BACKGROUND: Dengue is a severe environmental public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions. In Singapore, decreasing seroprevalence and herd immunity due to successful vector control has paradoxically led to increased transmission potential of the dengue virus. We have previously demonstrated that incompatible insect technique coupled with sterile insect technique (IIT-SIT), which involves the release of X-ray-irradiated male Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, reduced the Aedes aegypti population by 98% and dengue incidence by 88%. This novel vector control tool is expected to be abl

The tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (F.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a significant economic pest in Hawaii's macadamia orchards, contributing to substantial pre- and postharvest losses. Existing management strategies relying on cultural controls and generalist predators have been proven inefficient. This study developed and evaluated a trap-based monitoring system integrating both olfactory and visual cues to improve pest monitoring and management for H. obscurus. Field trials conducted over 2 yr assessed various alcohol-based lure formulations and trap color preferen

Municipalities on the lower Colorado River are seasonally overwhelmed by swarms of the net-spinning caddisfly, Smicridea fasciatella McLachlan. Nuisance caddisflies pose several public health concerns, including asthma, dermatitis, and mental anguish, and the presence of large swarms can negatively impact waterfront recreation and tourism. Here, survey responses from 123 riverfront homes in Bullhead City, Arizona, were used to assess the nuisance status of S. fasciatella and the perceived effectiveness of area-wide abatement strategies. In 2021, 68% of surveys indicated that nuisance caddisfly

Spotted lanternfly (SLF; Lycorma delicatula [White]) overwinters in egg masses for approximately eight months a year, representing its longest individual life stage. Therefore, this life stage constitutes a good candidate for management practices. Egg masses were collected from various locations in Winchester, VA, and stored in climate-controlled incubators (10 °C, 65% relative humidity, and a 16:8 light-to-dark ratio). The egg masses were treated during one of three periods during the overwintering phase: winter, early spring, or late spring. Bioassays were conducted across 3 years (2021 to 2

Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky), a wood borer (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) native to China, has been unintentionally and repeatedly introduced to North American and European landscapes as a stow-away in the wood packing material commonly used in international trade. Asian longhorned beetle causes extensive damage and mortality in multiple deciduous tree species and in response, countries in both North America and Europe have adopted policies of eradication. Models that integrate patterns of Asian longhorned beetle dispersal with records of infested trees are critic

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses, including dengue, Zika and chikungunya, representing a major global public health concern. Owing to the lack of effective vaccines and specific therapeutic options for these infections, vector control remains the main strategy to limit their spread. Traditionally, vector control has relied on extensive use of insecticides combined with the elimination of breeding sites. However, in addition to selecting for insecticide-resistant mosquitoes, concerns have arisen about behavioural effects induced by insecticides, particularly repell

BACKGROUND: A significant portion of malaria transmission occurs outdoors, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Current capacity to control such outdoor biting and resting mosquitoes is inadequate, and an expanded range of tools to deploy in outdoor situations is required. This paper explores the range of options available, their current status and potential for effective implementation.
METHODS: A literature review of the status of classes of interventions to reduce outdoor biting was conducted, including: attractive targeted sugar baits, endectocides, outdoor residual spraying, fogging, m

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an invasive species that causes serious damage to soft-skinned fruits. The use of plant-based biorational insecticides (plant extracts and essential oils) to control this pest has grown extensively. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the current status, trends, and perspectives of these studies, with a focus on the plant families and major compounds used as insecticides to control D. suzukii. The first article in this research field was published in 2015, and there has been exponential growth in subsequent ye

Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae), is one of the most invasive weeds of natural and agricultural areas of Florida, Hawaii, and Texas (USA). Herbicides are the main tool used to manage populations of this weed. Faunal inventories of the insects associated with invasive populations of the weed have mostly listed leaf-feeding phytophagous, pollinator, or predacious species. Among these, bark and ambrosia beetles were collected only once from S. terebinthifolia in the invaded range and there are no reports from the native range. A diverse assemblage of bark and am

The strong dependency of some vectors on their host as a source of habitat can be viewed as a weak link in pathogen's transmission cycles using the vertebrate host as a 'Trojan horse' to deliver insecticides directly to the vector-host point of contact (hereafter 'systemic control'). This could, simultaneously, affect the survival of blood-feeding females and coprophagic larvae. Sand-flies, vectors of leishmaniasis worldwide, are often dependent on their bloodmeal host as a source of habitat and may therefore be good candidates for systemic control. In the present study, we field-tested this m

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) utilizes a multi-component aggregation pheromone to mediate mass-attacks and thereby colonize otherwise unsusceptible trees. Females produce the attractant frontalin and a synergist, trans-verbenol. We investigated trans-verbenol to determine whether enantiomeric composition, airborne concentration, and possibly other factors might affect its biological activity. Newly-emerged females from Mississippi populations produced 54-87% of the (-)-enantiomer; females initiating galleries in logs produce

BACKGROUND: The Dubas bug, Ommatissus lybicus, is a serious insect pest for the date palm Phoenix dactylifera in Oman and other date palm growing countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Climate is a key factor affecting the insect population dynamics, including O. lybicus. There are limited studies of O. lybicus relating to microclimate. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of the various humid thermal indices (HTIs) and daily accumulation of temperature and humidity to model the relationship with O. lybicus.
RESULTS: The highly infested locations showed a st

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and urban yellow fever viruses. Indoor, ultra low volume (ULV) space spraying with pyrethroid insecticides is the main approach used for Ae. aegypti emergency control in many countries. Given the widespread use of this method, the lack of large-scale experiments or detailed evaluations of municipal spray programs is problematic.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Two experimental evaluations of non-residual, indoor ULV pyrethroid spraying were conducted in Iquitos, Peru. In each, a central sprayed sector was surrounded b

Monoterpenes are the main components of essential oils. Some members of this chemical family present insecticidal activity. Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas disease in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Perú. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of six monoterpenes (1,8-cineole, eugenol, linalool, menthol, α-terpineol, and thymol) on the locomotor and flushing out activity of T. infestans. A video tracking technique was used to evaluate the locomotor activity of nymphs exposed to different concentrations of these chemicals applied as films on filter paper.

Malaria is a vector-borne and life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The vector control insecticide market represents a small fraction of the crop protection market and is estimated to be valued at up to $500 million at the active ingredient level. Insecticide resistance towards the current WHOPES-approved products urgently requires the development of new tools to protect communities against the transmission of malaria. The evaluation of commercial products for malaria vector control is a viable and

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is an endemic pest in Israel and there can be low levels of infestation of dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.). Because C. capitata is considered a quarantine pest by several major importing countries, the export of fresh dates requires the elimination of this pest. For mandarin, cold storage at 1.11°C for 15 d is considered to be an effective treatment for the elimination of C. capitata. In this study, we compared the cold tolerance of C. capitata in "Barhi" dates to that of C. capitata in mandarins (Citrus unshiu Marcovitch, "Satsuma").

The sleeping sickness focus of Campo lies along the Atlantic coast and extends along the Ntem River, which constitutes the Cameroonian and Equatorial Guinean border. It is a hypo-endemic focus with the disease prevalence varying from 0.3 to 0.86% during the last few decades. Investigations on animal reservoirs revealed a prevalence of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense of 0.6% in wild animals and 4.83% in domestic animals of this focus. From 2001 to 2012, about 19 931 tsetse were collected in this focus and five tsetse species including Glossina palpalis palpalis, G. pallicera, G. nigrofusca, G. tab

Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) interventions can reduce malaria transmission by targeting mosquitoes when they feed upon sleeping humans and/or rest inside houses, livestock shelters or other man-made structures. However, many malaria vector species can maintain robust transmission, despite high coverage of LLINs/IRS containing insecticides to which they are physiologically fully susceptible, because they exhibit one or more behaviours that define the biological limits of achievable impact with these interventions: (1) Natural or insecticide-induced a
