Military influences on the evolution of clinical trials throughout history.

Clinical trials of drugs, procedures, and other therapies play a crucial role in advancing medical science by evaluating the safety, efficacy, and optimal use of medical interventions. The design and implementation of these trials have evolved significantly over time, reflecting advancements in medicine, ethics, and methodology. Early historical examples, such as King Nebuchadnezzar II's and his captives' dietary experiment and Ambroise Paré's treatment of gunshot wounds, laid some foundational principles of trial design. The momentum of clinical trial development increased notably with James

Foundations in physiology: an introductory course using the core concepts.

As one element of an extensive revision to program curriculum, the Integrative Physiology and Health Science Department at a small, private, liberal arts institution developed a novel introductory course for the major, focusing specifically on the "core concepts" of physiology. Intended to provide the initial step in explicit scaffolding for student success and, ultimately, transfer of knowledge across the curriculum, development and assessment of the first offering of the course were completed. In the fall of 2021, IPH 131: Foundations in Physiology was launched. The specific core concepts co

Morbigenous brain region and gene detection with a genetically evolved random neural network cluster approach in late mild cognitive impairment.

MOTIVATION: The multimodal data fusion analysis becomes another important field for brain disease detection and increasing researches concentrate on using neural network algorithms to solve a range of problems. However, most current neural network optimizing strategies focus on internal nodes or hidden layer numbers, while ignoring the advantages of external optimization. Additionally, in the multimodal data fusion analysis of brain science, the problems of small sample size and high-dimensional data are often encountered due to the difficulty of data collection and the specialization of brain

Attempting the Impossible: Keeping a Jail COVID-Free.

AbstractPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States housed 2.3 million inmates in 7,147 incarceration structures that, because of age, overcrowding, and poor ventilation, exacerbated the spread of airborne infections. The flow of individuals into and out of correctional facilities compounded the challenges in keeping them COVID-free. This article focuses on the work of the health and administrative leadership, in partnership with judicial and police personnel, to prevent COVID-19 inside the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and to mitigate its spread when the jail population and/or
