BACKGROUND: Parents of infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are often unintentionally marginalized in pursuit of optimal clinical care. Family Integrated Care (FICare) was developed to support families as part of their infants' care team in level III NICUs. We adapted the model for level II NICUs in Alberta, Canada, and evaluated whether the new Alberta FICare™ model decreased hospital length of stay (LOS) in preterm infants without concomitant increases in readmissions and emergency department visits.

BACKGROUND & PROBLEMS: During the stay of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, their important tubes must be fixed to the skin with medical adhesive products to ensure they remain securely emplaced. However, premature infants have immature skin development and are particularly prone to medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI), with related incidence rates reaching as high as 47.4% in our unit.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to improve nurses' handling of medical adhesive products and the accuracy of their knowledge regarding MARSI in premature infants with th

Critically ill neonates in Intensive Care Units require complex pharmacological and nutritional therapies often administered through small-calibre, single-lumen vascular accesses. This practice, known as multi-infusion, involves the simultaneous administration of multiple solutions, presenting significant challenges in terms of fluid dynamic management and clinical safety. This study analyses the performance of common infusion line configurations, focusing on transit times and the concentration profiles of solutions delivered to the patient. A software tool was implemented to simulate and pred

BACKGROUND: Becoming a parent is a significant life event; however, premature birth abruptly alters this transition, creating short- and long-term consequences for both parents and infants.
AIM: This study sought to explore the lived experiences of South African parents throughout the trajectory of premature birth and the subsequent hospitalisation of their baby in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
SETTING: The research was conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa, within the private healthcare setting.
METHODS: A quantitative, exploratory and descriptive phenomenological study design

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in resource-limited settings face major infection-control challenges due to patient vulnerability, high device use, and limited staffing. Serratia marcescens is a well-recognized cause of recurrent NICU outbreaks, however structured quality-improvement (QI) frameworks for outbreak management in low-resource settings remain insufficiently described.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether implementation of a structured, multimodal, Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA)-based QI framework was associated with improved outbreak containment and infection-control process

BACKGROUND: Vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery (VAVD) is a common obstetric intervention used to facilitate childbirth. In Lebanon, the practice remains inconsistently applied. Standardized national guidelines and their impact on neonatal outcomes, particularly neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions, remain insufficiently explored.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between VAVD and NICU admission in a tertiary hospital in Lebanon.
METHODS: A retrospective hospital-based case-control study was conducted between January 2021 and December 2023. Cases were defined as neonates admitted

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colostrum, given to newborns early in extrauterine life, provides essential nutrition, immunity, and growth support, offering a strong start for healthy development. This study aims to reduce barriers to colostrum administration and increase colostrum administration for all newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within the first 6 hours of life, using the Apollo Root Cause Analysis (ARCA) method.
METHODS: A pre-post quality improvement study was done prospectively in the NICU of a maternity hospital from July 15, 2022 to July 15, 2023. The study group consiste

BACKGROUND: Infants living with an enterostomy were commonly reported as underweight. However, the nutritional status of enterostomy infants after stoma formation has not been given due attention, and there is limited evidence to demonstrate infant growth failure before stoma closure.
AIM: To identify the prevalence, risk factors and the effect on clinical outcome of malnutrition in infants undergoing enterostomy in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
STUDY DESIGN: The design was a retrospective cohort study. We retrospectively analysed surgical infants with gastrointestinal disease fro

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is a known cause of nosocomial outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). In early 2021, an outbreak occurred in our NICUs, prompting the implementation of rigorous infection control measures. This study aimed to assess whether the outbreak strain was eliminated or persisted with sporadic transmission.
METHODS: Ongoing surveillance for S. marcescens infections was conducted in the NICUs and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) through June 2023. Nosocomial cases were defined as infections diagnosed more than three days after hospitalization. Whole-geno

INTRODUCTION: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) are among the most common and preventable hospital-acquired infections in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units (PICU-NICU). CLABSI is a common etiology of late-onset sepsis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to describe the incidence of CLABSI in PICUs and NICUs in our geographical setting.
METHODS: Descriptive study conducted as part of the VINCat program, investigating the incidence of CLABSI in NICUs and PICUs at acute care hospitals in Catalonia from 2013 to 2022. The a

BACKGROUND: The birth of a child is typically associated with joy and relief; however, when a newborn is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), parental stress often persists or intensifies. The duration of a newborn's stay in the NICU can have a significant effect on parental well-being.
AIM: This study explored the experiences of stress among mothers with hospitalised newborns in NICUs within the Accra Metropolis.
STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 purposively selected parents in NICUs. T

BACKGROUND: The normal development of sleep-wake cycles is crucial for the long-term neurological health of preterm infants, yet sleep protection practices remain suboptimal. Given China's large population of preterm infants and its distinct cultural background and healthcare policies compared to Western countries, NICU nurses in China may face unique challenges. However, our understanding of the barriers and facilitators encountered by nurses in implementing sleep protection for preterm infants is limited.
METHODS: From November 2023 to February 2024, we conducted semi-structured interviews

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal cholestatic jaundice (cholestasis) has extensive aetiologies and occurs frequently in preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Current multinational guidelines involve wide-ranging investigations suited to general newborn populations without validation in NICU settings. We retrospectively reviewed New Zealand's guidelines for investigating cholestatic jaundice in the NICU.
METHODS: Infants admitted to one tertiary NICU between 2008 and 2022 with direct bilirubin ≥20 µmol/L and percentage of total bilirubin ≥20% were identified from laboratory records. Inve

BACKGROUND: Multi/extensively drug-resistant bacterial infections have recently increased and new antimicrobial options are needed for difficult-to-treat infections. Ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) has been approved for patients 3 months to 18 years of age, but real-life data on its off-label use in neonates and young infants are still scarce.
MATERIALS: We report demographic, clinical and microbiologic data as well as outcome and safety of all cases of infants treated with CZA between January 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022 in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit. We also review all neonatal c

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rapid genome-wide sequencing (rGWS) continues to transform the care provided to infants with genetic conditions in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Previous research has demonstrated that rGWS has immense benefits on patient care; however, little is known about non-genetic healthcare providers' (HCPs) experiences and perspectives of working with rGWS and supporting families through the rGWS testing process in Canadian NICU facilities. To address this gap, we surveyed and conducted semi-structured interviews with non-genetic HCPs of diverse professions from NICUs in
