating effective radiotherapy plans. However, research on HRA prediction using early postoperative conventional MRI images with total resection is lacking. This gap is due to multifold challenges, including visually minimal differences between HRA and non-HRA and small dataset size caused by missing follow-up data. A contrastive learning and prior knowledge-induced f

Decision Strategies in AI-Based Ensemble Models in Opportunistic Alzheimer's Detection from Structural MRI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition and the most common form of dementia. Recent developments in AD treatment call for robust diagnostic tools to facilitate medical decision-making. Despite progress for early diagnostic tests, there remains uncertainty about clinical use. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as a readily available imaging tool in the current AD diagnostic pathway, in combination with artificial intelligence, offers opportunities of added value beyond symptomatic evaluation. However, MRI studies in AD tend to suffer from small datasets and conseque

PARADISE: Personalized and regional adaptation for HIE disease identification and segmentation.

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a brain dysfunction occurring in approximately 1-5/1000 term-born neonates. Accurate segmentation of HIE lesions in brain MRI is crucial for prognosis and diagnosis but presents a unique challenge due to the diffuse and small nature of these abnormalities, which resulted in a substantial gap between the performance of machine learning-based segmentation methods and clinical expert annotations for HIE. To address this challenge, we introduce ParadiseNet, an algorithm specifically designed for HIE lesion segmentation. ParadiseNet incorporates global-local

CineMyoPS: Segmenting Myocardial Pathologies From Cine Cardiac MR.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and T2-weighted cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging can respectively identify scarring and edema areas, both of which are essential for MI risk stratification and prognosis assessment. Although combining complementary information from multi-sequence CMR is useful, acquiring these sequences can be time-consuming and prohibitive, e.g., due to the administration of contrast agents. Cine CMR is a rapid and contrast-free imaging technique that can visualize both motion and structural abnormaliti

Assessment of "Zero-Shot" General Purpose Segmentation Models: An Analysis of the Meta "Segment Anything Model" on Meningioma MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Newly developed zero-shot segmentation algorithms, like "Segment Anything Model 2" (SAM2) of Meta, have the potential to automate segmentation processes more efficiently than existing solutions. The goal of this study was to assess the ability of SAM2 to segment meningioma MRIs and suggest paradigms to enhance and assess performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used SAM2 to produce segmentation masks using T1-weighted MRIs within the 2023 BraTS Preoperative Meningioma Data Set. We also proposed interactive click-based and contour-based augmentation strategies to simulate

PULASki: Learning inter-rater variability using statistical distances to improve probabilistic segmentation.

In the domain of medical imaging, many supervised learning based methods for segmentation face several challenges such as high variability in annotations from multiple experts, paucity of labelled data and class imbalanced datasets. These issues may result in segmentations that lack the requisite precision for clinical analysis and can be misleadingly overconfident without associated uncertainty quantification. This work proposes the PULASki method as a computationally efficient generative tool for biomedical image segmentation that accurately captures variability in expert annotations, even i

Adaptive fusion of dual-view for grading prostate cancer.

Accurate preoperative grading of prostate cancer is crucial for assisted diagnosis. Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a commonly used non-invasive approach, however, the interpretation of MRI images is still subject to significant subjectivity due to variations in physicians' expertise and experience. To achieve accurate, non-invasive, and efficient grading of prostate cancer, this paper proposes a deep learning method that adaptively fuses dual-view MRI images. Specifically, a dual-view adaptive fusion model is designed. The model employs encoders to extract embedded featur

A calibrated SVM based on weighted smooth GL1/2 for Alzheimer's disease prediction.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is currently one of the mainstream senile diseases in the world. It is a key problem predicting the early stage of AD. Low accuracy recognition of AD and high redundancy brain lesions are the main obstacles. Traditionally, Group Lasso method can achieve good sparseness. But, redundancy inside group is ignored. This paper proposes an improved smooth classification framework which combines the weighted smooth GL1/2 (wSGL1/2) as feature selection method and a calibrated support vector machine (cSVM) as the classifier. wSGL1/2 can make intra-group and inner-group features

Prospective classification of Alzheimer's disease conversion from mild cognitive impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is emerging as a serious problem with the rapid aging of the population, but due to the unclear cause of the disease and the absence of therapy, appropriate preventive measures are the next best thing. For this reason, it is important to early detect whether the disease converts from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) which is a prodromal phase of AD. With the advance in brain imaging techniques, various machine learning algorithms have become able to predict the conversion from MCI to AD by learning brain atrophy patterns. However, at the time of diagnosis, it is difficu
