AIMS: Iron deficiency is common in pulmonary hypertension, but its clinical significance and optimal definition remain unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Phenotypic data for 1028 patients enrolled in the Redefining Pulmonary Hypertension through Pulmonary Vascular Disease Phenomics study were analyzed. Iron deficiency was defined using the conventional heart failure definition and also based upon optimal cut-points associated with impaired peak oxygen consumption (peakVO2), 6-min walk test distance, and 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) scores. The relationships between iron deficiency and cardiac

There are many presentations of iron-deficiency anemia associated with pica in adults, but there is a lack of literature summarizing its different presentations. In this scoping review, we sought to identify the various presentations and if treatment of iron-deficiency anemia resolved the presenting symptoms of pica. This review was conducted by completing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-Scr) checklist. The following electronic databases were searched for potentially eligible articles: PubMed, ProQuest, and Bielefeld A

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. IDA is commonly associated with thrombocytosis and normal or slightly decreased leukocyte count. Sometimes it can present with thrombocytopenia, but rarely present with pancytopenia. Here we are presenting six cases of severe iron deficiency presenting with pancytopenia, which responded to iron replenishment.
METHODS: This 12-month observational study was conducted in the Department of General Medicine at a tertiary care Centre in India. All cases of pancytopenia (after exclusion of other causes) with IDA

Systemic iron deficiency (SID), even in the absence of anaemia, worsens the prognosis and increases mortality in heart failure (HF). Recent clinical-epidemiological studies, however, have shown that a myocardial iron deficiency (MID) is frequently present in cases of severe HF, even in the absence of SID and without anaemia. In addition, experimental studies have shown a poor correlation between the state of systemic and myocardial iron. MID in animal models leads to severe mitochondrial dysfunction, alterations of mitophagy, and mitochondrial biogenesis, with profound alterations in cardiac m

Severe anaemia and invasive bacterial infections remain important causes of hospitalization and death among young African children. The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance demand better understanding of bacteraemia risk factors to inform prevention strategies. Epidemiological studies have reported an association between severe anaemia and bacteraemia. In this review, we explore evidence that severe anaemia is associated with increased risk of invasive bacterial infections in young children. We describe mechanisms of iron dysregulation in severe anaemia that might contribute to inc

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most frequent hematological disorder in children, with an incidence in industrialized countries of 20.1% between 0 and 4 years of age and 5.9% between 5 and 14 years (39 and 48.1% in developing countries). Although IDA has been recognized for a long time, there are still uncovered issues and room for improving the management of this condition. New frontiers regarding its diagnosis and therapeutic options emerge every day; recently, innovative formulations of iron have been launched, both for oral and parenteral administration, with the aim of offering treatm

Iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, is commonly found worldwide and affects the health and wellbeing of pregnant and nonpregnant w … imens. Indeed, IV iron has been shown to provide adequate iron replacement in women with functional iron deficiencies as well as those with ID resulting from inflammatory disorders- patients often resistant to oral iron therapy. More recent IV iron regimens have been shown to provide iron replacement in a safe and effective manner, being associated with more saluta …

Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent form of anemia worldwide. In the United States, clinicians routinely screen for iron deficiency anemia upon initiation of prenatal care, at the start of the third trimester, and prior to birth. Treatment of iron deficiency anemia generally begins with oral supplementation of elemental iron, which is associated with adverse gastrointestinal effects. These adverse effects can decrease adherence, leading to subtherapeutic treatment. Newer evidence highlights the benefits of early screening for iron deficiency before the onset of anemia, as well as the

Background and Objectives: Iron is an essential micronutrient for many biological functions and has been found to be intimately linked to cancer biology. Although the effects of increased dietary iron consumption in the development of CRC have been previously investigated in several cohort studies, the available evidence on the involvement of iron deficiency in this process is relatively scarce. Previously published papers did not analyze specific outcomes, such as the presence of biologically aggressive histopathological characteristics, that are associated with the subtypes of iron deficienc

BACKGROUND: Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF) is a common disorder affecting a large population. Iron deficiency (ID) with and without anaemia is an important variable which is often underreported and under treated in clinical practice, which contributes to patient symptoms. The present study was undertaken to study the prevalence and Spectrum of Iron Deficiency in patients of HFrEF.
METHODS: This is a single-centre observational study. All patients with a clinical diagnosis of HFrEF presenting to the hospital were studied. Ejection Fraction (EF) was assessed on Echo and ID

AIM: To determine the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and treatment response of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) with normal platelet count. Study further aimed to determine changing of platelet parameters treatment response of IDA.
METHODS: IDA patients (n = 124) and the control group (CG) (n = 124) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were compared for MPV and platelet parameters. Patients with IDA were divided into two groups as partial and complete response. The partial response to treatment group (PRG) was accepted as haemoglobin level between 10 and 12 g/dL, mean corpuscula

Iron participates as an essential cofactor in the biosynthesis of critical cellular components, including DNA, proteins and lipids. The ergosterol biosynthetic pathway, which is an important target of antifungal treatments, depends on iron in four enzymatic steps. Our results in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae show that the expression of ergosterol biosynthesis (ERG) genes is tightly modulated by iron availability probably through the iron-dependent variation of sterol and heme levels. Whereas the transcription factors Upc2 and Ecm22 are responsible for the activation of ERG genes upo

Treatments for improving iron deficiency anemia are generally aimed at increasing oral iron intake and/or administration. Such treatments, however, have been unsuccessful in managing nutritional disorders, including anemia, in patients with masticatory dysfunction caused by impaired occlusion. Nevertheless, few studies have assessed the potential benefits of providing optimal occlusion in such cases. Here, we report a case involving a 53-year-old woman with iron deficiency anemia, wherein we attempted to facilitate efficient mastication by establishing functional occlusion with dental implant

BACKGROUND: Iron is essential for the growth and development of trace elements in plants, and iron deficiency can lead to leaf chlorosis. Ammonium and nitrate are the major forms of nitrogen present in soils. Ammonium nitrate alleviates the chlorosis of leaves caused by iron deficiency, but the mechanism is not clear in pear.
RESULTS: Ammonium nitrate induced the increase of nitric oxide (NO) under iron deficiency. We further analyzed the effect of NO by exogenous NO treatment. The results showed that ammonium nitrate and NO increased the activity of ferric chelate reductase. NO induced the e

Iron deficiency (ID) in utero and in infancy can cause irreversible neurocognitive damage. Iron status is not routinely tested at birth, so the burden of neonatal ID in the United States is unknown. Infants born from twin or higher-order pregnancies may be at elevated risk of inadequate nutrient endowment at birth. The present study sought to compare the burden of neonatal ID in cord blood serum samples from twin (n = 54) and singleton pregnancies (n = 24). Iron status (serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), hepcidin) and inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleuki

Iron deficiency (ID) is globally prevalent, and apart from anemia is associated with thrombocytosis. While considered benign, studies linking thrombotic events with prior ID anemia suggest otherwise. Herein we used animal models to assess the influence of ID on thrombotic tendency. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed control or iron deficient diets and ferric carboxymaltose was used to reverse ID. Thrombosis was induced via stenosis of the inferior vena cava or damage to the right carotid artery using ferric chloride. Thrombi were evaluated histologically and via high frequency ultrasound in the veno

Iron deficiency, the commonest cause of anaemia in children, is a global public health problem. Worldwide, almost 50% of children <5 years of age are anaemic. Platelet count in iron deficiency anaemia is mostly normal or high; thrombocytopenia is rare. We describe two children with iron deficiency anaemia and severe thrombocytopenia who recovered with iron supplementation alone.

AIMS: Iron deficiency (ID) is a frequent finding in patients with chronic and acute heart failure (AHF) along the full spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Iron deficiency has been related to ventricular systolic dysfunction, but its role in right ventricular function has not been evaluated. We sought to evaluate whether ID identifies patients with greater right ventricular dysfunction in the setting of AHF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively included 903 patients admitted with AHF. Right systolic function was evaluated by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE
